Bring It On

Starring: Kirsten Dunst
Director: Peyton Reed

Universal Home Video | February 8, 2005 | DVD

Kirsten Dunst, Eliza Dushku and Gabrielle Union all shine in this energetic and entertaining look at two cheerleading teams. The Toros, a team from the posh Rancho Carne High School in San Diego, have been champions for six years in a row. But the glory palls when new team leader Torrance (Dunst) learns that the previous captain regularly stole the routines of a rival team, the Clovers out of East Compton. The Toros work desperately to come up with a winning routine of their own while the Clovers struggle equally desperately for the funding they need to make it to the championships. In the end, only the best routine can win in Bring It On, a slam-bang comedy that's part satire, part love story and all fun. This DVD version contains deleted scenes, Blaque's "As If" music video and a score of slammin' extras.

This movie is about a girl who takes over her cheerleading sqaud, and soon comes to realize that her cheers are copied from another sqaud. This is the best out of the Bring It On movies, and its the orginial.

I'm almost ashamed at how much I loved this movie...

So here's the thing. My husband and myself were sitting down one evening, clicking through channels, and saw this was on. He said, "Oh, I loved this."

Once I got over my shock, he admitted sheepishly he'd been forced to watch it with some girlfriends, and that I, too, would likely get enthused watching it. It became a dare. So, we started the movie over, and it turns out he was 100% right.

I don't know why I got so caught up in this movie, but it nabbed me. On the surface, there is a linear plot: we watch Torrence (Dunst) become the new head cheerleader at a school where the cheerleaders have won the competitions for years. Yes, apparently, there are competitions. Upon taking the mantle, and picking up a new cheerleader who doesn't really want to be there (Dushku, who is fantastic in this role), Torrence learns something bad about her team, sparks a wicked rivalry with another - much poorer - school, and the fun begins.

That I was actually busting a gut laughing, and getting all tense (and/or embarrassed) at the character interactions astounded me. There's even a well-played gay character that made me go "aww!" once or twice.

I know you won't believe me, but trust me. This movie is worth a guilty watch. And I bet you'll be shaking your imaginary pom-poms, too.

This movie wasn't as good as bring it on all or nothing or bring it on in it to win it but it was still pretty good. The fact that the end took a little twist at the contest and the winners made it a bit better because it made it less predictable.

This is a fun-filled cheer movie that makes you wanna get up and dance. Even if you aren't a cheerleader you'll still laugh!

Notes

Three of the Clovers are portrayed by the singing group Blaque, who also contribute the song "As If" to the soundtrack of the movie. The credits feature the actors miming to B*witched's cover of "Mickey," in tribute to the popular cheerleader video which accompanied the original Toni Basil version in 1982. Torrance: "Omigod! My whole cheerleading career has been a lie." Torrance: {pointing to t-shirt Cliff is wearing} "Is that your band?" Cliff: "The Clash?! No, English punk rock band circa 1977-1983, original line-up anyway."

Description

IN THEATRES: AUGUST 25, 2000 In a contest to win the national cheerleading championships for the sixth year in a row, Torrance Shipman (Kirsten Dunst), team captain of the San Diego Toros at Rancho Carne High School, must show her team how to beat out their rival squad, the Clovers. Clovers' captain Isis (Gabrielle Union) is struggling to raise enough money to make it to the competition, while Torrance is facing up to the fact that her team's cheers are not original. A comic face-off between die-hard cheerleaders, BRING IT ON has teen spunk, team spirit, and lots of girl power.

Synopsis

Stellar Kristin Dunst, as cheerleading captain Torrance Shipman, leads six-time defending cheerleading champions, The Toros, against a talented inner-city squad, the East Compton Clovers, in BRING IT ON. The film presents a lighthearted, slightly quirky exploration of the cutthroat but perky world of professional cheerleading competitions. Only days after taking over the reins of her hallowed suburban high school squad, Torrance is presented with the ugly truth about her team's success when a new recruit, Missy (Eliza Dushku), a semi-outcast gymnast, realizes that The Toros' cheer was stolen from another team. Missy takes Torrance to inner-city L.A. to see the same routine being performed by the East Compton Clovers. The Clovers throw down the gauntlet; they are going to challenge The Toros for the national championships on ESPN 2. As if having to find new cheers were not enough trouble, Torrance also has romantic decisions to make: she has to choose between her oily but pretty current boyfriend, and Missy's less popular, but rocking brother, Cliff (Jesse Bradford). BRING IT ON melds a hint of the satire in movies like SMILE and DROP DEAD GORGEOUS with the competitive fire of films like THE KARATE KID and WHITE MEN CAN'T JUMP to provide a captivating story enhanced by the engaging performance of rising star Dunst.
