      Saving Private Ryan

      By Tom Hanks

      DreamWorks Home Video | April 18, 2006 | DVD
Steven Spielberg instantaneously redefined the standards of excellence and realism in war films with Saving Private Ryan. The film tells a story of perseverance and pain set against the backdrop of brutality and inhumanity that was the Second World War. Following D-Day, Tom Hanks leads a group of soldiers on a recovery mission to find a missing private caught behind enemy lines. The journey goes well beyond a simple mission however, and by film's end, viewers will be filled with dozens of conflicting feelings about the idea and reality of war. This special DVD edition features exclusive footage, not to mention an interview with Spielberg.

      Schindler's List

      By Liam Neeson

      Universal Studios | February 12, 2008 | DVD
      From the Studio:

Schindler's List, a Steven Spielberg film, is a cinematic masterpiece that has become one of the most honored films of all time. Winner of seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, it also won every major Best Picture award and an exceptional number of additional honors. Among them were seven British Academy Awards; the Best Picture Awards from the New York Film Critics Circle, the National Society of Film Critics, the National Board of Review, the Producers Guild, the Los Angeles Film Critics, the Chicago, Boston and Dallas Film Critics; a Christopher Award; and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association Golden Globe Awards. Steven Spielberg was further honored with the Directors Guild of America Award.

The film presents the indelible true story of the enigmatic Oskar Schindler, a member of the Nazi party, womanizer, and war profiteer who saved the lives of more than 1,100 Jews during the Holocaust. It is the triumph of one man who made a difference, and the drama of those who survived one of the darkest chapters in human history because of what he did.

      Always

      By Steven Spielberg

Universal Studios Home Video | October 31, 2006 | DVD
This wonderful adaptation of the 1943 classic A Guy Named Joe stars Richard Dreyfuss as a devil-may-care forest-fighting pilot, John Goodman as his equally death-defying but slightly goofier friend and Holly Hunter as Dreyfuss` air-traffic controller girlfriend. Pete (Dreyfuss) saves his best-friend Al (Goodman) in a spectacular firefight, but in so doing Pete loses his own life. He returns to Earth as a ghostly spirit and begins to train an up-and-coming young pilot (Brad Johnson) to follow in his footsteps. When the young ace begins to fall for Pete`s ex-girlfriend - and she for him - Pete must struggle with his feelings of sadness and the realization that she must move on. Audrey Hepburn puts in her last performance as Pete`s heavenly guide Hap. Always is a wonderfully touching film that boasts strong performances and dazzling effects. This DVD version comes in widescreen format and includes production notes, theatrical trailers and a host of other goodies.

      Minority Report

      By Tom Cruise

      Dreamworks | August 23, 2005 | DVD
Far more resonant -- and creepy -- than a sci-fi story set in a far-distant time, Steven Spielberg's Minority Report bumps our imaginations a mere half-century or so forward to 2054. In Washington D.C., troubled cop John Anderton (Tom Cruise) immerses himself in his work in the innovative and astonishingly effective Precrime unit, which uses "precogs" -- a trio of pale savants brain-damaged by drug-addicted mothers -- who can see murders before they happen. This is a system Anderton could have used several years before when his young son was snatched from a public pool, a tragedy that destroyed his marriage and drove him to seek solace in neuroin, the near-future's drug of choice.

Anderton's fierce loyalty to the Precrime program takes on a sordid twist when he himself is tagged as a future murderer, his name etched into a wooden ball by a pleasingly Rube Goldbergish device amid the high-tech world of mid-21-century policing, with its jet-packs, "sick sticks" and menacing "halos" -- a chilling sort of handcuffs for the mind. Indeed, it is in the high-tech details and "incidental" special effects that the film really makes an impact: a cereal box that plays its jingle when it is picked up; interactive, real-time newspapers with headlines that show breaking news; highways that do the driving, both in the horizontal and vertical planes; and omnipresent billboards that scan people's retinas so as to address them by name with their pitches -- the Gap has never been quite that creepy. Solid performances by Cruise, Colin Farrell (in a greasy haircut and bad moustache as the ambitious Fed after Anderton's job) and Samantha Morton (as the waifish precog Agatha) would have pleased Philip K. Dick, whose eponymous short story inspired this top-grade sci-fi thriller.

    1. Catch Me If You Can (Ff)

      Average rating: 4/5

Catch Me If You Can (Ff)

      By Leonardo Di Caprio

      Dreamworks | February 14, 2006 | DVD
Leonardo DiCaprio stars as Frank Abagnale Jr., social engineer and con boy extraordinaire. Set in the glorious '60s (which, oddly, look much like the stylish '50s) and based on his bestselling memoir, 17-year-old Frankie Abagnale, Jr. manages to wink, weasel, defraud and bilk $2.5 million from Corporate America. But it's okay -- he's doing it all for love. Well, love and "fine threads, luxurious lodgings, and fantastic foxes." Stricken by the announcement of his parents' divorce, Frankie (Leonardo DiCaprio) believes he can bring about a reconciliation if he can come up with enough moolah for the family to return to its charmed lifestyle. And so begins his psychological escape and ingenious transformations (teacher, airline pilot, Secret Service Agent, doctor, lawyer) on the road to counterfeit cheque glory. Though a little long in the tooth to play a teenager, DiCaprio manages to strike the delicate and plausible balance between naive boy ("This is by far the best date I've ever been on") and suave charmer ("I'd like to cash this cheque here and then I'd like to take you out for a steak dinner"). Flanked by Tom Hanks as Carl Hanratty, the earnest FBI Agent pursuing him, and the sublime-yet-spooky Christopher Walken (the emotional anchor of the film who also cuts a mean rug) as Frank Abagnale, Sr., there's no lack of star wattage or acting talent on the roster. Also noteworthy are cameos by Martin Sheen, Jennifer Garner and James Brolin (hey, there is life after Hotel !). Confessions of an Adolescent Con Artist -- Spielberg positions this firmly in good ol' fashioned hoodwinking territory (more The Sting than The Grifters ) with our sympathies clearly on Frankie's side. However, if we must criticize, Catch Me If You Can moves from one caper to the next without enough attention to character (no, changing from pilot's blues to doctor's cost to lawyer's duds doesn't count) or narrative development. That said, it's tough to complain when the acting is stellar, the cons so bold and most importantly, it's all so much fun.

      Jurassic Park

      By Jeff Goldblum

      Universal Home Video | March 11, 2008 | DVD
Steven Spielberg made movie magic - and history - with this groundbreaking tour-de-force of special effects, thrills, chills and fun. Jurassic Park is the story of a multi-billionaire (Richard Attenborough) who takes advantage of state-of-the-art cloning technology to revive the ancient breed of lizards known as dinosaurs. His capital idea is to turn the slobbering, generally quite un-cuddly beasts into the greatest theme park on Earth and he's hired Paleontologists Alan Grant (Sam Neill) and Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern) to serve as advisors on dino-behaviour, as well as quirky chaos mathematician Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum) just to keep things interesting. But the ravages of nature and internal sabotage send the island's security system haywire… and now everyone stands toe to toe with their greatest nightmare: a slew of rampaging, giant carnivorous beasties with big appetites for destruction. The computer-generated special effects are truly revolutionary and utterly mind-blowing in this white-knuckle thriller of an adventure film.

Steven Spielberg directed this powerful film depicting the real-life events that followed the 1839 insurrection aboard the slave ship Amistad.
