Rome - The Complete First Season

Starring: Kevin McKidd, Ray Stevenson

Warner Home Video | August 1, 2011 | DVD

(HBO Dramatic Series) Four hundred years after the founding of the Republic, Rome is the wealthiest city in the world, a cosmopolitan metropolis of one million people; epicenter of a sprawling empire. The Republic was founded on principles of shared power and fierce personal competition, never allowing one man to seize absolute control. But now, those foundations are crumbling, eaten away by corruption and excess. After eight years of war, two soldiers, Lucius Vorenus and Titus Pullo unwittingly become entwined in the historical events of ancient Rome. A serialized drama of love and betrayal, masters and slaves, husbands and wives, ROME chronicles a turbulent era that saw the death of the republic and the birth of an empire.

    Rome.

    Wow.

I have no idea how historically accurate this HBO production is. But it is wonderful eye-candy. The acting is amazing. The sets are amazing. The costumes are amazing. The story-line, plotting, pacing, character development, the whole thing is simply amazing. Love the music. Can hardly wait to finish watching Season 1 and get into Season 2. And to boot Caesar is played by one of my favourite actors, Ciaran Hines! Just loved him in Persuasion. Run right out and rent (or purchase) this series. So very worth your money and time!

It's now on my Chapters Wishlist!

Amazing series. Not always historically accurate, but is close enough and is entertaining enough that you can overlook any faults. I gave this 4/5 instead of a perfect score because I'm supposed to be rating the DVD set, and I think it's overpriced. But otherwise, it is worth watching, for sure. Too bad it was only two seasons (it was cut short because HBO did not want to spend so much money on it).

This was extremely well done although my daughter enjoys questioning historically correct things such as, "Why is Cato wearing a black toga in the Senate?" My family enjoys the after movie discussions!

This is a magnificient and original tv series. It takes you back to the days of Julius Caesar and shows you the everyday life of people of different classes. It gets every detail right, straight down to the graffiti on the walls. Filled with war, politics and romance, this series has characters you love and is very, very addictive.
