Repulsion

Roman Polanski's expressionistic horror masterpiece charts the gradual disintegration of a young woman's personality -- from the inside out. Carol is an attractive Belgian woman living in a dreary London flat with her sister Helen. We see her absentmindedly sleepwalk through life, seemingly oblivious to everyone around her. One night, however, things begin to change. While preparing for bed, Carol hears the sounds of her sister making love in an adjacent bedroom. The animalistic noises strangely excite her, but also fill her with disgust and dread. When Helen and her boyfriend leave for a weekend trip, Carol finally loses her tenuous grip on reality. A series of increasingly surreal hallucinations haunts her, forcing her to react violently to perceived threats from nearly every man she encounters. Eventually, Carol lashes out at the phantoms that are tormenting her -- with deadly results for a would-be suitor.
