It's a "wonderfully welcoming work of art that's as funny and entertaining as it is brilliant, beautiful, and deep" (Joe Morgenstern, Wall Street Journal). SPIRITED AWAY is a wondrous fantasy about a young girl, Chihiro, trapped in a strange new world of spirits. When her parents undergo a mysterious transformation, she must call upon the courage she never knew she had to free herself and return her family to the outside world. An unforgettable story brimming with creativity, SPIRITED AWAY will take you on a journey beyond your imagination. "To enter the world of Hayao Miyazaki is to experience a kind of lighthearted enchantment that is unique to the world of animation" (Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times). It's a fantastic tale the whole family will want to experience over and over again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Spirited Away Spirited Away is an animated film with an excellent storyline. It is about a ten year old girl named Chihiro who moves in the suburbs and gets stuck in a spirit world while trying to save the people she loves. With stunning visuals, the film draws the viewer in this magical world and invites them to follow Chihiro on her journey. The characters in the film bring a wide range of personalities to the story. For example, the antagonist, a witch character, is first shown as kind and gentle, but then becomes progressively meaner. This is a sharp contrast to Chihiro, a shy and scared little girl, who develops courage that she never knew she had. It is a fantasy world and looks like a story that young children would tell you. The meaningful plot and carefully crafted animation makes this a movie that may be enjoyed by audiences of all ages.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A wonderful movie full of childlike wonder A favorite of my husband, this movie was introduced to me only in my thirties, and I have to say, I sat down with some trepidation. But I needn't have worried, as this is one of the most magical and wonderful stories I've ever watched. At its core, this is a movie about a young girl who crosses into a spiritual world in order to save her parents, and the choices and allies she has to make to do so. As an allegory, there's a real "growing up" metaphor going on, and it's done deftly and wonderfully. Visually, it's stunning, and the narrative itself is just lovely. It's like listening and watching a child's imagination tell you a tale.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hayao myazaki's masterpiece Spirited Away" [2001] : Hayao myazaki's masterpiece, the story of Chihiro, 10-year-old girl moving to the suburbs, who wanders into a mysterious town and finds a world of spirits ruled over by the mysterious Yubaba. A beautifully imaginative film depicting a rich and lush fantasy world like you've never seen before! I've watched this with with my Kindergarten class or 5 year old Japanese students and they absolutely loved it, one of them named Mimiko even has the full colour "Spirited Away Picture Book"... definitely a timeless classic filled with creatively imaginative characters! The most popular Japanese film in the history of Japanese cinema began in a very modest fashion. \Legendary animator Hayao Miyazaki met the daughter of a friend, a bored little girl who made an instant impression on him and he decided to make a movie for young girls. as it turned out his audience was much larger than he'd ever expected! An adventure story where the heroine is thrown into a place where good and bad dwell side by side, where she learns about friendship and devotion, experiencing the world and learning to survive through crisis, avoiding danger and getting back to her ordinary world after acquiring the ability to survive under some of the most dire circumstances, Composer Joe Hisaishi has compose an outstanding achievement in his soundtrack to the film, which won the prestigious 2003 ANNIE award! Enter the exciting world of hayao miyazaki and experience his one of a kind lighthearted enchantment that is unique to the wonderful world of Animation! If you have any sort of imagination at all, this is for you! If you love this film, other recommendations are : 1/ "CASTLE IN THE SKY" 2/ "PRINCESS MONONOKE" 3/ "KIKI'S DELIVERY SERVICE" "Spirited Away" is a little slow in parts, but patience bears fruit in the end, so stick with it and let the wonderfully imaginative story envelope you, completely losing yourself in this exciting fantasy world of brilliant and bizarre characters! A very rewarding repeatedly viewed film with depth! [Score : 100/100]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredible! Spirited Away, directed by the famous Hayao Miyazaki, is an incredible film that people of all ages will enjoy. There are vivid and beautiful colours, that make it pleasant to view. The storyline is incredible; something that I would never have been able to imagine. Its very entertaining, with unique characters, each of which have their own different personality. While a family of three (Chihiro, and parents) is on there way to their new house, the family gets lost. They come across what looks like an abandoned theme park, however, it is actually a place for the spirits, and where humans are not welcome. The parents start to eat the freshly cooked food for the spirits that was left at the abandoned place, and as a punishment, they both were turned into pigs. What is the secret behind that place? Will Chihiro be able to find a way to turn her parents back into normal humans? Watching Spirited Away the second time was just as exciting as the first time. I highly recommend everyone to watch this incredible anime movie. If you enjoyed Spirited Away, then I recommend that you watch other movies that are directed by Hayao Miyazaki: Howls Moving Castle, Kikis Delivery Service, and My Neighbour Totoro.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A dream retold There is more to this masterpiece than just a captivating tale and superior art. Notice that Chapter 11 adds nothing to the story and not much happens in it. In fact, you could cut it off with no apparent loss. Yet, it is the chapter I watch over and over again, every time asking myself new questions. Who is that little girl standing on a railway platform, all alone, watching the train come and go, and surrounded by broad flooded fields? What is the meaning of those neon signs attached to non-existent buildings? A train conductor with no face shreds a 40-year old ticket. Isn’t this Miyazaki’s trip to a yesteryear world?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Miyazaki at his best!!! This was the first Miyazaki film that I ever saw and it got me hooked. Many people may think that all animation is made up of block shading and cheesy storylines, but Miyazaki goes above and beyond these stereotypes. The animation itself could make up an entire art gallery, and the story is captivating and engaging. Perhaps the most beautiful part of this film is when Chihiro, the main character, bursts into tears. Instead of crying little lines like Sailor Moon, Chihiro bubbles over tears that are intricate with detail, and look just like the real thing. The word 'detail' sums up this film. It uses skill in comedy, drama, and reality to draw a viewer in. It truely is a masterpiece, and there is no question that it is a winner of the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. For other awesome Miyazaki experiences, look for "Naussica of the Valley of the Wind", and "Castle in the Sky" for starters, as all Miyazaki films are fantastic.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Masterpiece! This film must be watch with an open mind. It is filled with metaphores of experiences in Hayao Miyazaki's life. From the main charater (Chichiro or Sen) inspired by the daugther of one of his friend to a river cleaning transformed into a river spirit taking a visit to the bath house. You see the growth of a little bit spoiled little girl to an understanding human being. As for the animation, the details are amazing. It shows the real capacities of the medium. Worth every penny and every second to watch!
