Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not my favourite dog book, but not bad! With three dogs in my house, and the attempted breeding of one of them, it’s no wonder that I love dogs. I love how they get so excited to see me when I’m gone for only a few minutes, or how they cuddle like life-size hot water bottles with me on a cold day. I saw life-size because their sizes range from 40-80 pounds. They’re not small dogs, but regardless of their size, I’ve loved them all since day one. I first saw the movie for Marley & Me and really enjoyed it. When I saw the book at a library sale, I knew I should snatch it up because if it was anything like the movie, it was bound to be awesome. The movie and the book are both quite similar. It’s the story of a couple just having gotten married and getting a dog. Naturally, they fall for looks rather than researching their option and end up with Marley. According to the movie, Marley is an absolute terror, but he really doesn’t come across as one in the book. At least not so much. I hate to compare the two, but I really liked how the movie was based on newspaper articles written by Grogan, but that really doesn’t happen in the book. In fact, the book comes across just as I said earlier, a couple who poorly researches a dog, gets one based on looks alone and has no idea what they got themselves into. Being a dog owner, I know what it takes to yield a good dog. In fact, my husband and I researched our first dog so much and had to wait a year to get her because we wanted one from a specific breeder because they seemed like the best. They were wonderful and we met the mother and the father of the litter, got to know them before the litter was even born. After spending that long with the breed, we were more than certain when our litter was up. I wasn’t the biggest fan of the novel, suffice to say. We spent time training all of our dogs and while they’re not perfect, they are excellent listeners when it counts. Sure, they still jump on people when they’re really excited (usually just family, and it’s only one dog who does it), but they don’t jump onto the counter, they don’t make a lot of noise, they don’t make huge messes or cause a lot of mayhem, all because we took the time to make them respect us. There were so many moments in the book that I just didn’t understand, parts that made me shake my head wondering how the author could publish them. If you’ve seen the movie, you would have seen the part where Marley gets out the window of the car on the freeway — what kind of people would even let their dog get close to that point? Our windows are opened a crack for the dog, not even big enough to get their head out — enough room for them to get air, but not enough to hurt them. There’s another instant that happens towards the end of Marley’s life that I just couldn’t understand. I’ll just say this — if the time comes and one of my dogs is sick, I am NOT leaving its side. Anyway, I felt like the book fell short. It had some cute and heartwarming moments throughout, but if you hope to read something similar to the movie, then you’re not going to get it. Yes, the book is sad, and yes, Marley can be quite a handful, but if you’re looking for a can’t-put-it-down dog book, there are better books out there.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Marley And Me Meets Shade The Wonder Dog Six years ago today our life changed. Shade was our pride and joy and crazy energetic black lab dog. And at 16 and a half years old she went to Doggie Heaven. Our loss was insurmountable with only one story being a helping guide through our process of grief and remembrance. Marley And Me tells the journey of one incredible golden lab and the impact he has on a families existence. This vibrant tale connected so well with us on multiple levels. We lived this. Shade graced us with her joy in June of 1989. She exploded all over the house with an energy and verve that made the place shudder. Rules were to be mocked by this puppy and the laws of physics defied. My wife and I were still in high school back then, and whenever I accompanied her home after school we were always greeted by Shade and the ever present saliva filled tongue. Her forceful personality coupled with a slathering of dog spit told us more then any words of how loved we were. John Grogan, the teller of Marley's mischief, was a newlywed newspaper writer who procured a puppy (or did Marley procure them?) and quickly learned who really was in charge. Chaos and destruction followed, along with many attempts to reign in his dogginess. As the Grogan family expanded with the birth of their three children, Marley continued on his merry way and infiltrated their hearts. And cause much property damage. As Shade grew up and became a responsible adult (yeah right), we passed through high school and college and into civilian life. After several years, we moved forward with our lives and started planning our wedding. From the beginning, the inclusion of Shade in the ceremony was mandatory. On a beautiful June day, set in our idyllic backyard, our family and friends witnessed our wedding. And Shade walked me down the aisle, letting out a big yawn right at the start. Even with all her buddies and belly rubbers in attendance, she just acted like it was a normal day on planet Earth. After all everyone was really here to see her. Age started to take its inevitable toll on Marley and causes much distress to the Grogan family. Repeated trips to the vet become more and more required. John and Jenny Grogan have to prepare themselves and the children for the hard next step. A horrible nosebleed afflicted Shade a month after our wedding, derailing our honeymoon plans. After a slow, prolonged recovery, she was never quite the same. The mischievous spark was ever in her character, but the body was growing tired and weary of the escapades. The coda of Marley's journey occurred just before New Year's and left the family devastated. John Grogan turned to his column in the Philadelphia Inquirer to pay tribute to the "world's worst dog." After publication on Tues Jan 6, 2004, a flood of responses poured in, giving him impetus to write Marley and Me. It became a bestseller and is viewed by many as the On Death And Dying for pet owners. The beginning of Shade's next adventure also happened around New Year's and brought much sorrow to us. With her body slowly growing weaker, we took her to the vet one last time on Frid, Jan 13, 2006. Seeking solace with each other, we then discovered Marley, and slowly eased ourselves through our grief. Massive success lead to more massive success for Marley and Me. A movie version captured the essence and facts of the story and is a worthwhile companion to the book. Various spinoffs rolled out, including a YA novel (Marley, A Dog Like No Other), and a picture book series (Marley and the Kittens). We cleaned out Shade's belongings days later and started a mini collection of books that reminded us of her craziness. We connected with Remembering Farley by Lynn Johnston. Farley was the main dog in the For Better Or For Worse newspaper comic strip who passed away as well. The wonderful poems "Beau" by Jimmy Stewart and "The Rainbow Bridge" were also very enlightening. For young children, the picture book Dog Heaven by Cynthia Rylant became very touching to us. Grogan exemplified Marley's crazy and loving life with his book. Telling tales of knocking over patio tables at cafes or destroying the garage walls during thunderstorms. We felt like Marley and Shade were comrades in arms. One time in the middle of the night she decided that the really loud laughing squeaky toy just had to be played with. Right now. Or the time she snuck into the kitchen and licked my mashed potatoes, just laying on the plate. She gave me a very innocent look when caught. No jury would have convicted. The tales are many and quite legendary. Shade made an undeniable impact on our lives, still felt even today. So today we celebrate the life and excitement and joy that was Shade. Thanks to the catharsis of Marley And Me, our healing has been more complete. We can smile not cry now. Shade and her slobbering saliva kisses would approve. Scoopriches

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Marlet & Me An amazing, laugh out loud story, that will have dog lovers and pet owners alike zipping through.Having recently lost my dog this story reminded me about all the good things that I had forgotten about my own dog. While the story itself is a bit sad by the end, it carries a happy tone throughout the rest of the book. Well worth the read.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I loved it!!! This is the true story of a newlywed couple who brings home a cute energetic yellow lab puppy. Marley turns out to be a dog who just cannot behave, but he is just so endearing and loyal and devoted and loveable, that his family couldn't help but fall in love with him. The book tells the story of Marley's life. I loved it!!! It was so funny. I laughed out loud lots of times, and at one point, I laughed so hard I cried - and I couldn't stop laughing and crying! The book does bring us right to the end of Marley's life, too, so it is definitely a tear-jerker at the end.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from It will make you laugh and cry I really enjoyed this book; I enjoyed learning about the characters and their funny anecdotes about things that Marley would do. I thought it was neat how they came up with his name, just out of the blue. It makes you realize how a pet becomes a part of the family.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Heart-Warming Experience As a dog owner/lover. I was able to relate to a lot of things that went on in this book. This book had me laughing out loud, crying and shaking my head in amazement. This book was a very enjoyable read for me because as I read on, I was remembering memories of my childhood dog, which was a yellow lab, and moments I experience everyday with my 3 dogs that I have now. John Grogan did an incredible job writing this book, the detail he used made it very colorful to read. You will need the Kleenex when reading this book. The Book touches very close to the heart. A Great read for any pet lover.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Ball of Energy Marley and Me is a really heartwarming story. It is a great story for people who love dogs because they can relate to the situation more and feel what the owner is feeling. I have a dog and I was able to connect better with the story line. It is full of crazy adventures, hard decisions, loveable times, and moments of sadness. Marley is quite the dog that causes a lot of ruckus but always creates a laugh. When difficult matters occur and the characters recall memories, he always jumps back in there. He brings the serious tone of the story to more of a humourous tone. Marley came about when John and Jenny, his newly married owners wanted to take the challenge of taking care of a pet before having a baby. There lives became revolved around taking care of this dog, who was full of energy. He sure is handful for them and causes many disasters too, but they never stop loving him. He is constantly distracted and chewing up things. There is so many adventures of Marley that are up lifting and exciting and the family does have its hard times, but Marley is there at every moment. When Jenny becomes pregnant they are become so excited that when they find out it is a miscarriage they are brokenhearted, especially Jenny. Marley is there comforted her. When they finally did have children, Marley was there helping. The family becomes attached to him and begin to love him no matter what. In the end Marley shows us that love is unconditional and live your life to the fullest because you never what is going to happen. Marley and Me is a special story that can bring tears to your eyes. It has good life lessons that you need to take to heart. The book becomes more exceptional in my eyes because the story is based on the author’s own dog. It really makes me think of my dog, Taffy. When I got my dog and she was a puppy she was into everything. She chewed up anything she could grab, tore up toilet paper, and would never stop jumping up on people. She was our new little ball of energy. Reading Marley and Me it reminded me of my dog and brought back memories. This novel really makes me think and puts a different perspective on life.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely fabulous!! I saw the movie and still wanted to read the book and am happy to say that they were equally as excellent. I am an animal lover, especially dogs (I have 2 of them) and am dealing with the illness of one. There are no bad dogs out there, just ones full of lessons! It was so touching to be able to know, that there are others out there who see that some family members, don't only have two legs. Thank you John Grogan.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from About a dog's life... What is it about a dog's life that we all find so interesting? I think that it is the fact that we can all relate to other peoples' pets as our own. John Grogan wrote his story about his family - Jenny, Patrick, Conor & Colleen - and their dog - Marley. Could Marley be the worst behaved dog ever? Have you ever heard of a dog that actually gets expelled for doggie obedience school? Well... have you met Marley! A well written novel and enjoyable for those who have a heart for pets. I think I was hoping for a little more substance to this book and I certainly did not get it. However, it did a fabulous job of reminding me of all the fun times that I had with my dog - Dixie - when growing up as a child.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Dogs are really man's best friend.... even if they eat the furniture! Marley and Me was hilarious! I'm not a dog-lover, but I loved this book. The crazy things that a dog will do will make you appreciate that you don't have a dog that will drive you crazy. However, the book is based on a family and they life struggles and successes they go through together. The book is more touching than the movie. This book was very emotional: I cried, laughed, gasped and shook my head at the things a dog will do to gain attention.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful book I bought this book more out of curiousity than anything else... my thoughts were 'how good can a book be that is about a dog'. Having finished the book I can now say that it was one of the best books I have read. It had me laughing and crying and I felt very much a part of Grogan's family. While there were episodes with Marley that left me thinking that if it was my dog - he would be finding a new home but at the same time having a little chuckle at the visual image I had. A friend reminded me of what I have put up with my own dog and while pale in comparison to Marley I have had destroyed carpets - the large vet bills - etc. This will be a book that I retain for my library but it is also a book that will be shared. You can't go wrong with purchasing this book - it is worth every cent.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Grab The Tissue. I am reviewing the Movie. This movie was amazing. It's not your typical Dog movie, where the dog joins a perfect family and everything is peachy kean. This movie is so realistic, it shows the ups and downs of a real family, and how the relationship between the family and the dog evolves through out the whole movie. It's not all about the dog its does focus on the family's problems as well, which made me like the movie so much. It wasn't about A perfect family and their super dog. I warn you though grab the tissue, This movie will even have the men crying, It was very touching. I hope you enjoy this movie as much as i did

Rated 2 out of 5 by from It was alright The book was alright, the ending was probably the best part. I probably would've liked this book a lot better if Grogan wasn't trying to be so humorous. I found the sarcasm and attempts to be funny really annoying, especially in the beginning.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This Will Bring Tears To Your Eyes This is the story of the life journey humans and animals share together with its ups and downs, its laughter, tears, joys and heartbreaks, a journey worth taking. In this memoir John and Jenny (John’s wife) relate their life with Marley “The Worlds Worst Dog”. After bringing home an adorable, hyper active fur ball of a puppy that demanded one’s utmost attention from the start, life in the Grogan family took a dramatic change. Marley grew into a ninety-seven-pound Labrador retriever barrelling and crashing through screen doors, gouging through drywall, drooling on guest, stealing and eating everything in sight, you name it, Marley did it. Obedience school, not for Marley, he managed to get expelled; even tranquilizers prescribed for him did not help. Yet Marley’s heart was huge, he was joyful, loyal, a model of devotion, he gave his family unconditional love in return they will learn that love comes in many forms and at a price. This book is funny, serious, entertaining and definitely one that will bring tears to your eyes. It is a very quick read, one I was totally touched by and literally laughed and cried reading it. The author has an excellent writing style, a master at using funny phrases and twits of words, a style that brings out emotions and helps comprehend the special bond that is developed between us and our pets. Marley’s crazy antics make you wonder why on earth they ever kept him, an emotion every pet owner has contemplated at one time or another…….John Grogan makes everyday mundane details of life seem interesting. I highly recommend reading this heart warming experience.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful! I definitely recommend this title to any animal lover. Grogan's descriptions of Marley and the various situations he gets into had me laughing out loud several times. I cried until my eyes were red and puffy at the ending - so much so that my cat jumped up onto the back of my reading chair, put one paw on my cheek and licked my face, as if to say "Don't be sad - look at how cute I am". With so many great reviews I don't think I can add much more that hasn't been said. If you are considering this book just read it!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A Sweet Story... Marley and Me is the story of a badly behaved yet tremendously loveable Labrador Retriever and the couple who adopts him. While it proclaims to tell the tale of the world’s worst dog, it is truly the story of this couple as they grow together into a family. Full of wisdom reminiscent of Tuesdays with Morrie, Grogan shares with readers what he learned from this hugely loyal friend. While the story had its slow moments, what prevented me from racing to the end was the fact that I wanted to prolong the inevitable. I did not want the family to have to say goodbye to Marley. Rather I wanted to remain wrapped in their optimism that he would live forever, and he will now that Grogan has introduced Marley to the world. I do not believe that you need to be a dog-lover to appreciate this book, but I suspect it would help.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I adored this book. My favorite!!!!! I'm a big dog lover, and this book caught my attention. My mother had gotten it for me for christmas, and I devoured it in one day. The book is a great book, and will truley sit on my bookshelf for years to come. The world's worst dog made the world's biggest impact on his two owner's John, and Jenny, and their three children. I laughed, I cried, and I laughed until I cried. Truley amazing how animals can make that much of a statement in one's life. I found myself looking from the book, and looking at my own labs, admiring how loving and funny they are, just like Marley. This is an all time favorite, and anyone who is a dog lover will adore this, aswell. And even some that aren't!!!!!!!!! Loved it. Great book.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Half-Decent 'Marley & Me' is a good book, it's more.. toned-down than I thought it would be. I thought it was going to be some sort of epic tale about a deranged dog who attacked people on a regular basis. To my dismay, that's not what this was. It's a story of an adopted dog, Marley, and his paranoia towards loud noises, which led to partial destruction of their house. Despite this, the dog was his owners' best friend. It was a cute novel, and humorous, however I did, in no way, find it at all sad. I suppose this would be much more enjoyed by a true dog-lover, as opposed to someone who merely enjoys petting them whenever possible.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Charming, Funny and Heartwarming I'm so glad my dog is not like Marley. But, anyone who has ever had a pet knows how much you fall in love and how much it breaks your heart when they are gone. This book made me laugh out loud (how he eats the necklace) and crying (at the bond they form and at the end). I have since given to my Mum to read and she is enjoying although she says she may never get another dog, Marley really shows how well behaved our family dog, Belle, is. I loved this book from the charmingly silly puppy to the funny young dog, to the old dog that slowed down but was still his odd self. This book makes me realize that no matter how goofy our dogs may be, you can't help but love them.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved It I thought this book was really well written and I really enjoyed reading it. I think anyone who owns a pet would understand how someone could love "the world's worst dog" and how pets really do form a part of your family. This book had me laughing and crying and I would definately recommend it to anyone, but especially those who love pets as much as I do!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Could not put it down! I finished this in a few hours - it was fantastic! It is, of course, a story about a man and his dog, but also so much more. It's about the creation of a family - the way they grow together and challenge each other. I cried and I laughed so hard I cried some more. If you are a dog-lover you must read this book!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from You've Got To Read This Book This is a heart warming story of a man and his dog. The ups and downs of living with a disobedient dog. Through many exsaperating trials the owners come to really love this big goofy dog. If you are a pet owner or just have a heart you will love this book. I laughed out loud, and also cried a LOT! You will fall in love with Marley.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Best Book for People Who Love Animals Last Christmas I discovered the greatest "dog story" ever...or at least in my opinion. "Marley and Me" by John Grogan is utterly charming. Marley is a gigantic yellow lab, and if you've ever had a lab (I've had two) you will know that they are characters: fun-loving large dogs with lots of energy, personality, and occassional clumsiness (at least in Marley's past experiences and my dogs too...our lab Max walked into a wall one day while chasing his tail!). John Grogan and his wife decided to get Marley as a type of test run to see if they would eventually be good parents...little did they know they would be getting a lot more than they bargained for. This story of "Life and Love with the World's Worst Dog" will have you laughing lots, smiling, and will possibly even make your own dog seem angelic...or maybe not. This book is a great gift for any person who loves animals or has owned a "bad dog". Even my dog, who ate my wallet wasn't Marley's caliber of "bad dog". "Marley and Me" is a well written ode to the powerful love people have towards their pets; how a pet can impact and change your entire life, and has become a beloved book of many readers as well as "bad dog" owners.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from For the Love of Dogs I just finished reading Marley and Me last night with a hearty laugh and a tears streaming down my face. What an excellent book. I have been meaning to read this book since I saw the review in our newspaper but I have been a little busy with my 5 month old chocolate labrador Ruby that may have a wee bit of Marley in her. The book also brought me back to the loss of our 13 year old black lab Callie. I am labrador crazy and I love to read - Thank you John Grogan for combining the two joys for me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent title If you are an animal lover this is the book for you. I read the book in 2 1/2 days, I just could not put it down. Marley is a dog that you just fall in love with, you may recognize him as one that you may have had. You may see things that your dog has done or if your lucky you will only have heard of some of these things! You will laugh and you will cry. I highly recommend this book.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from absolutely great Heard about this book on CHOM FM 97.7 our local light rock radio station, and when i arrived in the Muskoka's my sister in law handed me this book, i began to read it on the dock, and fell in love with Marley. I have never laughed, nor cried (sobbing is more like it) while reading a book. If you are a pet owner (especially a dog) you will adore this book. Now everytime i see a lab, i think of Marley. My own dog snuck out of the yard, and when i caught up with him, i could just see his smile from ear to ear and then i laughed out loud and remembered the book!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from You'll Fall in love with Marley This is the first book I had picked up to read in years, and so glad I did! You will laugh out loud, cry, weep and smile, sometimes all at the same time. It's so well written, easy to read and just enjoy. I recommend this book to everyone I know who loves dogs. I wish there were more books like this one out there, that's all I would read, however, this is one in a million! Read it, enjoy it, and you'll fall in love with Marley too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It will make you laugh and cry... Intially I was at first hesitant to read a book about a dog. However for once in my life I actually read a few reviews and decided to check the book out - and boy am I glad I did. John Grogan knows how to take the life of a dog and make it so real and life like that it appears you met Marley yourself. Grogan gives an honest and frank tale about life with a pet, a life which any pet owner can confess to. He tells of the inevitable fate that our small furry loved ones will soon face. Near the end of the book you will feel sad or at most cry (like me) when it is Marley's time to leave this world. Marley and Me is a very funny and ethusiastic look at the life of Marley and the Grogan family and how a small hairy creature can change your world by just being in it, and being a friend for life.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent!! I was reluctant to buy this book as I thought a story about a dog probably wouldn't enthrall me much. I was so wrong. It kept me captivated from beginning to end with superb writing. I would recommend this book to anyone who has ever owned a dog or anyone who is thinking about it. John Grogan showed how much a life can be affected and enhanced by a dog's company. A excellent read. On my top ten list..

Rated 5 out of 5 by from You'll fall in love with Marley This has to be one of the best books I have read - ever. It makes you laugh so hard you will actually stop breathing - however tears are a part of this book too. The author has a style of writing that will draw in any reader. I have read it 3 times already and will likely go through it again a couple times. Being the owner of a Bermese Mountain dog and 2 Rottweilers - I related to many of Marley's crazy escapades and the owners' way of looking at things. A must read for anyone with the challenge of raising a puppy and anyone else who is looking for a great book that is different from the usual books found on the shelf. I would love to read more from this author - maybe he will entertain us once again with another family dog.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Much Needed For a person like me with a fourteen-year old lab who's not going to last much longer, it makes the grief over the waiting to lose her seem less. It kind of is a review of her life, any lab's life, and it makes me think that no matter how much I am going to miss her, I'll never stop remembering!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A tale of true love! I started this book and didn't stop until it was done - FABULOUS! I laughed, I was amazed at the antics of Marley, and I loved him even though I never knew or met him. And most of all I cried, I mean I really cried in a weeping sort of way. I cried because of Marley, and I cried because I knew the feelings that the family were dealing with having lost a pet myself. John Grogan did such a great job of writing about his best friend in a way that Marley became my best friend too!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Super book! I just loved this book. A great story that confirmed the antics of my own little dog and that of my brother's and their way of thinking can be universal.. Rated 5 out of 5 by from "A book I won't soon forget" I wasn't sure what to expect when I bought this book, but I have to say it is one of the best books I have read in a long time. I put it in my top ten list of "all time" favourites. I could not put this book down, read it in less than 1 day. I kept reading wondering what trouble Marley would get into next, and when I finally got to the ending, I was so sad this wonderful story had ended. John Grogan tells the story of Marley and his family wonderfully. Not many books can make me laugh out loud one minute and cry the next. As the story unfolded, I think I grew to love Marley as much as the Grogan family. I would highly recommend this book to young and old, dog lovers or not. A very heart warming story. A book I will not soon forget.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Dog Lovers Must Read! I very much enjoyed reading Marley & Me. It's a very funny & touching story that I am glad John Grogan decided to share. I was a bit hesitant about picking it up because I get extremely emotional when it comes to animals. I cried so hard while watching King Kong it was embarassing and I refused to talk about the movie afterwards! But all of the reviews were so positive i decided to give it a try and i'm glad i did. marley had a very long and fullfilling life. i laughed more than anything while reading. my only problem with the book is that the author, quite a few times, makes comments about dogs not being at par with humans. (i.e. "it's not that i equated a dog's life with a human's...") i realize that everyone has their own opinions but I just feel that a dog is just as special as any person (a lot of times more so) and the comments bothered me a little. but other than that extremely miniscule complaint, this story is a must read for any animal lover!

Grogan is a wonderful storyteller and I was completely mesmerized by his recount of Marley's antics and his family's story. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent! I could not put this book down! I laughed so much and cried so hard my husband had to read it too as soon as I was done! Rated 4 out of 5 by from Rollover and read it Marley & Me was truly a lovely book to share and enjoy with the author. Of course, it was a memoir of a young family and one of its troublesome members, but, also, a poignant and moving love affair with a beautiful (if often messy & smelly) soul. As a fairly recent dog owner, I could identify with the joy and frustrations of the early puppy days and the special bond that inevitably evolves. Well worth your time.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Puppy Love I just finished reading Marley & Me and what a beautiful, funny, poignant story. Although I have never owned a dog, I do have two cats. I experienced a very similar situation as the Grogan’s and as I read the last few chapters I could not stop crying. It hit really close to home. As I read on, my 11 month old kitten (I still like to refer to him as a kitten), Fionn, came over and sat on my lap (I adopted him six months after my 12 year old cat passed away). He knew I needed a little TLC and it worked. Animals are amazing creatures. Marley & Me is a must read.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Marley and Me - It's almost the same as me and my Oh my god, I never thought there was another dog out that is remotely like my dog Jake. He has some of the quircks that Marley has in this book. It is also interesting to see how some people handle their dogs. I would highly recommend this book to anyone or let my friends borrow it. I really enjoyed this book. Take a look at it and might be surprised and read it right their in the middle of the store. I sure did.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from For Dog Lovers Everywhere! Being a proud owner of a 110lbs Lab myself, I found this story wonderfully emotional and true to the simplistic nature of dogs. I finished this book in two days and I laughed out loud and wept silently with my own "lap dog". It is a heart warming and endearing story that doesn't require any analytical thinking and should be taken as that - a story. A true must read for all dog owners who have felt that their own dog is the worst-behaved!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I laughed, I cried, I laughed some more! This book was so different from the books I usually read. It was a refreshing change and it didn't disappoint me. I have a dog named Marley as well, although she is a Golden Retriever, not a Lab. Fortunately, my Marley is not as much of a handful as John Grogan's dog, but I could relate to many of the stories he told as Marley became a fixture in their family. The story was told in a gentle, humorous and touching way -- the story of loyalty and love between a man and his dog. Although the ending was difficult, in some ways, it helped me to see the beauty of a dog's life well-lived at a time when my dog is entering her senior years.. A wonderful piece of writing for dog lovers, or those who just love a good story!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Marley and Me- MUST read for all animal lovers!!!! I just finished reading this book and absolutely loved it. I have never written a review for any book before, but felt this one was highly deserving of one. I have my own dog at home named Lucky, and he always seems to be getting into something...especially toilet paper! Reading this book made me think I was reading about my own dog (who looks just like Marley), and ironically at the end "Lucky" is mentioned :). this book is MUST read for all animal lovers, especially anyone who has, or has had a dog. Beware, it might bring tears to your eyes (as it did mine), but it has a lot of laughs!! It helps you to feel that you are not alone, in the world of "troublesome" pets! The book was wonderfully written, funny, touching and I couldn't put it down. I have recommended this book to many friends who are all dog owners, and they have all loved it. It is a great book, a great story, about a GREAT DOG. I LOVED IT!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Laugh out loud funny My stomach was aching after I read Marley and Me, I was laughing so hard. Rated 5 out of 5 by from I laughed, I cried...it made me want another dog! What a wonderful book about a dog! So artfully written that you could almost picture Marley in action in any of his misdeeds! Much like his family, I was completely unready for Marley's life to end, and actually found tears coming to my eyes remembering my own Madison, the first dog-baby of our family. When she left we downsized from 3 dogs to 2, and vowed never to do that again. Reading this book almost found me on the way to the shelter again! I would recommend it to anyone who loves dogs for who and what they are!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from 'Inconsequential' The one word that kept creeping into my mind as I tried to make my way through all 300ish pages of this book was 'inconsequential'. Honestly, I found myself forcing the reading of this book. Not to say that I am not a dog lover (I am) or that I haven't enjoyed other books about man's-best-friend (I have) but it simply seemed to me that this story lacked any real character development - except Marley's. Sure the puppy parts were fun, and the old dog parts very touching (yes, I even cried) it was simply the 13 years in between which fell short. During this 13-year period, Grogan advances in life from newly wed to father of three with an established career. The problem was that these 'life-altering' events (such as having children) were brushed over. His wife is mentioned only marginally. I would have preferred a bit more of the human angle. I feel that if you are forewarned that this book really is just about Marley the dog (all 300 pages) and you are willing to put in the time and energy into a lighthearted, inconsequential 'tail' such as this then you may just enjoy the simplicity of the story of a dog called Marley.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A story of a wonderful relationship between dog an I work at an animal shelter and I have met many, many dogs who have stolen my heart. Many of them have been hard-to-handle dogs like Marley, the labrador retriever in John Grogan's book. The ones I have met have mostly been abandoned and brought to the shelter, or surrendered by their owners who did not have the time, energy, or patience to train them. I was so touched by the fact that John Grogan and family fell in love with this destructive, boisterous dog, and stuck it out with him through thick and thin. I laughed at Marley's antics, and I also cried my eyes out. This is a book you will not soon forget.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Another Puppy PLEASE!! Before I listened to this book on tape, my husband did. He laughed hysterically, but I have never seen him sob to the point that he had to get up and leave the room!! Naturally...I made fun of him. :-) However, he had the last laugh when at two in the morning I was a blubbering mess with my 85 pound Golden Lab Retriever playing lap dog. Without saying a word my husband got of bed, sat on the couch beside us and cried again. This book describes perfectly how much an animal can change your world and how happy your heart is to be loved by one. Marley reminds every dog owner out there what the incredible journey of being a pet owner is all about. Wonderfully written and beautifully read by the Author, John Grogan. One word of caution - be prepared to want to go out and get another puppy!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Dog LOVERS best read I was so in love with this book, I spent two weekends straight reading, I couldn't put the book down. Rated 3 out of 5 by from Marley I just finished this book a couple of weeks ago and I have mixed reviews about it. In general the book is pretty good and I fell in love with Marley. Truly loved him!! I cried my butt off in the last few chapters. Does Mr. Grogan know how to portray his dog to readers? Most definitely. Does Mr. Grogan waste too many chapters talking about his wife's pregnancy and child birth? Definitely. There are a few things in the book that got under my skin a bit and certain choices of doing things would not have been my choice, but then again, he wasn't my dog. All & all, Marley was adored by his family and that's the main thing. I was glad that the family did not give up on him but was saddened that the family chose to go on vacation knowing that Marley wasn't well. Again, just something I personally wouldn't have done. I had a hard time rating this book on my book sites that I frequent because parts of the book deserved a 4/5 star rating and other parts only deserved a 2/5 so I rounded it up to a 3, but really I'd like to give it a 3.5. Simply because regardless of all the wasted chapters, I still think Marley was an amazing pet and how could you not fall in love with him? Why did I fall in love with him? John Grogan's ability to tell Marley's story.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I can relate! I have been eyeing this book for a while now and I am so glad I've picked it up! This book has made me giggle at Marley's antics and also made me sniffle as I can relate to Marley's loyalty to his owner. My Chihuahua/terrier dog has treated my daughter as if she was her own...sleeping under the crib as my daughter slept...barking for me as soon as my daughter started to cry...my daughter has also learned to "share" her food with our dog. Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Tail For Everyone This captivating novel has nearly universal appeal. I passed it on to my boyfriend to read once I was finished and he took to it like a lab to water. I have woken up to find him sitting in bed, clutching the book, eyes full of tears. After drifting off again I am jolted back awake by the sound of his laughter not three minutes later. Now, he has convinced himself that he wants a lab puppy and stops to pet every dog he sees. I reccomend this book to anyone who has a dog, wants a dog, loves dogs or has a soft spot for four legged friends. The story will warm your heart and give you a new appreciaton for life in all its forms.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I laughed, I cried, I smiled, I remembered my dog A must read for any dog owner/lover. Marley is lovable, but he is also clumsy, awkward, afraid of thunderstorms, an obedience school failure and all round 'klutz'. I first cried on page 49 and continued smiling and crying throughout the book. What a tribute to 'mans best friend' and a wonderful reminder to us all to cherish our 'furry friends' for the short time they spend with us. After I finished the book I went immediately back into it and reread certain parts (the scenes at the beach are priceless) and smiled at the similarities that Marley shared with Coltrane, the black 13 year old Chinese Shar Pei dog that we sadly had to 'put down' 2 years ago. LIke Marley, Coly instinctively knew when I needed to bury my face into his furry body and like John Grogan, I will never forget the joy that he gave me and my family.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from "Heartwarming" This book is the heartwarming tale of an ordinary family and the dog that shared their lives for thirteen years. I have never laughed and cried so much within the same book--sometimes within the same chapter! Anyone who has ever owned a dog will relate to this book. John Grogan manages to convey a "slice-of-life" story of a dog who was deeply loved by his owners and who returned that love many times over. This is a book that I would read again and again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from fantastic book for all animal lovers! Once I started reading "Marley & Me", I really couldn't put it down till I was done with it. I laughed, cried and hugged my own pets after finishing it. "Marley" reminded me of my own naughty but oh so lovable 'furry babies'. Anyone who views their pets as an important part of their family will love this book.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Need to get a Dog again!! I loved this book! Most dogs have at least 1 bad trait but i giggled constantly thinking about these poor people and everything they had to clean and repair smiling and knowing it is worth it. I cried when they went through the bad times (mind you I also teared up when I saw the photos on the back inside cover of Marley when he was old)and laughed again at the joy this dog had and then there were the memories that came back to me about dogs that have been apart of my life.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A must read for Labrador owners! I fell in love with Marley from beginning! Being a Labrador owner myself, I related to more Marley "situations" than I care to admit! I laughed...I cried....and at times I laughed so hard, I cried laughing. This book should come with a warning sticker "CAUTION: may cause uncontrollable laughter when least expected. Please choose reading location carefully."

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than expected! I passsed by this book a couple of times, I thought that a story of a dumb dog and all his mishaps was too obviously an easy sell. I thought that anyone who's ever had a dog could write about the horror and homourous stories often involved. (Chewed furniture, messes on the carpet etc.) I have dog of my own and often wonder at the messes she manages to make. When I finally did purchase this book, I read it in one sitting. This is a often very funny and yet very poignant book. I saw myself in each character many times and various of my pets, past and present, cats and dogs, in Marley's actions and sentiments. Yes, sentiments from an animal. Any animal fan will love this book, we all love our pets despite the many times they drive us absolutely crazy! Much like the rest of our family, humans included!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderfully heartwarming! I recently took this book with me to read on a long car trip and I ended up with motion sickness because I just could not put it down. It made me laugh and cry. I have since recommended it to everyone...especially dog-lovers. I have a beautiful lab myself, and although she doesn't quite get into as many scrapes as Marley, you can definately relate.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A Wonderful Read This book was very heart warming and sincerely honest. There were so many times that I could relate to exactly what Mr. Grogan was going through and could thoroughly understand his desire to keep the unbridled exuberance and passion these animals withhold. I could hardly wait until I had the chance to pick the book up again and continue reading to find out what else was in store. It barely took me a week to read within my busy schedule and I enjoyed every minute. I encourage anyone to read this book as an eye opener to life in general but being a pet owner or for that matter a Yellow Lab owner does have its advantages.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A must read for Dog lovers! I really enjoyed this book. I am the ultimate dog lover and laughed so hard during parts of this book that I woke my husband - But - I cried my heart out at the end. I think you have to be a dog lover (or at least a bit of an animal lover) to enjoy this book but for everyone who does fall into this category, get it, you will not be disappointed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So funny you'll cry! It does not matter if you have a big yellow lab, a small lap dog or no dog of your own. You will read this story and laugh, sometimes so hard you'll have trouble catching your breath. John writes so well you can see everything Marley and the family are experiencing on every page. I would recommend it to everyone and when I get my copy back will pass it on to some one else to enjoy! A must read for the summer. Sit outside and laugh out loud while your own dog(s) entertain you as well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I LOVED this book! I thoroughly enjoyed this book, cover to cover. I laughed out load so many times. But then, there were times when I had so many tears, I had to put it down. If you have ever had a dog that was truly a part of your family, you will totally relate to this book. I read it a couple of months ago, which was just a few weeks after I lost one of my dogs. It was very cathartic, and caused much reflection. This book is not "just" about Marley, but about how his family changed over the course of his life. It made me consider the changes in my family during the life of my dog... If you are a true dog lover, you will love this book. My favorite line (and this will in no way ruin the book) is when John tells Marley that he is a good dog... I am looking forward to rereading this book and also to seeing the movie.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Don't read this book anywhere you can't laugh out I absolutly adored Marley & Me. I first started reading it while I was studying for my final exams (I am in University) and I would bring the book with me to the library. I would reward myself everytime I finished studying a chapter by reading a chapter of Marley & Me. The book had me shaking with laughter, and I would have tears streaming down my face from laughing so hard. Unfortunatly I couldn't make any noise (i was in a library after all) so I had to use all of my strength not to laugh out loud. I can tell you it was hard! This book is a great read for anyone who has had a crazy pet...or any pet at all. I would recommend this book to anyone...it's a must have!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from BEST BOOK EVER Having two black labs of my own I sure can relate. I laughed and I cryed. Everyday my husband would ask me what Marley is doing today. I share this book with all my family and friends. I recommend when you tell people to read this book that they are aware that they will Laugh and Cry. My best friend called and told me to never give her a book that made her cry. She loved Marley as much as I did. WONDERFUL READ

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I Give This Book Five Barks and Two Paws Up! I have to say that this is one of the greatest books I've ever read; and I couldn't put it down! From page one I was drawn into life with Marley and fell in love with him. There were laugh out loud parts in this book, quite a few I have to say. There were times that it went straight to your heart and thought awwww. And there were quite a few tears at the end. I highly suggest this book, it's very much worth the read. Two paws up!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved this Book! and Marley! I finished Marley and Me last night and cried while the hockey game was on. What a wonderful, entertaining and true book this is! I have a golden lab and some of Marley's fears, rants and antics make me believe Marley and my lab are related! I took the book to the hairdresser and while I was waiting for the hair dye to take, I laughed so hard I cried and the hairdressers came running. I now have to share the book with them! John Grogan is very funny himself and I appreciated the way he could tell the story without any fuss or muss. Any animal lover will be a lover of this book!

JOHN TOLD THIS INCREDIBLE JOURNEY AS IF I HAD CAST IT ON THE PAPER MYSELF. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great -Should be mandatory for all future ¤t Read this in one sitting - This story helped me understand dog behaviour a bit better, and made me shed a few tears near the end. Beautifully written - it feels like you could be part of that family. I can think of many people whom I'd like to give this book - that's why I am getting another copy. A must read for anyone who has ever owned a dog, should be required reading for potential dog owners as well, and anyone who works with dogs. If you've ever had a dog that wasn't perfect, you'll really empathize with the author.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awwwh, Marley... I bought it as a gift for my hubby to read on the plane ride during his business trip (actually... our dog wanted me to buy it for him)... and I read it in a day before he left! I just couldn't put it down (and couldn't even think of him taking it while I was only half done!). Reading this made me laugh out loud and shed a tear or two. It also made me feel good that my dog isn't the only one that has 'issues'. Fun, easy to read book... get it!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great - even for non-dog lovers! I am not a dog lover, but even I could not put down this book. What a sensitive story about patience, love, and true friendship. It is one of those books that makes you ask "why would someone put up with this?" with only one simple answer - Love. If we all applied the same patience, tolerance, and love with the rest of our humanly contacts and relationships as this book describes between the owner and his dog, we would definitely live in a much better world!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I laughed, I cried! WOW! What a great read. I was engrossed from the first to the last page and couldn't put it down. I, too, am a Labrador retreiver owner and this book could have been written about the love of my life, Rocky. If you're a dog owner, especially a Lab owner, this is a MUST read, whether you're thinking of getting a Lab or already have one. Well-written, heartfelt, funny, sad, it touches every emotion a dog owner can have, and more! HIGHLY recommended. LOVED IT!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very good The autor talks about the life of his dog and his place in the family when major events happens. It's a feel-good reading, and like a lot of rewiers said, if you have a dog, you will certainly reconize some behavior in it. I am still traumatized with the 'a million little pieces' scandal, so I had just a little bit of hard time to naïvely beleive everything as descibed, and since the author is a columnist I wonder if he writed about his dog in the newspaper and receive stories, comments and temoignage, and the embryo of the book came there, but anyway it is for sure a great read and would not hesitate to reccomend it to any one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This crazy lovely Marley! Anyone sensitive about pets will love this book. You enter the life of a family through a labrador. There is one thing special about him, he's a little bit crazy! This makes the whole story funny. It will not be fair to call this as a dog story only. The book is nicely written and it's a story about a family with a dog. I loved Marley so much that, I found myself crying in the end, which is very unusual for me with books. A lovely book. Can be a great gift for anybody.
