Synopsis:
A bittersweet comedy directed by, and starring Gerard Jugnot, Monsieur Batignole tells the story of an ordinary Parisian Gentile butcher who gets a crash course in Jewish reality when a young escapee neighbour falls into his lap during the summer of 1942.
It's the summer of 1942 and Paris is in the hands of the German army who request the collaboration of French citizens to round up Jews. As they are about to escape to Switzerland, the Bernstein family are turned in by their neighbor's future son-in-law, a mediocre playwright named Pierre Jean (Jean-Paul Rouve). His future father-in-law, a butcher named Edmond, unwittingly participates in sending them to the camps. Through his continued collaboration with the fascist Colonel Spreich, Pierre Jean obtains the Bernsteins' vast apartment for his in-laws and himself and gets Edmond appointed as official supplier for the German occupation forces.
As Edmond is hosting a reception for their German benefactor, he opens the door to find 12 year old Simon, one of the Bernstein boys who has escaped and made his way to his apartment, where Edmond and his family now live. To avoid trouble, Edmond agrees to temporarily hide Simon. Edmond finds it increasingly difficult to conceal the boy and approaches the corrupt smuggler who was originally hired by the Bernsteins and arranges for him to take Simon to Switzerland in exchange for a Renoir painting confiscated from the Bernsteins' flat. Simon is soon joined by his two little cousins, also orphaned by the war. Edmond finds himself getting more and more attached to the three children. Risking all, he decides to help them make their way to the Swiss border. But that's where his troubles really begin for Edmond in this deeply moving story of an ordinary man who discovers extraordinary courage in himself.

A famed 17th century writer courageously makes enemies of France's polite society by exposing their hypocrisies in political pamphlets. But his bravery in politics does not extend to romance. Cyrano de Bergerac, pining away for love of his cousin Roxanne, refuses to reveal his affections for fear that she will find his grotesque form unappealing. Instead, Cyrano teaches the beautiful but stupid Christian how to woo Roxanne. Though she initially finds Christian attractive, it is his beautiful poetry and gorgeously written letters -- all penned by Cyrano -- that win her heart. Christian dies in battle before he ever has the chance to tell Roxanne the truth, and Cyrano keeps the secret until his own death.

Louis Malle based this semi-autobiographical film on a painful childhood memory. In occupied France, Jews had to hide to stay alive. But young Julien Quentin isn't aware of this, and when several new students arrive at his Catholic school, Julien knows only that he likes Jean Bonnet, one of the new boys. They two become fast friends; then, one day, Julien figures out the truth about Jean: he's Jewish, and in hiding from the Nazis. And in a moment of irrecoverable thoughtlessness, Julien makes a tragic mistake...

A wealthy businessman living on the island of La Reunion orders a bride by mail and receives -- instead of his intended -- a beautiful, mysterious woman with a flimsy excuse. He marries the imposter anyway, but his dream life is shattered when the woman absconds with his bank account and leads him into a murky drama of missing persons and murder. Ultimately, this strange tale transforms into a surprisingly powerful adult love story, in which both participants find themselves able to forgive each other's failings and transgressions -- allowing them to move forward without regret, or undue fear of what the future might hold. In the film's finale, Truffaut returns to the same barren, snowbound cabin that he used to such great effect in "Shoot the Piano Player", only this time the results are substantially less fatalistic.
