Talk about unlucky sevens. An hour ago, seventeen-year-old, seven months pregnant Novalee Nation was heading for California with her boyfriend. Now she finds herself stranded at a Wal-Mart in Sequoyah, Oklahoma, with just $7.77 in change. But Novalee is about to discover hidden treasures in this small Southwest town--a group of down-to-earth, deeply caring people willing to help a homeless, jobless girl living secretly in a Wal-Mart. From Bible-thumping blue-haired Sister Thelma Husband to eccentric librarian Forney Hull who loves Novalee more than she loves herself, they are about to take her--and you, too--on a moving, funny, and unforgettable journey to . . . Where the Heart Is.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful and Heartwarming I picked up this book because I absolutely love the movie. The book was everything and more than I was hoping for! It is beautifully written and continues to hold your interest from start to finish. The Characters are very well developed and you feel as though you are on a journey with them.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A really great read I was really moved by how this young 17 year old girl turned out to be this remarkable woman who forgave the man that left her stranded at Walmart, alone, and pregnant..

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Really great! What a great book! I couldn't put it down. There are so many insane things that happen to this girl in the book that it keeps you reading, waiting to see what good or bad will happen next. Billie Letts certainly knows how to write good characters. You can't help but feel what they're feeling.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Touching Story I read this years ago and it still is one I can read over and over again. A great story that anyone can enjoy. The book is far better than the movie (as usually they are:)

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Horrid writing! Seriously. Are all these other reviewers utterly insane to suggest that this is a "great" book? It is clear that this book will NEVER be considered for a Literature class. The characters in this book are not only ridiculously (and ethnocentrically) named, but are not at all interesting. I think that Ms. Winfrey provided too much hype for this average below-average piece of writing. I, like other readers that I know, purposely steered clear of Oprah picks during this time of horrible book choice decisions.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My favourite book When I started reading this book I immediately fell in love with the character of Novalee Nation a girl who wasn't even eighteen, pregnant, ditched by her boyfriend and has a fear of sevens. All the characters in this book are great my favourites other than Novalee would be Sister Husband, Lexie and Forney Hull. Anyone that hasn't read this book should read it because it can make you laugh or cry and it really drags you into Seoquoyah Oklahoma.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A sweet, and exciting story--Where the Heart is ‘Where the Heart Is’ is a terrific novel about seventeen-year old girl named Novalee Nation. Novalee is dumped at a Wal-mart seven months pregnant by her boyfriend Willy Jack. During the time of her pregnancy, she meets several warm characters who support her and grow to love her. It’s filled with whimsy individuals and an appealing plot that is great for any age. The writer Billie Letts put in a charm that will draw you into the core. I strongly recommend this book because it is simply good reading material

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Where the Heart Is This is a story of a pregnant seventeen year old girl, who’s boyfriend has just stranded her in at Wal-Mart in a small town in Oklahoma, miles from where she comes from. Her first day on her own, Novalee wanders around this town, and meets new and interesting people who’s words shape her experiences for years to come. Once night has fallen, with no money and no where to go, she makes Wal-Mart her new home. The first person she meets is Sister Husband, who at first mistakens Novalee as someone else, however she still gives her a Welcome Wagon basket and invites her to her home. Next is Moses Whitecotton, who gives her a baby album and some advice to give her baby a strong name, a name that will help him or her through good times and bad. Then she meets a mysterious man, Fourney Hull, the town librarian who hides all of his secrets, and eventually falls in love with Novalee. Finally, she meets a twelve-year old boy, Benny Goodluck, who knows Novalee is going through a tough tim

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Book To Remember Forever! This book was an incredible story of a young woman trying to get through life with no one, and nothing . . . that is until she has her baby, Americus, this changes everything. This novel is beautifully written by a wonderful "new-to-the-scene" author. This novel shows how wonderful things can be, even for someone unlucky. A great book . . . I recommend it to anyone; especially teens. A book that truly shows . . . Where The Heart Is.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from AWESOME! This was the best book I have ever read. Even though I saw the movie first I still thought the book was a bit better. It was nice to see the movie because it gave me an idea of how the characters looked and how they reacted. I think that Natalie Portman and Ashley Judd portrayed the characters excellently. The book varied in story lines in other areas and even though the movie deeply touched me the book did even more so. After reading it I felt more family orientated and was happy with what I had. It made me consider my lifestyle and what kinds of things are more important then others. Overall this was an excellent book that I would recommend to anyone!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Where the heart should be This book reminded me of the little things that matter. Life is not just about who has the most money or the best car. It's not about who has the most friends or the most influential job. Life is about all the litte things that we do for each other. When Novalee was alone in a hospital with a new baby and her mother had run off with her money, Novalee was accepted into the home and the life of a virtual stranger.... Sister Husband. Novalee found love and security, friendship and family. and all of this was shown to her because someone was willing to help out a girl in need. If only we could all remember to help someone in need whenever we have the opportunity than this world would become a better place to live.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from What a Journey "Where the Heart is " is a feel good book. The characters make you feel right at home. They invite you into their lives. As wacky as they can be the reader can readily identify themselves with each character's strenghs and weaknesses. It is a book that you can read over and over again hoping for a continuation.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Choice This was a book that I just stumbled across in Chapters. It is a very down to earth book and a very interesting book to read. It sure is a page turner. I found it very hard to set the book down. I strongly recomed it to anyone who enjoys reading from the heart.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Where the Heart Is Being a mother of four, my heart was breaking to think that a young teenager could end up in a circumstance such as this one. Having my first child was the most remarkable experience of my life time and I think that this book will remind all of us that life is to be shared with those who love us. We need to help our teen's who cannot help themselves. Some life experiences are unavoidable and disaster can strike. Noralee certainly demonstrates the strength of women today. I liked this book very much.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from God Working Through Us This book, "Where the Heart Is," is all about the difficulties life has to offer, but also the rewards. The author Billie Letts probably wrote this book to show us that life has its ups and downs. Also that everything doesn't always work out the way we want it to. He decided to prove this by writing a book in the eyes of a young, single mother, who has no family to look to. Sister Thelma Husband to me is God, who takes us in when we are lonely and afraid. He helps us and protects us, just like she did to Novalie and Americus. This book is a great example of how God works through people to help other people. It is an awesome book which I would reccomend to anyone who needs help.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Where The Heart Is - Billy Letts What can I say...it's been a year since I closed the book and I still wonder how Novalee and Americus Nation are doing! Fantastic character development and a truly heart-warming story!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not a sappy as it sounds I have read this book four times, and it continues to be my favourite. Watching Novalee build a life for her and her baby from literally nothing is satisfying, fun, and touching. It is a bit cheesy in parts, especially for a cynic like me, but overall, this book makes me feel good.

It was beautifully written and and I rocommend it to anyone.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from "Your Heart will Be Touched, Wherever it is&q This book touched me in so many different ways. It made me laugh out loud ,it made me cry uncontrolably, it brought a warmth to my heart like no other story ever has. Novlee Nation takes us back to the simplicity of life. We are able to make connections to what really matters, to understand that love is powerful and comes to us in many different ways through many different channels. It shows us that strength, determination and, perservernce are qualities that get us through any obstacle life can throw our way. Love is a powerful force and when you allow it into your life nothing is immpossible, "Where the Heart Is" allows us to really feel how the power of love can take you on a whirlwind of experiences. An absolutely excellent book. I would recommend it to everyone.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Let Bygones Be Bygones; Never Give Up When I picked up this book, I didn't really know what it was about. The book itself was beautifully written. Novalee Nation, although dealt a worthless hand, found strength within herself to carry on. She never gave up or forgot about her dreams. The book itself shows that people aren't always as self-centered and useless as they seem, and can actually be caring and supportive. I recommend this book to anyone at all who likes to read. PS -> I still haven't seen the movie.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Where the heart is This book was very interesting and kept you reading. The main character Novalee was amazing she was delt a crapy hand but yet she kept on giving and caring for those she met alond the way and those whom became close to her. I recomend this book to both sexes and a variety of ages. Then go and see the movie, you'll be surprised.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Where the Heart is This book was one of the most amayzing and beautiful stories I have ever read. It kept me interrested in what would happen next. At first before I read this book I thought it only took place the year Americus was born but to my surprise it takes place right untill Americus is seven. In every chpter something unexpected happened like when Amerucus was kidnapped and left in the manger outside a church, and also when Willy Jack's legs were distroyed by the train. I could not keep my eyes off this book and read it in three days. By part two I felt like Novalee was real and was one of my friends telling me the story. All in all this book is one of the best in the world. By, Laura Robert

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best book EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am 10 years old. And when I first started it I couldn't stop. It took me one and a half day to finish it. And I cried my eyes out in every chapter. I saw the movie, but it wasn't as good as the book, and out of all the so many books I read this was the best. Billie Letts writes a truely amazing book. I fell in love with it. I've read it about five times. I cant think of anything better than this. I loved every part in that book, I cant think of any part I didn't like. Thank you I had to let how I felt about that book out.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Must read! I wasn't sure what to make of "Oprah" books and took a chance on this one as a lark. Within five minutes I was hooked and couldn't put it down. The characters, imagery, story were all done so well. You must read this one!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So Unique! I read this book when it first came out and loved it! Such a unique book. Strong character development and a very strong sense of community and importance of people in our lives. What a heroine! It bothers me that this book is only now becoming well known (Oprah, movie)when it was a terrifc read all along. When I first heard about the movie, I swore I'd never see it b/c it might ruin my feelings about the story - "a movie is never as good as the book". But some of the reviewers here have recommended it, so I'll go see it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Where The Heart Can Be Found The first time I heard of this book was when I saw a preview for the movie. I had heard it was based on a book, and I thought it would be neat to read the book. OH MY GOSH!! I was so surprised at how it took hold of me and how I felt like I was inside Novalee's head. It was amazing, literally amazing. Novalee was such a strong woman, even when it all began. She was strong, smart and very bright. Her traits passed down to her child. Novalee felt so real to me, it was like she was the sister I almost never had! I recommend this book to anyone and everyone. It truly tells where the heart is-deep inside everyone, somewhere! (NOTE: I am writing a book about a pregnant girl, based upon the idea of Where The Heart Is, but by far not copying it. If you have any ideas for a title, please email me! I am at a loss for ideas and nothing I have had is good!)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Best I have a soft spot in my heart for pregnant teens, especially if they have nowhere to go. Myself, a 17 year old, I could almost relate to Novalee herself, and once I started reading this book, I literally couldn't put it down. I read it in less than 2 days and when I finished it I felt so good inside and I wanted to read it again. I highly recommend this book, it's my favorite out of Oprah's selection and the best book I've ever read.
Date published: 2000-06-05
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful! This book has proved to be my favourite Oprah selection. It is such a wonderful, heartwarming story, one can't help to fall in love with Novalee and the people that she meets. It is so nice to believe that true happiness can be found by anyone with a good heart.

Read about her survival. Sure to make you love her.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent, most amazing book. I read this book about a year ago, and i just saw the movie tonight. All i have to say is wow. I have never read a more thoughtful, more amazing novel in my entire life, and the movie just topped it all off. VERY very well done, Miss Letts.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Where the Heart is Taken This was a wonderful book, full of humor and insight into the lives of women who like so many of us, undervalue themselves and thus end up settling for less than they deserve. Novalee Nation is an example for all women of what self-empowerment can accomplish. I could not put this book down.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Heart warming and hopeful Where the Heart Is, is one of the few books that has allowed me to feel fully involved, and to be led on an emotional rollercoaster. From drastic feelings of happiness to sadness, Where the Heart Is, is a story that allows people to get in touch with their own inner feelings of love and tenderness.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Where The Heart Is This book was very interesting and exciting, but a complete fantasy. No way is this a realistic book. I enjoyed reading it, as I'm sure everyone else did, but I don't think that this book would have done as well as it's done if Oprah hadn't included it in her Book Club. The back of the book wasn't the interesting, I picked it up because I liked the cover, superficial as it may sound. I trust my judgement, it proved to be truthful. People say they didn't read it because of Oprah, but I don't believe it for a second (even I have to admit, Oprah's name on the cover nudged me forward). Now with it being a major motion picture, people will read it because of that. I don't think Billie Letts should have made a movie on it. It's like she's selling out.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Perfect Christmas Gift Few books have touched my heart in the way this little novel did. It was a quick read and sentimental fool that I am, I had a good cry several times. I found one of this author's other books in Wal-mart and it is on my bedside table waiting for a free weekend. I'm afraid to get started in case I can't stop as with the case of this one. If I try to describe the storyline to anyone who hasn't read it, they can't quite get it. But it is truly marvellous and I am going to suggest to the director of a local stage group that somebody write a script and let's put it on stage. I'd love to meet these characters in person. When I was in the Walmart which happens to be in Smalltown, USA just across the river from SSM, I did look around for signs that someone was living there. I'd sure love to give it a try!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from SUPERB This book is the best one I have read in a long time. I had a hard time putting this book down for even a second. I liked this book because I felt so intouch with the girl in the book. I would seriously recommend this book to anyone. Billie Letts is an excellent writer, she finds words that can really move a person. I would also recommend her other novel: The honk and holler opening soon.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A worthwhile read Most of the reviews I have read pretty much sum up the way I felt about this book as well. At first, I had my doubts...but it didn't take long to get involved in Novalee's life. Very enjoyable. Have loaned it to a friend and if it doesn't get returned, will have to buy another as I will want to read it again I'm sure.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Where the Heart Is I truly enjoyed reading the book. I especially enjoyed all the different people Novalee Nation met in the small town. All added something to the novel. There were many times that I laughed and even cried, being pulled further and further into the story. Who says there aren't happy endings???

Rated 5 out of 5 by from WILL CHANGE YOUR VIEW ON LIFE! This book is an absolute must read, had me clenched from the first page. Novalee becomes one of these endearing friends we all wish we had. Her innocence makes us love her more. This book left me with the same feeling "comfort food" does to me. When I had finally finished it, I had a new outlook on people around me. Life truly is so precious, don't let time slip away, if it's on your mind, say it, and mean it. If it's in your heart, feel it, live it, breath it, experience it!!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Where the Heart Is What a great read! I didn't pick this one up because Oprah reviewed it. She's not my favourite person, but I used my own judgement (which is pretty darn good) and didn't regret a minute :o) I didn't want the book to end and now I waiting anxiously for her second book!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Where the heart is A must read! I couldn't put it down. I carried it everywhere I went and read whenever I had a spare minute. I had to share the story as I was reading it and those I was sharing it with wanted to know more. I just ordered another copy to give as a gift to my niece. She and her whole family will love it; I am sure. Whoever is reading my review of this book - read it - you won't be disappointed.

The interaction of the characters in this book really open ones eyes to the importance of every single person we meet in our daily lives, you never know when you will meet up again. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants an easy read on a rainy Sunday afternoon (or anytime for that matter!)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Read! I loved this book. I couldn't put it down. It is so nice when good things happen to good people. I now find myself looking for books recommended by Oprah. They never disappoint me. I especially love those books where individuals overcome obstacles like the characters in this book.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Really enjoyed this quick read I didn't enjoy this book as much as other people I have discussed it with. My daughter's comment was "I will never again go to Wal-Mart without thinking of the book." I personally found the relationship between Novalee and Forney to be unbelievable at times. Overall though it was a feel good story that was not easy to put down.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Where the heart is A warm, funny, touching book. Although our heroin has nothing in common with me, I connected with her and lived vicariously through her adventures. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and was sorry the end came so fast.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Where The Heart Is I am such a picking reader, and have a hard time reading a book that does not catch me within the first few chapters. I was in between books, waiting for a new one and I picked up Where The Heart is for the third time. I tried to read this book a few times with no luck, and people begged me to just give it a chance. And I am happy to say I did! I read this book in less than a week, and I thourghly enjoyed it. I found the beginning to be a little tough to get used to, all the 7 stuff, but once through it, I couldn't put it down. It definately warms your heart, and gives hope where you see none. I would also highly recommend "What looks like crazy on an ordinary day" It is also full of hope and definately is full of emoition - good & bad.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I wish it was longer. I read this book because it was given to me by my best friend who loves it and knew that I would too. It was amazing, I loved it from the moment I picked it up. I became closely attached to Novalee and anticipated what would happen next in her stirring life. She came to a small town with nothing and found the greatest elements of life she could ever have found. I could not put this book down - I wish it was longer!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A nice surprise! When my aunt gave me this book years ago I didn't think I would like it. I was wrong. It was wonderful. I loved how it showed the growth of a girl's spirit when she seems to have nothing. It was a great story. A must read.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Cracked me up If you want something to read that's funny and will keep you glued this is it. You'll never walk into a Walmart again and not think of this book. It was one of those books I picked up because "Oprah" recommended it. I now look for all books with Oprah's stamp of approval on it and haven't been disappointed since.

From the Publisher

Talk about unlucky sevens. An hour ago, seventeen-year-old, seven months pregnant Novalee Nation was heading for California with her boyfriend. Now she finds herself stranded at a Wal-Mart in Sequoyah, Oklahoma, with just $7.77 in change. But Novalee is about to discover hidden treasures in this small Southwest town--a group of down-to-earth, deeply caring people willing to help a homeless, jobless girl living secretly in a Wal-Mart. From Bible-thumping blue-haired Sister Thelma Husband to eccentric librarian Forney Hull who loves Novalee more than she loves herself, they are about to take her--and you, too--on a moving, funny, and unforgettable journey to . . . From Our Editors

Money doesn't pave the road to salvation - at least not for Novalee Nation. Stranded in a Wal-Mart in Sequoyah, Okla., with just $7.77 to keep her going and her swollen belly that holds seven months of life, Novalle must face the truth: her boyfriend left her and their dream of the good life in Bakersfield, Calif. But Novalee is about to discover the love hidden in this treasure-trove community. Swept under the guardian wings of the blue-haired Sister Thelma Husband, who delivers advice and the Bible, and the wise and elderly photographer Moses Whitecotton, she begins to feel loved. Where the Heart Is captures the warmth and tenderness of this story about love, abandonment and regeneration.
