When Disney kicked into gear in the 1990s we were all looking forward to their yearly production. They had a great run with Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King and Aladdin among others. Among these were the "serious" ones like Lion King and Pocahontas, and the goofy, more Looney Tunes inspired ones, like Aladdin, Emperors New Groove, and this one, Hercules. Incorporating the styles of a british artist and animator involved in The Wall, Hercules looked and felt very different. The humour lent itself to Aladdin, and with good reason, it was the same group who worked on Hercules.

The story is fairly straightforward, within the Greek myth, and as such, doesn't really screw too much with us, in that Disney way. The comic relief should've been the demonic assitants, but everyone are funny here, so no one really gives and relief.

A very reccomended movie. They tried it again later, with Emperors New Groove (worked) and the final classic animation movie they made for many years, Home on the range (didn't really work). But this was in my oppinion the last of the greats from Disney.

Forget those legendary labors--this teenage Herc's the goofy and lovable adopted scion of mortal parents, toiling on earth to prove himself to Zeus, his Olympian dad. His demi-god gifts score him money, fame, and product endorsements, but he can't attain full deity (or "True Hero") status--and defeat a jealous Hades--without the help of his satyr friend Phil and the true love of beautiful Megara. Features the voices of Tate Donovan, Danny De Vito, James Woods, and more. Academy Award Nomination: Best Original Song ("Go the Distance").
