Emma

May 19, 2009 | DVD

Emma Woodhouse (Gwyneth Paltrow) has just discovered how wonderful it feels to help others. With her new-found altruism leading the way, she sets out to find a suitable husband for her new friend, Harriet Smith (Toni Collette). As she muddles everything, then attempts to patch things back up, she slowly realizes that matchmaking might not be her thing. It takes her awhile, but she eventually discovers that looking after her own interests makes her, and everyone around her, much happier. A lighthearted version of the Jane Austen classic, Emma will capture your heart and imagination.

This is a wonderful adaptation of one of Austen's acclaimed novels. Douglas McGrath's screenplay makes the most of the book's humour through clever blocking of the actors and editing, and maintains a great pace throughout.

Gwyneth Paltrow stars as Emma, bringing to life this character's complexities with wonderful nuances and levels. She is surrounded by a stellar ensemble that includes Toni Collette (ALWAYS amazing!), Jeremy Northam, Ewan McGregor and Greta Scacchi. My three favourite performances in this film come from Alan Cumming, Sophie Thompson and Juliet Stevenson - their timing is incredible.

Enjoy a wonderful evening of humour and romance with Emma ...
