My Neighbor Totoro

Director: Hayao Miyazaki

Buena Vista Home Entertainment | March 7, 2006 | DVD

Two young sisters move to the Japanese countryside with their father, while their mother recuperates from an unspecified illness back at the city hospital. The children's strange new environment turns out to be a wonderland of living beauty that the two investigate with both curiosity and excitement. In addition to the exotic real-life creatures they encounter, a furry woodland sprite (who can only be seen by children) introduces them to a fantastic realm of tricks and possibilities.

This film is highly acclaimed, and for good reason! It is simple enough that even a toddler could enjoy it, and so well done that adults will too! Perfect for any age, this is definatly one for the collection!

Wondrous story for young and old

This is one of the most beautiful animated movies ever created. The artwork is just stunning. I can watch it over and over and just drink in the images and moods created for this film.

This movie appeals to children for the sense of wonder that it creates about the world and about mysterious magical creatures.

For adults, we can look back wistfully on our own childhoods and remember what those carefree days felt like when imagination was bigger than reality.

The story crosses generations too. Who can't relate to moving to a new place, or worrying about someone who is ill, or searching for someone who is lost.

I highly recommend this movie for children 5 and up (younger than that and the story may be a bit too confusing and slow moving).

    Unforgettable

A powerful movie that explores the importance of the human connection with nature, community, and family. As always, Miyazaki's creatures and fantasy worlds belie deeper, almost cautionary themes. The plot weaves and bobs peaking in explosively beautiful scenes that tie together the story's messages. Personally, my all-time favourite Miyazaki feature!

THis movie is great for younger kids. There isn't a very good plot but I love the characters so much. I've watched it many times just to see the totoro and Mei because they are so realistic and creative.
    Altogether a very interesting movie!
