Filmmaker Federico Fellini continues to explore his fascination with clowns and the circus in this one-of-a-kind salute to the big top performers of yesteryear that also cleverly parodies documentary techniques. In the first part of the film, Fellini takes a nostalgic, autobiographical look at his youthful infatuation with the circus. Fellini himself then enters the film, along with a television crew, to interview a few of the famous surviving clowns. The film finishes with a symbolic mock funeral performed by clowns.

Based on the classic tale by Isak Dinesen, Gabriel Axel's superb film mixes both the pious and the sensual to deliver a veritable feast for both the senses and the soul. Babette's Feast is the story of two girls who live with their devoted Protestant minister father in a Danish fishing village. They grow into women and attract the attention of two men, but their father's influence keeps them from consummating their love. Many years later, a French girl named Babette comes to live with them. She obviously has extraordinary skills as a chef, but never questions her adopted family's plain fare. After the father dies and the sisters have become old women, Babette wins a lottery for 10,000 francs. She begs the frugal pair to let her spend the money on a feast for the entire village. They reluctantly agree, and the resultant repast is so extraordinary that it changes their lives forever. The photography is sumptuously delightful and the story irresistibly compelling in this award-winning film.

A touching and philosophical film, set in the 18th century and based on the diaries of real-life French doctor Jean Itard. Itard fought authorities for the right to take charge of the social and intellectual education of a "wild child" -- a young boy who somehow had managed to survive, alone and uncared for, in nature. Although most of the medical establishment felt that the child, who could not speak and often exhibited violent behavior, was hopelessly retarded, the tenacious Itard, with techniques sometimes kind and frequently cruel, managed to prove them wrong.

NOT ONE LESS is the heartwarming tale of a 13-year-old girl, Wei Minzi (Wei), who is a substitute teacher living in a poor village in rural China. She is given a month-long assignment to teach a classroom of 28 students, ages 6 through 10, with instructions to make sure that all the students, "not one less," stay in school. Wei approaches the job as any 13-year-old might--like a sullen teenager--but because she's close in age to her students, they respond to her with playful attentiveness. This film is a clear departure from director Yimou's dramatic and controversial earlier films JU DOU (1990), and RAISE THE RED LANTERN (1991). In NOT ONE LESS, Zhang uses a straightforward documentary style enriched with scenic shots of Wei walking over the dusty footpaths of her village, backed by lush, cascading mountains. The children, including Wei, are non-actors who play themselves. As the story goes, Zhang Huike (Zhang), the class troublemaker, is sent to the city to find work and pay off his parents' debts. Teacher Wei sets out to find him and bring him back. Wei puts herself on the line for her tiny school and its impoverished community, and miraculously, her message travels farther than she'd ever imagined it might.
