I absolutely LOVE this movie! I've watched it several times, and I still can't get enough. There are 2 plots in this movie. The first is the father-son relationship (Ewan McGregor and Christopher Plummer), that is actually a true story - this storyline is Director Mike Mills' father's story. After the death of his wife, Plummer's character tells his son that he's gay, at the age of 75, and that he's been gay his entire life. Throughout the movie, Plummer's character develops a relationship with a younger man, while fighting Terminal Cancer at the same time. The second plot in the film is the development of a romantic relationship between Oliver (Ewan McGregor) and Anna (Melanie Laurent), a French actress. It's not your typical romantic-comedy Hollywood romance, but a realistic story of two people falling in love, and the difficulties that come in a relationship. I love the way this movie was made - it's really different. Mike Mills is a graphic artist, and you can definitely tell by the way he tells these two stories through pictures, dialogue and editing. I highly recommend this movie; it's beautiful, moving, and I've definitely shed a few tears while watching. It's kind of like reading a book: a curl-under-the-covers-with-a-hot-cup-of-tea kind of movie. The acting in this film is fantastic - Christopher Plummer won the Golden Globe on January 2012 for his role in this movie - and very well deserved. Ewan McGregor is a scene stealer, Melanie Laurent is lovely, and the dog Cosmo is just so adorable, it hurts. I absolutely love this movie (as you can probably tell), and I highly recommend it.
