Reviews

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Love Most authors have their own creative spin on their own tale and I definitely enjoyed A Beautiful Dark. The novel starts out slow. The mystery behind Asher and Devian is unique in the way that they don?t reveal everything at once. That to me was frustrating because I like to know everything at once. Skye is an orphan teenager living with her mom?s best friend. On the eve of her 17th birthday, her best friends throw her a surprise birthday party. There she meets a handsome yet cocky boy named Asher. She finds him arguing with another boy, fair haired and handsome as well. The next day she realizes they?re new at her high school also cousins who dislike each other and are both in several of her classes. I really enjoyed having Skye interact with both Asher and Devian. If you could find a novel where the main character falls in love with two guys at the same time then this is a great example. Each boy makes her feel different and loved at the same time. I felt they both cared about her deeply and that?s saying a lot in a novel. This ending was a definite cliffhanger. I want to know what happens next!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Really enjoyed it - can't wait to read the next one! A Beautiful Dark is a paranormal tale of good versus evil. Skye is a 17 year-old teenager who was orphaned at the age of six. Both of her parents were only children, and she has no siblings. With no family to care for her, Skye was adopted by her mother’s best friend, “Aunt” Jo. As Skye nears her 18th birthday, she notices that strange things are beginning to happen: Her gray eyes change to silver at times, she apparently short-circuited the thermostat in her house by touching it, and the only heater pumping out heat on the school bus was the one located next to her while the rest of the bus was freezing cold. All of these events coincide with the appearance of two new boys to the school, Asher and Devin. The cousins do not get along, and they are vying for Skye’s attention. Asher is the dangerous one, who is gorgeous and knows it. Devin is more of a cool cucumber and has a peaceful calm about him. Skye learns that everything about her life and the world as she knows it is a lie. The decision that she is faced with will affect not only her life but everyone around her. How will she choose, and will she make the right decision? I really enjoyed A Beautiful Dark, and I think it is a great start to what I hope will be an amazing series! Skye is a great character, and it is hard not to feel sympathetic towards her for everything that she is having to deal with. She has had a hard life, and she has managed to stay out of trouble. She is a good kid, and her love for Aunt Jo and her friends is warm and genuine. Davies is a new-to-me author, and I really enjoy her literary style. The story moves along at a good pace, and I love that her characters are not whiny brats! This one ended on a bit of a cliff-hanger, so I am really looking forward to reading the next book in the series, A Fractured Light, which was released last year.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from The Light And Dark Never Looked So Good A Beautiful Dark is about a girl named Skye whose parents passed away in a car accident when she was six years old and since she has been trying to live her life with her guardian Aunt Joe and that has been working so far, until the day she turns seventeen and two very mysterious boys show up. A Beautiful Dark was a great book, the plot and story grabbed my attention from the moment I opened the book right till the last page, I thought the concept of a Light and Dark angel coming together to show Skye her powers was very interesting and the differences between all the characters were fantastic. Skye herself was a great character, she was easy to connect to and see everything that she was going through and understand and sympathize with her,her best friends Cassie and Dan were really great and brought a nice mix of personality's to the pot even though Ian got on my nerves a little he was still a character that fit in the book. Now I have to talk about Asher and Devin, I was very surprised by both of these characters, I was expecting your average love triangle between Skye and these two boys but I'm pleased to say things went in a different way, sure there is still the love triangle but it was done in the right way and I look forward to see what happens in the sequel. I really liked how different Asher and Devin were, they were both likeable, sweet and intense when it came to Skye but the development and back-story were two different worlds ( pun intended ) This book was filled with twists and turns and characters and plot lines I wasn't expecting, any angel lover and romance junky would highly enjoy this book and will be anticipating the sequels release. Overall I really loved the book, it had everything I look for in a good story and I look forward to reading the next in the series.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from http://frosybookreviews.blogspot.com/2011/08/book-review-beautiful-dark-by-jocelyn.html This book is about Angels which I had no idea it would be about. Before I started reading it I hadn't read or heard anything about it and the synopsis doesn't give away much so I had no idea what there was there for me. But I'm glad I read it. I loved it! And the main reason was Skye. Skye was so enjoyable and loved her to pieces. She knows what she wants and even though she gets distracted and confused she manages to get back in track. The writing was a breeze and well written. Jocelyn Davies captured me with her fast paced writting and couldn't just stop after a couple of chapters. I had to keep reading and I ended up reading until 3 AM which haven't happened for a long time. I'm lucky it's summer. :) The romane came in pretty quickly but not that quickly. Does that make sense? Probably not lol. At first I couldn't see a connection with either of them but after a while I warmed up towards Asher. What can I say? I like my men dark and mysterious ;). Of course there is a love triangle in this book -I'm team Asher by the way- and I'm a sucker for those! I have read many books with love triangles and never get bored with them. I just love the tension and drama! There wasn't much drama as I would have liked and it became clear to me which one of the guys I was rooting for. The plot was really interesting on how Angels actually affect people, manipulate them even and finding out that they are not all shiny and pure as they look like. There aren't a lot of romantic moments in this book and I wish there were but it didn't bother me much since there is another book coming after A Beautiful Dark. Overall, I loved this book. It's the first book about Angels that I loved and I recommend reading this if you like Angels and love love-triangles.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Review of A Beautiful Dark by Jocelyn Davies I had high hopes for this book. The whole angel thing wasn't something I had read a lot of and I was kind of looking forward to taking a break from faeries, vampires, werewolves and dystopians (although I do adore those dystopians). Everything started out wonderfully. I was immediately drawn in by the quick pacing and dropped hints of silver eyes and mysterious guys. (Hey that rhymes!) The introduction of Asher had me swooning in my seat (or was that just the swaying of the subway train?) and Devin heightened the intrigue to a whole new level. By the time Asher and Devin end up in a fist fight in the middle of Skye's 17th birthday party, and the cafe's boiler blows causing everyone to have to evacuate, I was already on the edge of my seat. But that was pretty much where the excitement ended. At least for me. I'm not a big fan of the whole romance thing as it is, especially when the story is mostly based around that. I am really tired of the whole love triangle issue (more of a love square in this book). It's usually pretty clear who they are going to end up with and you are usually left hoping they change their minds...but they rarely do. The one thing I did like about this story is that it does keep you guessing a little more than most. Even after finishing the whole book I'm still left unsure as to which one is the better pick. I quickly got tired of the back and forth between Asher and Devin, I'm better, no I'm better, she's mine, no she's mine, my side should win, no my side should win, garbage. It was literally exhausting. OK...we get it... I find another common theme in YA books lately is for these kids to conveniently have no parents (or any adult authority) around them often, if at all. Skye's parents are dead, and she lives with her aunt, who conveniently is a tour guide and takes groups up into the mountains all the time and is almost never at home. It's not just this book, it's almost all of them lately, and it's just starting to bother me. I find it too convenient that authors keep doing things to these parents and guardians that makes them "disappear". Maybe if they were around more these kids wouldn't do such crazy things. /sigh I know I know...that's the point right? It's all just too convenient for me, and lazy writing...find a better way to work things in. There were also some weird flow issues here and there, things that I hope will get cleaned up between the ARC and final polished publication stage. The one thing that stuck out is after an accident where Asher is telling Skye to stay awake because she hit her head and might have a concussion, however after she starts asking some questions that make him feel uncomfortable he tells her to get some sleep. Huh? I liked that the chapters were short. I find it's easier to stay engaged in a story when the chapters are shorter. Also, being a transit reader, it's easier to break in between sections when moving from one vehicle to another, and then to work or home. I absolutely hated the ending. I had no idea whatsoever that this was to be part of a series, (or a trilogy as I have now come to discover). I was really really hoping for that nice and neat standalone novel. Well I was disappointed again. Goodreads usually prepares me for these types of things, but it let me down this time! It STILL doesn't show it as part of a trilogy. I had to Google it after turning the last digital page, once I had finished screaming of course...But even if I had of known that there were going to be more books, the ending still would have sucked. I'm sorry...these cliffhangers are getting tiresome...I understand you have to keep us hanging a little on some things...but to just end us all at the cliff is ridiculous...and again...lazy. I might still read the second one...just to find out what happens with Asher and Devin...but I'm really in no hurry and it wouldn't kill me to never find out...

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not losing hope. Review first published at http://unautrehistoire.blogspot.com/ Let me start by saying that I am not a fan of angel books. They have frequently let me down. So when I found out that A Beautiful Dark was about angels I was less then enthused. However I had already committed myself to reading it and I thought I would give it a try. I am pleased and relieved to announce that I really enjoyed this story. There have been few angel stories that I have liked, and I discuss this in depth here. So Jocelyn Davies, congratulations. This one was a win! Many are saying that A Beautiful Dark is been there done that kind of book. Perhaps this is true to some extent. But no one has done it like Jocelyn Davies has. There is a teenage girl, Skye, who is enamored by the two new mysterious boys in town- Asher and Devin. Davies has taken the typical love triangle story and given it a spin that is well worth the read. Two boys-angels- vying for the attention of one girl. But why? What I liked the most about this story was the suspense/mystery of the whole thing. I could kind of guess what was going on, but I was never for sure about the whole thing. Sometimes in paranormal YA, the mystery is revealed to soon, and then the story goes down hill. A Beautiful Dark had a perfect pace for me. on the other hand, I sometimes felt like things were a bit rushed in terms of description. I would sometimes wish for a little more explanation. specifically in areas where Skye and Asher would be having a conversation, they would often go by so quickly, and I would have no idea what Skye was feeling during this time, or have any sense of their surroundings. Davies is a great writer and this was her first novel, so I feel as she grows as a writer this will improve. The characters were definitely my favourite. I loved Asher, he was funny and cocky, but he also wasn't a BSer. I appreciated that. In turn, I wasn't a huge fan of Devin, he was far to docile for me. I enjoyed reading Skye's interactions with Asher, they were the most fun. Skye as a protagonist was pretty cool, she's not hugely memorable. But she wasn't incredibly annoying either. What I really liked about Skye was that she wasn't a push over. She didn't let Asher or Devin order/push her around. She had a mind of her own. She knew what was important to her, and nothing was going to change that. Overall, this was a pretty good read. If you're like me and have been disappointed with angel books lately, give this one a try, because it's unlike those out there.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Entertaining and Unique Young Adult Read Asher's wild and uncontrollable Devin's kind and cautious What do they have in common? Skye Jocelyn Davies undoubtedly pulled me in immediately with her mention of cupcakes and lattes in the opening chapter. Truly, what else could be more perfect for a birthday party? A Beautiful Dark's premise sounded mysterious all on it's own and I couldn't wait to start it and discover what was really behind the mentioned mysterious events. The novel, unfortunately, began quite slowly however the pace quickened drastically after just a few chapters with the interesting introduction of Asher and Devin, two brothers who were both as enigmatic as they were different. Unfortunately I found myself having a very difficult time relating with many of the characters. Skye, the protagonist, came off as what I often tend to call an "in between" character. She was neither weak or strong, smart or daft, she was right in the middle and I found that very disheartening. Asher and Devin, however, appealed to me far more and captured my interest. Not only did their immense differences and rivalry distinguish them from the rest of the characters but I also found myself overwhelmingly interested in their history. Speaking of which - I loved Jocelyn's addition of mystery to the novel! As mentioned above, Asher and Devin play a very large part in the mystery aspect of the novel, but what captivated me the most was it's involvement with Skye, who earlier came across as quite average and uninteresting only to be thrown into a world she never knew existed before their meeting. Love triangle - A Beautiful Dark has one. The novel featured quite an interesting rivalry between both Asher and Devin, one that I very much disliked and unfortunately fell into the romance portion quite a bit. I would have been far more satisfied had a romance ensued between Skye and Ian, who came across as quite mature and stable. In fact, speaking of the brothers, I found Asher to be very creepy, especially after his "I've watched you sleep at night more than once" confession. Asher, Edward Cullen much? Despite the lacklustre characters and romance, I enjoyed the idea behind the novel, which really surprised me. The origin story itself was worth the wait and peeked my interest the most. I also enjoyed Jocelyn's writing, though very simple it flowed excellently. After reading the ending I only assume, or rather hope, that there will be another installment to follow. I found A Beautiful Dark to be an entertaining and unique Young Adult read with a gorgeous cover and equally wonderful plot line that had me wondering.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Start to the Trilogy! When I began reading A Beautiful Dark, the first novel in a new trilogy, I had no idea what to really expect... but I quickly found myself immersed in the storyline. I was completely intrigued by the strange events that seemed to be occurring around Skye ever since celebrating her seventeenth birthday! The pacing of the novel wasn't too rushed, but Jocelyn Davies did a wonderful job adding in the suspense and mystery at just the right moments to always maintain my interest. Skye is very much a normal teenage girl. She strives to do well in school and loves the rush that skiing always brings to her as she practically flies down the gorgeous Colorado mountains. But when she meets mischievous Asher and calm rule-follower Devin, two polar opposite cousins who've just moved to town... Skye feels like she's losing her way. These two handsome boys seem to know everything about her and everywhere she turns, they seem to follow. I found myself eagerly flipping though the pages, hoping to learn some answers about why these two were so interested in Skye! I really liked the supporting characters in A Beautiful Dark too. Skye and her best friends, Dan and Cassie, had a fun group dynamic which left me smiling at their jokes and light banter. And poor Ian! He was another kind friend but Skye couldn't return reciprocate his feelings of something more, especially not with Asher and Devin in the picture. While Skye definitely found herself torn with her attraction for both of them, there was always an underlying distrust for the two because of their secrets. It may have built up the tension, but it kept the romance surprisingly more chaste than I might have assumed. It wasn't exactly like Skye was always flinging herself at either of them, which I'm glad! The ending was just plain evil though! Right when we're in the midst of the action and reaching the climax, it suddenly ends... and you're left gasping out loud and completely shocked. It was a major cliffhanger ending that took me completely by surprise! For a few moments after I finished the novel, I literally just stared at the blank pages afterwards, thinking words would magically appear... but that didn't happen, sadly. If you enjoy reading paranormal novels with angelic twists, then I think you'll really enjoy reading A Beautiful Dark for sure! Just prepare yourself for the ending because it will leave you reeling and wishing for book two right away! Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful WOW. OMG. Am still in shock with this book! I couldn't stop reading it. Skye is a great protagonist in this novel, and was developed beautifully. All of the other main characters like Asher (YUM, HOT) and Devin were all interesting characters. A Beautiful Dark had just had a great plot, I was soo excited to read this book!!! As you can see am still in shock with the entire novel. This book will be one of those books that will keep you in suspense at some parts, and in curiosity to know more of the background. There was romance which I like, and could read a lot of, but Davies does it beautifully with a get to know you relationship with Skye, Asher and Devin. It had tons of action, romance and stories that will let you create a world that Davies has created for her readers. Angels are the main topic in the novel, but Davies does incorporate them well. The whole "origin story" really drew me in and made the reader want to know more about what is going on with Skye at this time with the Angel myth that was provided. I am still torn after reading, from Asher and Devin. I couldn't pick one either if I was Skye. Asher is the funny one and likes a good time, but as the same time he is very protective, and takes care of the people he "likes". Compared to Devin who is the serious one, and has to follow rules. They are both HOT looking boys, and it then creates a love triangle which forms between them. They are what the story brings together. The more you get to know them the harder it is to let them go. This is one book I recommend people to read when it comes out on Sept. 27, 2011 because its the perfect book to read on a rainy day. I know I will be picking this up for my shelf when it comes out! I hope that there is a sequel to this, because it cannot end like that, I want to know MORE!! I overall loved it!! A Beautiful Dark will leave you with a romance forbidden, drama, and even battles amongst the two groups.
