      Breathless

      By Jean-Paul Belmondo

      Criterion Collection | October 23, 2007 | DVD
Eighty-nine minutes that shook the world. Former "Cahiers du CinTma" critic Jean-Luc Godard threw everything he had learned from years of movie watching into his debut feature -- creating an enormously influential film and a seminal study of existential longing and betrayal. Michel Poiccard, a petty Parisian thief, steals a car, shoots a cop, then holes up in the apartment of his American girlfriend, Patricia. Lounging in the bare-walled rooms of their hovel, Patricia quotes Faulkner, as Michel playfully seduces her. While floating on the edge of a violent fate, Michel just kills time: borrowing money from his former girlfriend, mimicking Bogart's facial tics, hanging out at cafTs and running around town searching out old friends. Meanwhile, the manhunt continues, and the police dragnet slowly closes in on him. The clarion call of Frances Nouvelle Vague, "Breathless" is still a brash, iconoclastic and exhilarating masterpiece.

      The Magician

      By Max Von Sydow

      Criterion Collection | October 12, 2010 | Blu-Ray
Ingmar Bergman delves into the unknown in this eerie meditation on mysticism and the obtuse symbolism of the cinema. A rag-tag troupe of actors in 19th century Sweden travel in a medicine show through the countryside. One day a merchant and his wife inexplicably hold them captive and they meet a magician who leads them through a world of bewildering curiosities, filled with hypnotists, spells, love potions and the dead who reawaken. A beautiful and darkly lit imagistic tale.

      Grand Illusion

      By Jean Gabin

      Criterion Collection | September 9, 2008 | DVD
With no battle scenes and only one death, Renoir's GRAND ILLUSION makes one of the most stirring antiwar statements ever put on film. With a legendary performance from Von Stroheim as the aristocratic German officer in charge of a WWI POW camp from which two captive Frenchman try to escape, the film stresses the relationships between the men forced into this situation and the way in which social classes have no bearing in matters of war. The film's history is as interesting as the film itself, as the original print was believed to be seized by Germany during WWII after Joseph Goebbels declared it to be dangerous.
