Pride and Prejudice (Mini-Series)

Starring: Colin Firth
Director: Simon Langton

A&E Home Video | June 1, 2002 | DVD

From Jane Austen's classic novel about the morals and mores of the class system in Georgian England. The intelligent and spirited Elizabeth Bennet is one of five daughters -- which, during that era, meant trouble: because women cannot inherit, upon her father's death her family's home will become the property of their nearest male relative. Only marriage, preferably to someone wealthy, can ensure her security. But the proud young lady instantly takes offense when Mr. Darcy, a promising newcomer in town, doesn't seem quite admiring enough, and she spurns his advances. Slowly and painfully, Elizabeth realizes her error, but not before it seems she has lost Mr. Darcy forever.

It's not like this DVD really needs another review, but I'm going to add my two cents worth in anyways! This is 'THE' adaptation of "Pride and Prejudice". The one staring Keira Knightley is great, but this one is better. Colin Firth is adorable as Darcy (I personally like Matthew McFayden better, but that's based solely on looks. Firth plays a more likeable and human Darcy)! Truly a testament to the greatness of BBC adaptations and the talent of Jane Austen.

    The Definitive RomCom

Colin Firth is, was and always will be the only Darcy. This version of the first ever Romantic story told through the eyes of Simon Langton takes you back to Jane Austen's England, and the magic she saw when creating her stories. It is without a doubt above any other version ever made.

    Forever Wonderful!

I must have watched this BBC program at least 100 times and I still love it. I think that is both a testament to the masterful story-telling of Jane Austen and also the brilliantly constructed adaptation by Simon Langton. Colin Firth is the very image of the proud, kind-hearted, aristocratic Darcy. Furthermore Jennifer Ehle not only takes on the role of Elizabeth Bennet but she becomes Elizabeth Bennet, fault and all. In entirity the 1995 cast is perfect which makes for a film that stands out. No adaptation of Austen has ever come as close to the brilliance of the literature like this BBC adaptation, although Emma Thompsons Sense and Senibility comes pretty close. Any true Austen fan will love this film, guarenteed!

Wow, it was so much like the book. Great acting on both leading roles. Colin Firth is so good in this mini series. I think any Jane Austen fan should own this DVD.
