A Dog's Purpose is rated 4.75 out of 5 by 12.

This is the remarkable story of one endearing dog’s search for his purpose over the course of several lives. More than just another charming dog story, A Dog’s Purpose touches on the universal quest for an answer to life''s most basic question: Why are we here?

Surprised to find himself reborn as a rambunctious golden-haired puppy after a tragically short life as a stray mutt, Bailey’s search for his new life’s meaning leads him into the loving arms of 8-year-old Ethan. During their countless adventures Bailey joyously discovers how to be a good dog.

But this life as a beloved family pet is not the end of Bailey’s journey. Reborn as a puppy yet again, Bailey wonders—will he ever find his purpose?

Heartwarming, insightful, and often laugh-out-loud funny, A Dog''s Purpose is not only the emotional and hilarious story of a dog''s many lives, but also a dog''s-eye commentary on human relationships and the unbreakable bonds between man and man''s best friend. This moving and beautifully crafted story teaches us that love never dies, that our true friends are always with us, and that every creature on earth is born with a purpose.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from good read In the beginning chapters I was not sure if I wanted to read more as they made me sad. Really glad I continued. It is a good and interesting read. Great for dog lovers but non dog lovers should read it also as the author gets it right about dogs and people can learn from this.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Dog's Purpose Loved this book - could not put it down - read it in one sitting. Then, purchased the sequel immediately. Have recommended to fellow dog rescuers, friends and family and neighbors who I meet on dog walks. A great read, makes you love dogs even more - if that's possible :) Have already lent the book out and there's a line up.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great portrayal of a dog's life I had this read after only a few short sittings. I laughed and cried throughout the book. What a lovely portrayal of a dog who is reincarnated as a new dog. It is a beautiful read from a dogs perspective of the world they encounter. Great for dog lovers

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Dog's Purpose A very good story about a dog who reincarnates as a dog every time he dies. While it sounds like a sad story it is very well done and has both happy and sad moments. I really enjoyed this book and plan to pass it on to many of my friends.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from LOVED IT Toby/Fella/Bailey/Ellie/Buddy narrates this guide for humans. Bailey explains that dogs are born multiple times, and carry the memory of the important things from one lifetime to another. Bailey allows us to share his lives ranging from feral puppy, to beloved pet, to search and rescue dog and beyond. Bailey wants us to understand that every dog is looking for the purpose in his life … his reason for being. Granted, lately we seem to have been asked to accept many books “written” by dogs; fiction, non-fiction, memoirs and how-to’s. But if you have ever looked into the eyes of a dog and you just know he is wondering why you “don’t get it” then you have to believe in Bailey. This book had laugh-out-loud moments, reach for the tissue box moments and downright aaaawwwww moments. I loved them all … and ahem … I’m a cat person.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic! This is a must-read for all dog lovers! It is by far the best book I have read in a very long time. A story of the bond between a dog and his "person", Bruce Cameron captures the unconditional love that a dog provides.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredibly amazing, yet incredibly sad! Although A Dog's Purpose made me cry many times, I would still read it over again! This is a funny (most of the time) story about one dog who, after living one life, is reincarnated into the next. Its goal is to find its purpose in the world of humans. It's easy to fall in love with the dog, and I highly recommend this book to anyone.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Calling all dog people! If you have a dog, you must read this book. Told from the dog's point of view, it is the story of the many lives one dogs has while searching for his purpose. (Please, don't let any religious beliefs against reincarnation deter you). It's fun to piece together what a dogs sees and thinks is happening with what us humans are actually doing. There are many moments that will make you smile and laugh and a select few that will have tears welling up (and if you are anything at all like me, spilling over and falling down your face, which is not a bad thing). As a true dog lover, I choose to believe that all dogs have some great purpose. I know mine does. And finding out what this particular dog's purpose is was a joy. Highly recommended. .

Read from the Book

A DOG''S PURPOSE (CHAPTER 1) One day it occurred to me that the warm, squeaky, smelly things squirming around next to me were my brothers and sister. I was very disappointed. Though my vision had resolved itself only to the point where I could distinguish fuzzy forms in the light, I knew that the large and beautiful shape with the long wonderful tongue was my mother. I had figured out that when the chill air struck my skin it meant she had gone somewhere, but when the warmth returned it would be time to feed. Often finding a place to suckle meant pushing aside what I now knew was the snout of a sibling seeking to crowd me out of my share, which was really irritating. I couldn''t see that my brothers and sister had any purpose whatsoever. When my mother licked my stomach to stimulate the flow of fluids from under my tail, I blinked up at her, silently beseeching her to please get rid of the other puppies for me. I wanted her all to myself. Gradually, the other dogs came into focus, and I grudgingly accepted their presence in the nest. My nose soon told me I had one sister and two brothers. Sister was only slightly less interested in wresting with me than my brothers, one of whom I thought of as Fast, because he somehow always moved more quickly than I could. The other one I mentally called Hungry, because he whimpered whenever Mother was gone and would suckle her with an odd desperation, as if it were never enough. Hungry slept more than my siblings and I did, so we often jump
