A fascinating, surreal view of a filmmaker's efforts to develop a new project, 8 1/2 stars Fellini regular Marcello Mastroianni in this semiautobiographical piece about a movie director's midlife crisis. Replete with fabulous performances and signature Fellini visual touches, it stars Anouk Aimée, Sandro Milo, and Claudia Cardinale. 8 1/2 is a touching, hilarious, and meditative viewing experience.

Ingmar Bergman delves into the unknown in this eerie meditation on mysticism and the obtuse symbolism of the cinema. A rag-tag troupe of actors in 19th century Sweden travel in a medicine show through the countryside. One day a merchant and his wife inexplicably hold them captive and they meet a magician who leads them through a world of bewildering curiosities, filled with hypnotists, spells, love potions and the dead who reawaken. A beautiful and darkly lit imagistic tale.

Louis Malle based this semi-autobiographical film on a painful childhood memory. In occupied France, Jews had to hide to stay alive. But young Julien Quentin isn't aware of this, and when several new students arrive at his Catholic school, Julien knows only that he likes Jean Bonnet, one of the new boys. They two become fast friends; then, one day, Julien figures out the truth about Jean: he's Jewish, and in hiding from the Nazis. And in a moment of irrecoverable thoughtlessness, Julien makes a tragic mistake...
