The Replacements

Starring: Keanu Reeves, Brooke Langton, Orlando Jones, Gene Hackman
Director: Howard Deutch

Warner Home Video | January 8, 2008 | DVD

There's trouble a-brewin' on the grid-iron as a professional football players' strike threatens the season in this winning and incredibly funny flick. Frantic, the Washington Sentinels owners employ maverick coach Jimmy McGinty (Gene Hackman) to put together a play-able team. Since there are no real players available, the new Sentinals are an odd-ball bunch of misfits - including a Welsh soccer player, a sumo wrestler, a few pro body guards… and the new team leader Shane Falco (Keanu Reeves), a once-promising player haunted by one profoundly disastrous championship game. As the team rallies together to get even a semblance of some plays working, the gang must endure the ever-growing hostilities from the striking pros, racially motivated in-fighting, and a bar-brawl of epic proportions that leads to jail time… and the most hilarious in-cell dance number that you have to see to believe. Even if sports movies aren't your thing, do yourself a favour and pick up The Replacements, a winning addition to the canon that includes such time-honoured masterpieces as The Longest Yard and Semi-Tough.

Like all good sports movies, this one is about the underdogs.

The professional football players have refused to even set foot on a field until they get a raise. Unwilling to let a season go by without making a dime, the teams owners hire replacement players to play out the season just so they won't have to refund season tickets. Enter one of the best football casts ever assembled! Keanu Reeves stars as a washed up quarterback who can still play but is so shamed and ridiculed that he doesn't enjoy the game anymore. Gene Hackman is the coach responsible for getting this rag-tag team up and running and making them come together as a team (expect a few good training montages and a very clever and fun jail room sing a long and dance by the football players). There is also this cute cheerleader who catches Shane's (Reeves) eye...

Tons of laughs and action. Must-see!

This movie is simply fantastic! Its great! The characters are portrayed by fantastic acting (especially Keanu Reeves), and the script brings laughs the entire film.

The football is played out well, and the plot is thick for a sports comedy.

James Emms gives this movie two thumbs and a finger up!
