When the Allies discover the Nazis are planning to use the Lost Ark of the Covenant as a weapon, they send archeologist Indiana Jones to find it first. Ford is like a cross between Humphrey Bogart and a Superball in this bare-knuckled, barnstorming, pot-boiling, eye-popping, cliffhanging bucket of Technicolor popcorn.
Tom Selleck was originally intended for the lead, but was committed to his "Magnum, PI" role on TV and could not get out of his contract. Filmed in Tunisia, France, Peru, Hawaii, and EMI Elstree Studios in Borehamwood, England. Finished 12 days ahead of schedule for an estimated budget of $22 million. Color by Rank, Metrocolor prints, filmed in Panavision. Academy Awards were also given for Special Achievement (in Effects Editing) and Best Visual Effects. Followed by two sequels, "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" and "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade", also available on video. Copyright held by Lucasfilm, Ltd., 1981.
