American Gods is rated 4.1739 out of 5 by 23.

The storm was coming….Shadow spent three years in prison, keeping his head down, doing his time. All he wanted was to get back to the loving arms of his wife and to stay out of trouble for the rest of his life. But days before his scheduled release, he learns that his wife has been killed in an accident, and his world becomes a colder place.

On the plane ride home to the funeral, Shadow meets a grizzled man who calls himself Mr. Wednesday. A self-styled grifter and rogue, Wednesday offers Shadow a job. And Shadow, a man with nothing to lose accepts.

But working for the enigmatic Wednesday is not without its price, and Shadow soon learns that his role in Wednesday's schemes will be far more dangerous than he ever could have imagined. Entangled in a world of secrets, he embarks on a wild road trip and encounters, among others, the murderous Czernobog, the impish Mr. Nancy, and the beautiful Easter -- all of whom seem to know more about Shadow than he himself does.

Shadow will learn that the past does not die, that everyone, including his late wife, had secrets, and that the stakes are higher than anyone could have imagined.

All around them a storm of epic proportions threatens to break. Soon Shadow and Wednesday will be swept up into a conflict as old as humanity itself. For beneath the placid surface of everyday life a war is being fought -- and the prize is the very soul of America.

As unsettling as it is exhilarating, American Gods is a dark and kaleidoscopic journey deep into myth and across an America at once eerily familiar and utterly alien. Magnificently told, this work of literary magic will haunt the reader far beyond the final page.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from What a ride! You can read my review of this book at http://writingofanovel.blogspot.com/2012/02/american-gods-by-neil-gaiman-book.html In short, this book is awesome. Don't read too many reviews of it that might take away from the magic of discovering the story at its intended pace.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from excellent read this book was awesome...well researched. He had everything about the gods and their history down. It took me a couple times to understand everything the book was saying, to appreciate the small twists and turns in the book. but its well worth it. Excellent book on the whole

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Leader of the pack After reading two of Neil Gaiman's books (American Gods and Neverwhere), this author had already managed to lodge himself at the forefront of my mind as my absolute favorite author. I comment on this one only because it was the first I read. As a disclaimer, I will say that you must be tolerant in order to enjoy this book - there is language and some rather vivid racy descriptions in parts - so it is not for younger readers. However, the detail and background which Gaiman infused in everything (from his settings to his characters) is astounding. The plot twists are original and unexpected, and yet somehow Gaiman manages to stay true to the mythology he bases a large part of this story upon. An astounding piece of literature, the likes of which no other can compare to. Next to Shadow, other stories' well-developed characters appear almost flat, and I would recommend it to anyone thirsting for something new. I'm a fantasy/fiction/science-fiction addict and in the 250+ purchases I've made from various Chapters outlets, Gaiman's work tops the list as the most worthwhile.
