The first thing that impressed me about this DVD is the picture and
sound qualtiy. I can remember seeing this film back in the 70's in
high school. The print was dull and lifeless and the sound was
scratchy and out of sync. This print is fantastic! The colours are
vibrant, the sound is clear and crisp. This film looks like it was
shot in 1996 instead of 1966.
There is not much to say about the story of Romeo and Juliet that
has not already been said. But, the great thing about this film is
that it lifts the story off the page and off the stage and makes it
feel real and alive.
Olivia Hussey, possibly one of the most beautiful dark haired, fair
skinned women ever to appear on screen, defines the role of Juliet.
She is not just another pretty face. She is the embodiment of the
character. Michael York as Tybalt and John McEnery as Mercutio are
superbly cast. They bring a gritty reality to these characters that
you don't often see with this play.
