Rated 5 out of 5 by from Animal Laws This book touched my heart as I am an animal lover. My friend recomended this book to me and I'm glad she did. It doesn't matter if you've never really liked to read because I'd say that anyone should read it. The part that was really unfair was that back in those days animals were like property and you could do whatever you wanted to them. I'm glad that the law has put a stop to that.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful Joe This book is about a sweet tempered dog who is beaten by his master. He is then rescued and ends up in a nice family. He has many adventures with his new owner Miss Laura. This book is the equivalent of Black Beauty from a dogs point of view.

About the Author

Margaret Marshall Saunders was born Nova Scotia in 1861, and was inspired to write Beautiful Joe while she was visiting her brother in Meaford, Ontario. She heard about the story of a dog that was rescued from a brutal owner and proceeded to write a fictionalized biography of the dog, entering it into a literary contest sponsored by the American Humane Education Society. When the book was first published, it was the first Canadian book to sell over a million copies, and by the late 1930s had sold over seven million copies worldwide. In 1934, Saunders was made a Commander of the British Empire, and together with fellow Canadian author, Lucy Maud Montgomery, she also co-founded the Maritime branch of the Canadian Women's Press Club. Saunders went on to write more than twenty other stories and died in 1947 in Toronto.
