Carlito's Way

Starring: Al Pacino, Sean Penn
Director: Brian De Palma

Universal Studios Home Video | May 26, 1998 | DVD

Spanish Harlem, 1975. Aging gangster and former drug lord Carlito Brigante is fed up with corrupt street life. Revisiting his old stomping grounds, he realizes his type of criminality has been rendered obsolete by the new breed of voraciously violent felons. Trying to make good on old promises, the ex-con locates his old girlfriend Gail, now a topless dancer in a sleazy midtown dive. Once they're reunited, he plans to establish a legitimate rental car business in the beautiful Bahamas. But fateful forces keep Carlito from reaching his island paradise: namely, his drug-addicted lawyer who keeps dragging Carlito into unlawful schemes. But Carlito's time may be running out, especially since he's now become the target for a band of relentless criminals.

Notes

"Carlito's Way" was adapted by David Koepp ("Jurassic Park") from two novels by author Edwin Torres, a native of New York's barrio and long-time Justice of the New York State Supreme Court. When asked about the source material for his novels Torres says: "There are no more rules -- that's the theme of `Carlito's Way,'... No moral standards. I've talked with guys I knew, knocked-around guys who have done time for homicide, and they're shocked and outraged at some of the things that happen today." Torres has seen both sides of the law; he's witnessed street crime as well as corruption among higher-ups. Some scenes are in Spanish with English subtitles. Rated BBFC 18 by the British Board of Film Classification. Shot in New York City and Kaufman Astoria Studios in Queens in DeLuxe color, Technicolor processing, Eastman color film, and Panavision, with the original aspect ratio: 2.35:1. DTS in Selected Theatres. Soundtrack available on 550 Music/Epic Soundtrax. Bill Capucilli was the standin for Al Pacino. Main title design and digital compositing by R/Greenberg Associates West. Optical effects by The Effects House, visual effects by Pacific Data Image. Additional credits: Nicholas Meyers (music editor), The Hit Factory (original score recording facility), and Anthony Ortiz (recordist). Other songs featured in the film: "Pillow Talk," "Parece Mentira," and "Do It ('Til You're Satisfied)." Feature film debut for Ingrid Rogers who plays Steffie. Copyright 1993 Universal City Studios.
