Based on Jane Austen's life this tells the story of the author behind the great romantic works of "Pride and Prejudice", "Sense and Sensibility" and many more. While most of the credible information about the period of Austen's life covered by the movie was burnt shortly after her death was lost, this movie tells a beautiful story and while the details may not be true, as a whole it encapsulates very well a short period of Jane's life. Also beautifully done was the weaving into the plot many of the lines and scenes Austen is famous for and showing for many of her characters (Darcy, Mr. Collins, Wickham, Willoughby and many others) that they were based (at least in part) on the people she new either from day to day life or for singular occurences that stuck out. Even if one puts aside the fact that the ending is not particularly happy and that it's not entirely historically accurate, this is a great period movie with splendid costumes and sets, and amazing performances by the actors. Anne Hathaway and James McAvoy really shine here! Joe Anderson and James Cromwell also give creditable performances. Easily one of my top ten favourite movies!

Emotional, thought provoking, and more then a little fun. Amazing acting, excellent scenery; all bundled together in a nice little love story. A great date movie...
Awesome!

Becoming Jane is a movie based on the life of the author: Jane Austen. Watching a movie based on a person's life is much more interesting than read a book on it. I found that this movie was very exciting, especially because it was based on the true story of Austen's life. The only drawback of a true story is that sometimes there is not a great ending. If you are a true fan of Jane Austen, then you must watch Becoming Jane and discover what truly happened in the life of the author whose books you enjoy reading!
Loved it!

Despite a lot of the criticism that had been directed towards this film, I thought it was delightful in and of itself. Putting aside some of the more obvious speculative aspects of the general plot of the film, the acting, sets and direction were wonderful. James McAvoy gave a brilliant performance as Tom Lefroy, and Anne Hathaway as Jane Austen was well done - even if she's never had to put on an English accent before. The chemistry between the two worked well, in my opinion, and I would recommend this film to anyone interested in the pre-Victorian era.
