Amelie

Starring: Audrey Tautou, Mathieu Kassovitz
Director: Jean-Pierre Jeunet

July 1, 2011 | DVD

Absolutely charming -- a triumph of performance and imagination, and a joy to watch. The opening moments of the film depict the circumstances of the birth of the remarkable Amélie Poulain (the irresistible Audrey Tautou), as well as her oddball childhood -- incorrectly diagnosed with a heart condition, Amélie is homeschooled and her mother's early death exacerbates her father's antisocial habits, so she spends a great deal of time alone and indulges in a rich fantasy life. Grown up and working as a waitress in a Montmarte cafe, Amélie's life changes the day she discovers an old tin filled with childhood treasures. She resolves to find its owner and return the box secretly. The results are magnificent and she embarks on a new career as a do-gooder, crafting elaborate schemes to improve the lives of the people around her without them knowing. To jolt her father (Rufus)out of his retirement rut, she steals his beloved garden gnome and sends it around the world, mailing tourist snapshots to her bewildered Papa. She cooks up a romance for hypochondriac co-worker Georgette (Isabelle Nanty) and repugnant regular Joseph (Dominique Pinon). She plays dozens of nasty and hilarious little tricks on the local greengrocer (Urbain Cancelier) for being mean to his delivery boy. In the midst of these ploys, she encounters a young man (Mathieu Kassovitz) with an odd hobby -- he collects and reconstructs ripped-up pictures from photo booths all over the Paris Métro. A complicated stratagem designed to return his photo album betrays that she's fallen for him, but she's so busy fixing other people's lives that she can't figure out how to bring love into her own. The characters are lovingly drawn and marvelously acted (Amélie in particular) and the scenes of Paris are better than any tourist pamphlet. This is an exuberant, funny and fanciful film no one should miss.

The two-disk DVD includes two English featurettes; Q&As with director Jean-Pierre Jeunet and the cast and crew; behind-the-scenes features; audition footage; storyboard features; the "A Quai" music video and more.

I walked into the movie theatre not even knowing what the film was about but intrigued by simply the beauty of Audrey Tautou on the poster. I like subtitles and this French film was unlike anything i've seen before. A highly creative, inspiring and truly enjoyable movie that leaves your heart smiling.

There is NO option to watch the film with no subtitles. No film should ever be released unless that option is included. Not everyone wants to watch a film with print constantly running across the bottom of the screen.

OK, yes, Audrey Tautou was in "The Da Vinci Code." If you want to see her REALLY act, you have to see this, one of the most inspiring movies I have ever seen. You would think that the story involved something of great depth, like fighting disease or overcoming some other great hardship, but this one is different. I left that movie wanting to do everything from simply being nicer to people (a la "Pay It Forward") to drinking good espresso and savouring it so that I would be able to enjoy life just that much more. Such a sweet film... it is a MUST-HAVE!

The film is filled with oddities, that make you follow along with curiosity. It is rich with wonderful imagery, and interesting characters. At no point does the film slow or become stagnant. This is truly the best film I have seen in a very long time.

Absolutely wonderful, I've watched it in theatres several times and purchased the DVD. I can't wait till Hollywood snatches up the actress behind Amelie and teach her some english. I'd give this movie 5 stars if it were longer, too sweet to see it end.

I really enjoyed this unforgetable film. It had a great beginning, expressing the personality of Amelie and her parents' situation. This is a great family film which I enjoyed with my wife, Helena and my daughter who related well with the excellent masterpiece.

After seeing this film you have the greatest sense of bonheur or happiness. It is the only film I have ever paid to see more than once at the theatre. Living in Paris, it made me feel like a tourist again. Some have criticized the fairy-taleness of the film saying it doesn't reflect the reality of Parisian society, but hey? what fairy tale really reflects reality? Isn't cinema about escaping reality anyhow? Finally a film without violence, without a cheezy message or a corny ending. PURE BONHEUR! It has become my drug along with the peppy soundtrack by Yann Tiersen. If you are planning to visit Paris, it is definitely a pre-requisite as many of the locations in the film have now become cult meeting places. So much that it is often difficult to get a table in the once-overlooked café where Amélie waits tables in the film.
