Donnie Brasco

Starring: Johnny Depp, Al Pacino, Anne Heche
Director: Mike Newell

Columbia TriStar Home Video | May 4, 2004 | DVD

If you like your mob flicks riddled with shuddering tension and bolstered by stunning realism, then you can't go wrong with Donnie Brasco. Johnny Depp plays an undercover FBI operative who puts the mark on a low-level gangster, played with warm pathos by Al Pacino. Lefty Ruggiero may be a murderous criminal and Joe Pistone may be the law, but the two develop a relationship that borders on the love of a father for his son… and vice versa. Pistone gradually loses touch with his family as he falls into the world of organized crime, struggling to hang on to who he really is and the job he has to do. Stunningly powerful, this true story is a brilliant entry into the pantheon of gangster movies. This DVD version contains two featurettes, five deleted scenes with director's commentary, an isolated music score, a photo gallery and heaps of fascinating extras.

    A Truly Underrated Mafia Movie

When you hear and listen to people talk about Mafia and/or Mob movies, you hear "Goodfellas" or "The Godfather", or maybe "Scarface". In my simple opinion this movie should be up there with all those movie. This movie is a real piece of art, and masterpiece. Johnny Depp give a great performance, a truly masterful one, one of his best. Al Pacnio really fell into this role, it was almost like old for him, being a veteran in that genre of film. The Dialogue is great between all the characters, and the plot, is true. Very few details are changed from the actual story. Awesome movie.
