Animated films in the 1990s are lofty projects with dramatic stories, heroic characters and epic conflicts between good and evil. This film definitely belongs to that group as it's an unforgettable recounting of the story of Moses (Val Kilmer) beginning when he's set adrift on a river in infancy. Pharaoh Seti (Patrick Stewart) brings the boy up, setting off a rivalry between Moses and Rameses (Ralph Fiennes). There is violence in Prince of Egypt but it appears in such a way that it doesn't exist as a patch on the movie's fabric. It is an integral part of it, showing just how brutal these times were. The film is spectacularly animated, and that vibrance and beauty takes on further resonance in this DVD edition, which does wonders for the impressive score.
