Rosemary's Baby

Starring: Mia Farrow, John Cassavetes, Ralph Bellamy
Director: Roman Polanski

Paramount Home Video | August 6, 2004 | DVD

You can't do much better in the genre of horror than this 1968 masterpiece from acclaimed director Roman Polanski (Chinatown). Faithfully adapting the popular novel by Ira Levin (The Stepford Wives, The Boys From Brazil) this is the classic tale of ancient evil infiltrating a luxury apartment building in mid-town Manhattan. Guy and Rosemary (John Cassavetes and Mia Farrow) are a young couple who have moved into an apartment with a strange history. Guy befriends the elderly couple downstairs (Ruth Gorden - who won an Oscar for her performance - and Sidney Blackmer) and - soon after - good-fortune befalls them. Guy lands an important role in a Broadway play, while Rosemary, to her great joy, discovers she is pregnant. But as she becomes stricken with strange, reoccurring dreams, disturbing premonitions about herself and the baby, and an unnatural pain in her stomach, she slowly learns the truth about the coven that dwells in the building, the evil machinations of the elderly couple and her husband, and of the horror that slowly grows inside her. Rosemary's Baby, with its subtle, creeping terror and mounting paranoia is a stellar cinematic achievement.

    Forty One Years Scary

After moving into an apartment, Rosemary (Mia Farrow) becomes pregnant with her husband, (John Cassavetes) an aspiring actor; however, her pregnancy is anything but smooth and as time passes, Rosemary finds herself hemmed in by evil on every side - is there anyone she can trust? is there anyway she can protect her unborn child?

It's been forty one years since this film was released, and apart from outdated music choices, our fashion faux-paux returning to haunt us and an ill-chosen horrific 'mask', it still packs a scary punch. Director Roman Polanski creates an uneasy landscape of 'friendly' characters that keep you guessing until the end. Mia Farrow and John Cassavetes are excellent, performances that give testament to their popularity and success at the time. (An interesting side note - Mia Farrow's chic, short haircut was maintained on set by Vidal Sassoon.) Ruth Gordon gives an Oscar winning performance as the 'helpful' neighbour Minnie ...

Fans of great film making should definitely check this title out and learn how a great director (with the help of a stellar cast) creates a lasting phenomenon ... it frightened the pants off of me!
