Rated 5 out of 5 by from Curling Explained I bought this book as a gift for an Aunt who is approaching her 90th birthday and had me worried these past 2014 Sochi Olympics. She is a lady of great faith and she informed the family that she had prayed to God for two things and that if her prayer was answered she would not pester God again for the rest of the Olympics. The two things she prayed for was that the Canadian women would win the gold in both curling and hockey. I chastised my aunt by reminding her that our Canadian men were still playing and hoping to win gold in hockey - "What about them?" I had time to skim through the book before passing it on to my aunt and I was most impressed by the down-to-earth approach taken by Ms Jones in explaining the game. This is not "Curling for Dummies" but an explanation of the game that respects the intelligence of the reader and his/her desire to enjoy the game more fully either as a spectator or a player. I haven't checked with my aunt yet, but I believe she will enjoy Ms Jones explanation of and insights into the game as much as I did. As many have said in the past - "If you want advice, ask a professional." This professional does not hold back in explaining the fundamentals of the game. Well worth the time if you want to understand the game of curling.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Jones Keeps It Simple There are not many books about which you can say that it would have been better if it were longer. But this is one. However, what Colleen Jones does attempt to do she does well. She applies the Keep It Simple Strategy that she uses on the ice to writing books as well. You can probably read this book in an hour. But don’t. It’s meant to be digested more slowly. The strength of Colleen Jones Curling Secrets is that it encourages the reader to be sharp by the time he or she steps on the ice. Get in shape. Practise both as a team and as individual. Be sharp mentally. Hold team meetings. In all these areas, Jones tells you how to do it. In particular, she emphasizes the importance of developing a good slide. Her basic advice: Stop being a lazy curler and be successful. Jones also quotes tips that she has received from other curlers or has read in classic curling books. This is a novel feature for a genre where authors sometimes write as though they had invented the game themselves. Another refreshing thing about Jones is that she allows her publisher to use photos where she looks hideous. She has so much ego or self-confidence that she doesn’t have to look picture perfect in every photo. If you’re only going to buy and read one curling book, this is not the one. For that, I would recommend Warren Hansen’s Curling: The History, The Players, The Game. But Jones has provided an excellent supplement to more all-encompassing texts. It’s well worth your time to delve into this little book.
