Synopsis:
The whales are listening.
In a small New Zealand coastal village, Maori claim descent from a single ancestor, Paikea, the Whale Rider, who escaped death when his canoe capsized by riding to shore on the back of a whale. In every generation for more than 1000 years, Whangara chiefs -- always the first-born, always male -- have been considered Paikea's direct descendants. When the chain is broken, a search begins to find their future leader.
