Steven Soderbergh was the most unlikely of directors to tap into the desires of popular culture, but when Sex, Lies and Videotape was released in 1989, not only did it win the Palm D'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, but it also won the acclaim of critics the world over. It tells the story of a couple ruined by infidelity. Ann finds out her husband John is sleeping with her sister Cynthia. In response, she turns to, of all things, the video camera of John's old impotent friend Graham. While Ann is detailing and eulogizing her sex life, Graham is on the other side, enjoying his last remaining physical pleasure: sexual confessions. Sharp, divergent and ultimately innovative, this film is not your ordinary stroll through relationships.

Peter Andrews is a pseudonym for director Steven Soderbergh as a cinematographer, since the Writers Guild wouldn't let give him permission to use the credit "directed and photographed by Steven Soderbergh." The alias is taken from his father's first two names.

 

Several of Elmore Leonard's books have seen recent adaptations to the big screen, but none are as faithful to his brilliant characterizations as Out of Sight. This movie is a treasure-trove of witty, ultra-cool dialogue and hip character interplay. Marvellously directed by Steven Soderbergh, the film plays around the attraction between Jack Foley (George Clooney), a sly but fairly trouble prone bank robber and Karen Sisco, the scorchingly beautiful and ambitious FBI agent known for her dalliances with bank robbers. Clooney and Jennifer Lopez burn up the screen with two of the hottest performances seen in an action film in quite some time. Unforgettable dialogue, several truly great performances and an intelligent flashback-style chronology make this movie a pleasure to watch. If you're into films that pack as much intelligence as they do entertainment value, then this one belongs in your library.
