Pride and Prejudice (Mini-Series)

Starring: Colin Firth
Director: Simon Langton

A&E Home Video | June 1, 2002 | DVD

From Jane Austen's classic novel about the morals and mores of the class system in Georgian England. The intelligent and spirited Elizabeth Bennet is one of five daughters -- which, during that era, meant trouble: because women cannot inherit, upon her father's death her family's home will become the property of their nearest male relative. Only marriage, preferably to someone wealthy, can ensure her security. But the proud young lady instantly takes offense when Mr. Darcy, a promising newcomer in town, doesn't seem quite admiring enough, and she spurns his advances. Slowly and painfully, Elizabeth realizes her error, but not before it seems she has lost Mr. Darcy forever.

    "THE" Pride and Prejudice Movie

It's not like this DVD really needs another review, but I'm going to add my two cents worth in anyways! This is 'THE' adaptation of "Pride and Prejudice". The one staring Keira Knightley is great, but this one is better. Colin Firth is adorable as Darcy (I personally like Matthew McFayden better, but that's based solely on looks. Firth plays a more likeable and human Darcy)! Truly a testament to the greatness of BBC adaptations and the talent of Jane Austen.

    The Definitive RomCom

Colin Firth is, was and always will be the only Darcy. This version of the first ever Romantic story told through the eyes of Simon Langton takes you back to Jane Austen's England, and the magic she saw when creating her stories. It is without a doubt above any other version ever made.

    Forever Wonderful!

I must have watched this BBC program at least 100 times and I still love it. I think that is both a testament to the masterful story-telling of Jane Austen and also the brilliantly constructed adaptation by Simon Langton. Colin Firth is the very image of the proud, kind-hearted, aristocratic Darcy. Furthermore Jennifer Ehle not only takes on the role of Elizabeth Bennet but she becomes Elizabeth Bennet, fault and all. In entirity the 1995 cast is perfect which makes for a film that stands out. No adaptation of Austen has ever come as close to the brilliance of the literature like this BBC adaptation, although Emma Thompsons Sense and Senibility comes pretty close. Any true Austen fan will love this film, guarenteed!

This is a beautiful addition to any ardent Jane Austen fan's collection. The acting in all the roles is wonderful and thoroughly enjoyable.
I have to say I enjoyed this version much more than the movie version with Kiera Knightly.
It's more faithful to the book , and Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy will make you never want to see ,anyone else in the role.
One of my many favorite scenes is the one where Elizabeth and Mr. & Mrs. Gardener spend an evening at Pemberley and Elizabeth is standing beside Darcy's sister while she plays the piano forte.....I would love to look up and see an incredibly handsome man giving me the same look that Darcy is giving Elizabeth. So check this one out and see if you don't agree.

I recently purchased the A&E Production set of Pride and Prejudice. This is the collection that starred Colin Firth. I had read the Jane Austin book years ago, and it remains one of my all time favourites. I have always wanted to purchase this collection, and am not dissapoined that I did.
This presentation is excellent, and really captures the book, era & countryside. The acting is superb as were the costumes. If you are a Jane Austin fan I highly recommend that you add this to your collection. You will want to watch it over & over!

    Something Is Missing

Having seen the BBC version on VHS several years ago, I was eagerly looking forward to having and viewing my own Collector's Edition. Unfortunately, one very famous scene was deleted from the A & E issue, and I am very disappointed in A & E for omitting the Colin Firth career-making shot referred to during an interview with Tristan Bonham-Carter in the bonus material as "Colin's wet T-shirt moment." This is the same scene referred to hilariously in the "Brigit Jones" bonus material interview, and much treasured by Colin Firth fans around the world. What a shame to delete this delightful, sexy scene! I wonder if the BBC website carries the REAL version!

I recently have had the absolute joy of buying and viewing countless times the 3-disc collectors edition and I promise you the "wet t-shirt" scene is definitely in there. Check it out : )

Need I say more? This version is the CLASSIC CLASSIC Pride and Prejudice ever made. And to think that I once thought the Black and White version by Sir Laurence Olivier was the best! (Well, Mr. Firth also thought so too!) I'll be watching it for the nth time soon!

If I could just watch one movie for the rest of my life it would definetly be this one. This Is my favourite all time movie. I watched it several years ago on TV on A&E and fell immediately in love with it, and it's time period. This movie is a classic and one you'll enjoy if you are a Jane Austen fan. There is absolutely nothing that I could say bad about it. The acting is superb as well as the cinematography. I watch this movie at least twice a year. It is without a doubt a keeper. I highly reccomend this movie.

I've been a fan of A&E'S Pride & Prejudice for years and own the box set, but I couldn't resist picking up this collector's dvd. I love all the extra features, especially the cast interviews and the documentary about making the series. This is a must for any Austen fan! There's something magical about Colin Firth's performance, he really is the perfect Mr Darcy. Like me, you will watch it over and over again. The companion book is also a great addition. A classic for any dvd library.

This movie is worth watching again and again and again.

When they went ahead and brought this version of Jane Austin's movie to life with such an outstanding cast of characters, how could one ever think that they could top this?
With the new 2006 release of this same movie, it just cannot even remotely trigger the same emotion and intensity as this earlier version.
I reccomend this movie to anyone with a heart and a longing to find that perfect love.

I received these DVDs as a gift at Christmas time and because of them I have fallen in love with Pride and Prejudice all over again. It is only late January and I have already watched the series three times. They are well casted, directed and are very true to the book- I had to read the book again after watching them the first time.

I first read this book when I was 12 and was at first taken aback by the lanuage used but I my own knowledge expanded I found that I loved the book which then lead me on the path to other classic tales like Jane Erye by Charlotte Bronte and even other books by Jane Austen. When I recieved the DVD set for my 14th birthday I was taken aback again by the honesty that the movie had to the book I feel that this is a great movie. I should probably mention that I watch it every sick day that I have.
