Sixteen Candles

Starring: Anthony Michael Hall, Molly Ringwald
Director: John Hughes

Universal Studios Home Video | September 16, 2008 | DVD

How could Samantha's life get any worse? Her annoyingly beautiful sister's going to marry a sleazy hunk, both sets of grandparents are spending the weekend in her home, and the boy of her dreams doesn't know her from Adam. But yes -- things can go downhill even from there, because Samantha's preoccupied parents have managed to forget her birthday. Still... maybe something will come along to save the day... From the mad morning bus ride to school, to the outrage of gym class, to the tragedy of not receiving an invitation to the big dance, "Sixteen Candles" charmingly and realistically captures the world of a typical angst-ridden suburban teen.

Notes

Film was originally rated R by the MPAA, but received a PG on appeal. A young Joan Cusack plays a high school student with a large retainer and a younger John Cusack plays a geek friend of Ted. John Hughes made his directing debut with "Sixteen Candles."

Description

Shermer, Illinois teen Samantha Baker's always dreamed her sixteenth birthday would involve a "big party...with a band and tons of people...and a pink Trans Am with a bow around it," but instead she gets bupkes--her whole family forgets amidst the confusion of her self-absorbed sister's wedding! Enter Ted, The Geek, a lovestruck zero who may be the unwitting link between shy Sam and to-die-for Jake Ryan, the guy of her dreams. "Teenpix" writer-producer Hughes' finest hour, richly comic and uncynically true to the overly dramatic nature of the pangs of first love. Also a treasure trove of "Brat Pack" actors, with Jami Gertz and Joan and John Cusack supporting the main cast.
