Romeo and Juliet

Starring: Olivia Hussey, Leonard Whiting
Director: Franco Zeffirelli

Paramount Home Entertainment | February 14, 2012 | DVD

Flamboyant and very popular adaptation of the famous Shakespearean tragedy, in which actual teenagers play the leads. Two young lovers, who come from feuding families, desperately wish to stay together. They go to a gentle friar for help, and, in hopes their wedding will end the conflict, he comes up with an ingenious plot to unite them. But when a miscommunication destroys their plans, they make a tragic decision -- a decision that brings peace, but too late to help the lovers themselves.

The first thing that impressed me about this DVD is the picture and sound qualtiy. I can remember seeing this film back in the 70's in high school. The print was dull and lifeless and the sound was scratchy and out of sync. This print is fantastic! The colours are vibrant, the sound is clear and crisp. This film looks like it was shot in 1996 instead of 1966.

There is not much to say about the story of Romeo and Juliet that has not already been said. But, the great thing about this film is that it lifts the story off the page and off the stage and makes it feel real and alive.

Olivia Hussey, possibly one of the most beautiful dark haired, fair skinned women ever to appear on screen, defines the role of Juliet. She is not just another pretty face. She is the embodiment of the character. Michael York as Tybalt and John McEnery as Mercutio are superbly cast. They bring a gritty reality to these characters that you don't often see with this play.

This movie, although older, is probably the best movie. I cant help it that I am in love with the book, and also the character. If you have not read shakespears book yet, then watch the movie. I guarantee you will like it, if you enjoy love movies and tearjerkers you will enjoy this movie.
