New Waterford Girl

Starring: Andrew McCarthy, Mark McKinney, Cathy Moriarty

Alliance Home Video | September 2, 2008 | DVD

Synopsis:

Fifteen year old Mooney Pottie is a misfit. Her dreams of attending a writing college in New York City are too big for the small, conservative coal-mining town of New Waterford, Cape Breton. In the mid-70's in this cramped little Catholic community on Canada's east coast, there's only one reason a young lady would leave -- and it would not be by choice! A high-spirited sixteen year old New Yorker named Lou moves into town, bringing her fists of justice and fury: dropping guys with a single punch, if they deserve it. Thanks to her somewhat randy pal, Mooney comes up with an escape plan.

This is a terrific film--funny, moving. Great characters, scenery, and depiction of rural NS life in the 70s.

This is the best Canuck flick ever - a small town girl wants nothing more than to blow that popsicle stand and a New York big city girl wants nothing more than to fit in

They come up with a wild plan to achieve each of their goals, and find that getting what you want is not always what you need

Great performances by a solid cast - Mary Walsh rules -

I think the most touching moment may have been the feild party when the teens were singing the old songs, connecting them to a heritage with a marginal future, but still drawing such strenght of identity from it

Low budge, great soundtrack, wish it was for sale. Love Mr. McCarthy, even though I hated him when he was a teen.

I loved this movie! It's funny, dramatic, and more funny! Great acting by all the cast especially by Patrick Joyce, who played Darcy. He was my favourite character! Overall, it was an extraordinary movie with great acting!
