But her family''s past is wrapped in secrets and shrouded in darkness-and a demon shapeshifter has marked Denise as prey. Now her survival depends on an immortal who lusts for a taste of her.

He is Spade, a powerful, mysterious vampire who has walked the earth for centuries and is now duty-bound to protect this endangered, alluring human-even if it means destroying his own kind. Denise may arouse his deepest hungers, but Spade knows he must fight his urge to have her as they face the nightmare together . . .

Because once the first crimson drop falls, they will both be lost.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not Cat and Bones but still very good We finally get a chance to see more into the life of Bones best friend Spade, and Denise, Cat’s best friend. I loved reading about Spade. I quite enjoyed this book. This instalment finds Denise and her family being threatened by a Demon all because of a bad decision made by one of her relatives many years ago. Not being able to contact Cat or Bones Denise calls on Spade. Spade also not wanting to interrupt the peace Bones and Cat are finally enjoying steps up to help. Spade is wonderful, classy and old fashion. He is the knight in shining armour type of guy. Denise is a simple human not wanting to be a part of the paranormal world in any way after losing her husband to it in a very gruesome manor. Spade tries to help Denise find her relative Nathaniel who made a promise to a Demon and then reneged after realizing what a mistake that was. Spade tries to protect Denise from the Demon Raum who has forced her to find Nathaniel or forever carry the brands of a Demon and become a shape shifting Demon herself. There is plenty of action to keep you occupied in this series and although it had a different feel to it then the Cat and Bones portions of the Night Huntress Series it’s still quite good. We also get to add a new being into the mix for future Cat and Bones books. And for anyone hoping to get their Cat and Bones fix from this book they certainly make an appearance albeit a short one. So not necessarily as good as Cat and Bones but still a good read.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good, but not Bones and Cat I did enjoy this book enough, but it is really hard not to compare it to cat and Bones. One thing that kind of got on my nerves is how whiney Denise was at times. i am eager to see what Mancheres has in store for us in her next book :)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fast Paced and Full of Action I bought this book as soon as it came out in February 2010 but shelved it until May 2010. Because I had planned to bring in on vacation with me on May 14th. I decided to start it on May 1st thinking there was no way I'd finish before I left for my trip...boy was I wrong. I couldn't put it down. Jeaniene Frost's books tantalize the senses and are chalk full of delectable moments of passion between a heroine you want to cheer for and a deadly hero you wish was real.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Spade Could Give Bones A Run For His Money! Unlike the rest of the books in the series, this book was not about Cat or her vampire husband Bones. This was Spade’s story. Spade is the best friend of Bones who has had a tough life. While Cat and Bones are on a well deserved vacation, Spade gets a frantic call from Cat’s best friend Denise. Apparently a long time ago one of her relatives made a deal with a demon. Well that deal comes with a price. Now because certain debts were not paid the demon has come to Denise and forces her to help him. If she doesn’t help find her deal making relative then the rest of her family will pay the price. Like the rest of the books written by Frost, this was another winner. It was nice to see who Spade really was and to see to damaged hearts coming together to heal.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic! Loved this latest installment of the Cat and Bones series by Jeanine Frost, although admittedly Cat and Bones show up for maybe a chapter or two. This story largely focuses on Cat's best friend, Denise and her life after she leaves the main circle of characters in the series. Nothing overtly spectacular about this story. I enjoy Denise as a character, and I believe her story was well written. Demons vs vampires people! What's not to love? And of course a damsel in distress who finds her knight in shining armor in the end. What I enjoy most though is the concept that Jeanine Frost is going for. Whereas most authors introduce characters to carry on the series, or pick on popular character to create a new spin off series, Jeanine is not doing that. Instead she is taking a few characters and creating one story for them. So instead of having a multitude of spin offs or a series that might carry on past the point of interest, Jeanine is taking advantage of the best of both words. Giving us a little more info on the characters we enjoy, and not killing us or herself with spin offs. Brilliance.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Loved it!!! Denise is still in morning over her husband's death when a secret from her families past has left her marked by a Demon shape shifter. If she doesn't find what the Demon is looking for she will slowly turn into a monster herself. Left with no alternatives, she asks for the help of a Vampire acquaintance, Spade. Spade is a powerful vampire who has no use for humans except to fulfill his needs. Out of a sense of obligation he agrees to help her. As the two spend more time together, Spade feelings towards Denise become lustful and possessive, while Denise is torn between fearing and falling for her charming rescuer. First Drop Of Crimson is Jeaniene Frost's first spin off novel in the Night Huntress series and it surpassed my expectations. The heat between Denise and Spade lives up to the standard set by Frost's previous novel with sex, romance, and a suspenseful plot. Loved it and can't wait for the next in the series

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Addicting! Awesome spin-off novel to the Night Huntress series! Denise is in trouble. A demon is gunning after her family since her ancestor made a deal with him for power but did not repay him in return. Now with Cat and Bones gone she can only turn to one person, Spade. Spade felt an immediate connection to Denise at Cat’s party but once finding out she was married he moved on. Now with Denise alone, Spade is planning to win over her heart while protecting her from a demon until they can find her relative to return him to the demon for payment. This book is an excellent filler to the series and keeps you occupied until the next Night Huntress book that comes out featuring Cat and Bones.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One Drop is all it Takes. First drop of crimson is the first book in a spinoff series by jeaniene frost. These are characters taken from the nighthuntress series but they definetely hold there own in this first book. Denise MacGregor knows very well what lurks in the shadows after dusk, after all her best friend cat is a half vampire and her husband bones aka yummy god is a full vampire. Denise was also married to a vampire named randy who was killed tragically a year before. What denise doesn't know is that there is a demon shapeshifter around and his eyes are set on her, but not in the gooey way. Denise finds out that one of her antcestors holds a dark secret, one that will and has cost her family. Nathanial, the decendant made a deal with the demon raum for his immortality in exchange for his services, except nathanial never fulfilled his end of the deal, so now it's up to denise to either find nathanial and bring him to raum or suffer a horriable fate. Denise doesn't want to bother cat and bones because she knows that they will drop everything and fight to the death for her, but after the last battle they need their peace and time alone. So who does she call? Spade, the bad boy vampire who is bones best friend. Denise explains to spade what's going on and he agrees to help, but when he arrives at her home ,smells demon and finds her in a compromising position things change and sparks start to fly. During the hunt for nathanial, cat and bones become involved as well as some other characters we know and love/hate? and together they fight the vampires and demon to rescue nate and restore denises familys safety. I'm trying not to put any spoilers in here so this might not make too much sense but please it you are a fan of cat and bones and frost's writting style then I urge you to read this book. It's a comedy, romance and hot passion plus a great story, what more could you ask for all you paranormal fans??? 2010-022

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Frost does it again! As expected, I couldn't put this books down. Denise and Spade are the perfect couple. Being a spin off book from the Night Huntress series, new readers don't need to have read her previous four books. I'll admit, a little background did help nearing the end of the book. Sexy, determined vampire agrees to assist a broken and semi-tortured heroine even though he knows the consequences. What more could you ask for in a book? Great Read. Sucks you in like a high powered vacuum!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved it! Another great book by Jeaniene! Denise is a human, friends with Cat who is a half-vampire, and has seen to much of the supernatural world, and has lost her husband to it. She just wants to live a normal life, but when family start dieing and she witness' the attacker kill another one of her relatives, she calls Spade to help her. When the attacker shows up at her door, she learns that he is a demon and she can help him locate a distant relative that summoned this demon and then the killing will stop, but what price will Denise have to pay. Spade and Denise start their search and along the way, they find that they desire each other, her blood is the famous vampire drug, and that theirs pasts are really not so different from each others. Great story, can't wait for the next book!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not on par with the Cat/Bones series I was really looking forward to this book. When authors I really like (as is the case for J. Frost) write books about characters from the main series, this is usually makes me happy. But I didn't really care for this book. The third star is pretty much showing my support for Frost previous work and (although another reviewer didn't think so) a cover I found strangely compelling. Here's the problem for me in a nutshell: I don't like Denise. She's a total sack of wet cement for me. I get that she's got issues and I don't blame her for having them, but what on earth does Spade see in her? I get why Cat loves Bones and vice versa. But I didn't feel an iota of chemistry between these two. There was more heat between Denise and Ian, for pete's sake. Anyway, looking forward to the next book - hoping it's just a blip.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Interim Cat / Bones Fix I have had Cat / Bones DT’s since I finished the series some months ago; FDOC is a great quick fix to stave off the need until the next offering from Frost hits the market. The relationship of Spade & Denise does not have the same addictive quality of Cat & Bones, that being said Spade was one of my favorite characters from the Night Huntress series & I am happy to have his story in print. Denise was not really a dynamic character for me in the series & she only somewhat improves her station in this offering with some powers imparted to her via the demon brands. Kudos to her for having used her worst possible fears in life to actually morph into her best impression of ‘The Grave’ in order to combat / defeat the demon in the end. The artistry of the cover for FDOC also leaves something to be desired & I am not sure I have ever commented on a cover before but there is a first time for everything. I will await anxiously Mancheres tale in the next spinoff novel but more so the return of Cat & Bones!!!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Frost heats it up In this fifth installment of Frost's huntress series the readers take a detour into the romantic entanglement of spade and denise. After the mysterious death of her cousin, Denise enlists Spade's help in seeking out an ancestor, who has unfinished business with a powerful and vengeful demon. Along the way the two's feelings grow deeper and more passionate but is Denise willing to give her humanity to spend eternity with the one she loves. Like all of Frost's other works this one was fast paced and action packed and while I do prefer Cat's narration it was nice to see her world from different perspectives. We get to see most of the regular cast in this installment and suprisingly emotional growth with Ian (I can't wait to see who Frost will pair him with). Although I miss the Cat and Bones action in and out of the bedroom A Drop of Crimson is not to be missed!!! Happy reading!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Ms. Frost does it again. Yes ladies and gentlemen the first spin off book to the Night Huntress series has been realeased and it was AMAZING. I feel like if you have read the Night Huntress series you are required to read this, it would be against the rules if you didn't. So anyway I thought the book was great, I was a little worried that I would miss Cat and Bones Badley but Spade and Denise hold a great story. The whole book was very interesting, funny and intriguing. As a side note I have to mention that Ian was hilariouse in this book alot of his lines had me laughing out loud. Overall the book was great and if your a fan of the Night Huntress series than this is a must read, and if you haven't read the Night Huntress series WHATS WRONG WITH YOU hop to it. Can't wait till the next in the "spin off" series and original.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Heated & Fast Paced First Drop of Crimson (the first book in the Night Huntress spin off series) focuses on Denise, Cat’s best-friend that we’ve only had small glimpses of in past novels. Denise has pulled herself away from all contact with vampires, even pulling away from Cat, after loosing her husband Randy in the last vampire war. Suddenly members of Denise’s family start dying of heart attacks, when Denise witnesses a family members last moments she realizes it’s not heart attacks that are killing them off, its a demon. One of her distant relatives reneged on a deal with a demon and he’s out to get her whole family. She must find this relative or risk loosing every single family member left and worse, he’s marked her. Denise doesn’t want to get Cat or Bone’s involved and all she has left is asking Spade for help. Spade realizes, it’s going to be a lot harder than he expected when he tastes that first drop of crimson. Readers of the Night Huntress series will not be disappointed with First Drop of Crimson, Ms. Frost keeps true to the series but adds new life! This book was action packed from beginning to the very end, with all sorts of twists and turns. Denise is still having panic attacks around vampires due to the vampire war, so you feel her struggle to get past it and grow stronger. There is appearances by old characters like Ian, Bones & Cat among others. So even if there isn’t a Cat & Bones book until 2011, you do get some time with them in First Drop. If you haven’t ever read a Jeaniene Frost book, you can pick this one up without reading the previous novels. There’s just enough back story that you won’t feel lost if you start from First Drop and you’ll quickly pick up the storyline. Fans of “Chapter 32″ from Jeaniene Frost’s novel One Foot In The Grave, will get a big laugh out of…Chapter 23. Seriously, chapter 23. I giggled when I saw what chapter I was reading. Well done Ms. Frost, even if it wasn’t intentional! The chemistry between Spade and Denise was intense, and let me tell you…hot hot hot! Cat & Bones have some competition! Go out and grab a copy on February 9th, trust me. You won’t be able to put it down!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Oh it is good! Denise lost her husband in a vampire war and has vowed to never to be involved with vamps or the likes again. Fate has other plans. One of Denise’s relative’s made a deal with a demon and reneged on that deal. The demon wants revenge and starts killing off Denise’s family. When the demon gets to Denise they strike a “deal”. Denise tracks down the relative and returns him to the demon. To help her and track her, the demon brads Denise and gives her strength and speed. Denise has no idea where to start. She knows that she needs help and looks to the one vampire that she thinks will not care, but still help. Spade. Spade has no love for humans. Reluctantly Spade agrees to help. The two makes plans to visit Spades line and look for the relative in question. The person is no there, but Spade finds that he is slowly being drawn to Denise try as he might not too. Denise, only widowed a year, fights the same compulsion. Denise and Spade visit Ian’s line, and still no relative. They do end up with a lead the takes them to Vegas. They learn that Denise’s relative and Denise are a rare source of a powerful drug for vampires. To get the source will be very dangerous for all those involved. They learn that Nathanial has being held captive by Web, a very dangerous master vampire willing to do anything to protect his source. With the help of some friends (Cat and Bones) they are able to get Nathaniel out. Once out Web contacts them to say that he has the dagger that can kill the demon. Web wants to trade Denise for the dagger. The team meet Web in a battle that will leave only one side standing. This is the first book in Frost’s spin-off series where we will get to meet the secondary characters from the Night Huntress series. This was a great start. Cat and Bones are so good that I was worried that this would not be up to that standard. It was great. I sat down and read it in an afternoon. I liked that the storey kept me guessing the till the end. I have to say that I still think this is one of the worst covers ever. If I had not read Frost before I would never have picked up this book. If you like Cat and Bones you will enjoy this.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from First Drop of Crimson First Drop of Crimson is the first book in the Night Huntress series. The book is set in the same world of the Night Huntress books (Cat and Bones). This book follows Spade and Denise. Spade is a vampire and Bones' best friend who dislikes humans. Denise is Cat's best friend whose husband was killed by the supernatural. Denise doesn't want to have anything to do with vampires or any supernatural things since Randy died. Last time Denise seen Spade he killed a human in front of her because Denise was about to be raped. Denise has been suffering with Post Traumatic Stress disorder since Randy's death a year ago. Although she misses her best friend Cat, she doesn't want to be involved in her world. Denise has been going to a lot of funerals lately, many family members have been dying from sudden heart attacks. While talking to her cousin Paul who doesn't believe that all the deaths were natural, she sees Paul get his life choked from him by a mysterious man who then shapes shifts. The mysterious man tells Denise he will kill her unless he finds a distant relative and bring him back to him. She needs to find that man to save her life and the lives of her other relatives. Denise attempts to call Cat and Bones but cannot get a hold of them. She calls Spade to get their number but Spade doesn't want to her to call them unless it's true. Spade goes out to investigate and realizes Denise is in even worse danger than she might believe; the mysterious man is a demon. Because of everything Cat and Bones have been through, Spade decides to help Denise and not tell Cat and Bones anything. He wants them to have a break from all the danger they have been under that last few years. While working together Spade tries to struggle with a growing attraction to her while trying to keep her alive. I've been really excited to read this book since I know there will be no Cat and Bones books until 2011. In the Night Huntress books I always loved the secondary characters just as much as the primary ones. I have always like Spade's character even though he and Cat have always had tension. In this book we get a bigger picture of his background, we see his past and why he always hated humans so much. Denise as a character was always okay for me. I was sad when her husband died but I wasn't so much interested in her. This book changed that. She is a great character and heroine. I loved the relationship she and Spade have and how they got there. This book was really good but to me was missing some of the “magic” and humour from the Cat and Bones books. I did have a good romantic story with lots of action. I’m very excited for the next book in the night Huntress series which will feature Mencheres. This was a really good spin-off book to tie me over. I also loved that my beloved characters in the Night Huntress series (Cat, Bones and Mencheres) make appearances.

Editorial Reviews

"A can''t put down masterpiece that''s sexy-hot and a thrill-ride on every page. I''m officially addicted to the series. Marry me Bones!" (Gena Showalter, New York Times bestselling author)
