at first I thought I wouldn't enjoy this

Being a purist, at first I thought I wouldn't enjoy this extremely stylized version of the classic story. But Baz Luhrmann wins again in this 2nd installation to the Red Curtain Trilogy. This film works because of the coherence of it's treatment. The things they've done here work across the board, without sacrificing any of Shakespeare's intended passion and vibrancy. All of the original language is kept, and the setting is a mix of retro and urban. I bought the soundtrack when this film came out and I've always enjoyed that, too. DiCaprio and Danes work very well together onscreen, and the minor roles of the parents and kinsmen are very well played. Two actors that stand out to me are Mercutio and The Nurse. Each brings their own style.

This film is a testament to the idea that Shakespeare is truly universal. You can set it anywhere at any time, and it still rings true. The Bard has proven time and time again to be the greatest playwright of all time!

This movie is great. I have been familiar with Shakespeare's famous play since I was very little, and this is the perfect rendition. In english class we watched the older version and I actually remember falling asleep. With this version it keeps the audience entertained and excited. Plus it has a cutie actor in it ;)
