A murder victim is found on the Ontario-Quebec border...and I mean right on the border. The cops from each of the provincial jurisdictions arrive and after a brief pissing contest, are assigned to work together. The eponymous couple of the title are a rule-breaking Quebecois and a preppy Ontarian, each representing some of the stereotypes French and English Canadians have about each other. More dead bodies start turning up and we quickly learn that a serial killer is at work. The motive is related to the game of hockey, Canada's national obsession. It seems someone is not happy about the sport being taken over by American money and the people responsible for this betrayal of the Canadian people are going to pay. Of course the two cops mix like oil and water and we go through the cliched sequences of them finding a way to work together, sort of like "Beverly Hills Cop" or "Bad Boys", but with a uniquely Canadian spin. Like the other mentioned films of this type, "Bon Cop, Bad Cop" effectively blends tense action scenes with goofy humour. Some familiar faces (especially to Canadians) fill the roles and generally everyone looks like they're having fun - which is what you'll also have if you can suspend your critical judgement for a couple of hours and forget you've seen this all before. This is an entertaining but formulaic action film. I'd recommend it if that's all you're looking for.

I wasn’t expecting much from this one, but I was bored one night, went to see it at the theatre and was pleasantly surprised. I’ve watched this movie a few times since and I still laugh every time. There’s so much contrast between the two main characters that it provides a solid foundation for this humorous crime movie. They each have very different ways of doing things, and when they get partnered together, they end up spending most of their time arguing with each other and botching up the case. Under normal circumstances, there’s almost no way they would have ever been paired together, but there’s nothing normal about this movie, and so the contrast the of the two characters works very well. The bad guy, though slightly crazy, is very believable. I think there are a lot of people out there who can relate to him, though few that would go to that extent to make their point. As for the plot, it’s interesting from beginning to end, with a nice balance of comical and serious moments. For those of you who hate subtitles, be warned, this is a bilingual movie, but what more do you expect from a Canadian movie about Canadian issues. I would recommend this movie to any Canadian with a sense of humour and excitement.

My nephew Garry gave me this DVD for Christmas because I had loved the film when I saw it in the theatre. I think it has something for every Canadian taste, but I can't imagine that it would travel beyond our borders. Too much of the humour is based on the French/English differences and on Canadian icons. Although Colm Feore has never been my favourite stage actor, he is perfect for the role of the uptight Toronto police officer. I was not familiar with Patrick Huard, who both wrote the screenplay and took the lead of the laidback Montreal cop, but he is very impressive too. My favourite cameo is Rick Mercer playing a homophobic Don Cherry-type sports analyst. I am sure that there is a Quebec equivalent (perhaps the incomprehensible pathologist) but as the film points out, due to our two solitudes, we never really get the other culture. ****Warning: if you don't like movies with sub-titles, you had better be fully bilingual and understand Quebec French idioms.

This movie is fast moving with an interesting story and characters. The leads play great off one another...Definately a must own!!!! I hope for a sequel!

Très énergétique et amusant. Je demeure dans la région de l'Outaouais et c'est pratiquement la vérité avec humour, si vous voulez. C'est ce qui ce passe ici dans notre région, mais c'est tellement drôle et inatendu comme contexte, qu'il faut en rire. Je lève mon chapeau aux deux acteurs principaux et à la personne qui a écrit ce film.
