Reviews

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I LOVED IT! Wow! What an incredible debut novel written by a fellow Canadian! Honestly I wasn’t into werewolve themed novels but this one just became my favourite. Maybe the beginning was terribly slow, but I was already interested in the characters and the plot so I had no problem plowing through. The mystery within this novel kept me reading on way into the night. Mac and her friendship with both Kyle and Jason were just sweet and sure they were all friends even when Amy wasn’t around. Still I couldn’t help but feel weird when there were so many signals that Kyle and Jason fell for Mac, and she was too clueless until it blew up in her face. I guess there’s a trend with love triangles in young adult books and I can understand why. It makes for a great dramatic read. I feel like I’m reading a soap opera. Was anyone else aware that Mac was always in trouble and the guys had to swoop in to save her? Damsel in distresses in books make me laugh. She was so utterly stubborn and got herself into such dangerous situations for making such rash decisions. I love the witty dialogue between the teens. So much mystery, romance, and action that I can’t help but pick up a final copy of this book. Can’t wait for the next one!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from love this take on Werewolves!!! This has got to be the best Werewolf Story I have read this year. From beginning to end the plotline of this book kept me hooked. The characters of this book are well developed, unique and adding to the story in some way. Mackenzie (though everyone calls her Mac) is the main heroine of this story. She's been living with her cousin Tess for a while now, and it’s been 6 months after the death of her best friend Amy. She’s brave, willing to risk her life for her friends. Her willingness to sacrifice herself even extends to her quest to learning about what happen to her friend Amy. It’s interesting to see how Mac reacts to the male characters of the story. She has been friends with them for such a long time but suddenly one starts to show her his true feelings, while the other hides his feelings till the ending of the book. Jason is someone I wouldn’t really like. He's a drinker and prone to getting into fights. I can see why he hates werewolves so much, but I think he goes too far he goes along with the trackers to hunt people who they “Think” could be werewolves. He’s a good guy when he isn’t drinking and trying to get himself or other people hurt. He's a character who grows and evolves, but I'm not going to tell you just how. Kyle is a good friend to Mac, a protector to her. Even when Jason creates chaos, Kyle is there to help her. His big flaw is that he doesn't always tell the truth to Mac, although it's done in a way to protect her. He's liked Mac for a long time, but he flip-flops. He will go from wanting to be with Mac, to not wanting to be with her in a romantic way. This flip-flop goes on throughout the book, and it became annoying quickly. But, I suppose that a boy may really act like this if he wanted to protect the one he loves. This story takes place in a small town called Hemlock. An ironic name, as hemlock is known as poisonous plant, with medical uses if given properly. Recently there have been werewolf attacks in the town, and one werewolf ended up attacking and killing Mac’s friend Amy. The story centers around Mac and her friends Jason and Kyle in how they deal in different ways of the trackers coming to town. Trackers are a non governmental operation (civilian) who take it upon themselves to track down werewolves and bring them (most of the time) to government owned facilities that house people infected of the werewolf syndrome. I find this to be an interesting idea, that being a werewolf is a virus or disease that must be controlled, not just a magic spell or curse that's passed along with a bite. While not appropriate, I can see people behaving like the trackers if this happened in real life. The romance in this story is good, although I got annoyed every time Kyle would change his mind about whether or not to be with Mac. Everything in this story is center around Amy and her death and whether it really was a werewolf that killed her or was it something more then just that. Mac and Kyle gather information as they track down the real story of how Amy dies.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My New Favourite Werewolf Novel! When it comes to werewolf novels, I tend to eye them warily and take my time in bringing myself to read them. However, when I first stumbled across Hemlock, I just knew that I had to have a copy of the book... and not just so I could gaze at its absolutely gorgeous cover. Once I began reading the book, I was completely addicted to the suspenseful storyline and couldn't set it down until I was finished! Kathleen Peacock's debut Hemlock is more than just your typical werewolf novel, that's for sure. Mackenzie's life hasn't been the same since the night she learned her best friend, Amy, had been murdered by a white werewolf. Her high-profile death has attracted an organization called the Trackers, a group whose mission is to capture anyone infected with the Lupine syndrome and send them off to rehabilitation camps where they're never heard from again. Haunted by Amy's death in her dreams, Mac decides to investigate her death, hoping for a sense of closure and wishing that the Trackers would leave her town. But with the Trackers in Hemlock, it especially isn't safe for anyone to be sympathetic towards werewolves, even if they're not all dangerous as they claim. And Mac's determination to find Amy's killer has placed herself straight in the path of danger. There are actually two romantic interests in Hemlock, but it's not obvious to readers until it suddenly hits you straight in the face and you're left completely torn which boy is the right match for our Mackenzie. If the love triangle had been done another way, I might have been annoyed, but I loved how Kathleen Peacock executed it in her novel. While Mac obviously cares for both Jason and Kyle as her closest friends, she doesn't allow her feelings to overshadow her main goal of discovering who killed Amy. Both of the boys are hiding secrets of their own and make mistakes, yet even though they act completely different than each other, you just know the one thing they have in common at least is Mac's best interests in their hearts. Kathleen Peacock's Hemlock has instantly become my new favourite werewolf novel! With a perfect combination of mystery, romance and the supernatural, there's no way you won't be loving this novel. I'm absolutely looking forward to seeing what will happen to Mac, Jason and Kyle in the second novel of the planned trilogy! Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fast paced and fabulous The Good Stuff Mac is a fabulous well rounded character with an awesome name. Tons of mystery, intrigue and plot twists - I was surprised on many occasions by what happened Storyline is fast paced and never boring I'm not the biggest fan of werewolf stories, but thouroughly enjoyed this one & look forward to reading more of the series Author is a good storyteller (and a Canadian!) Another suprise for me when reading this was I didn't mind the sorta love triangle thing, it actually really worked in this story - you can understand why the boys feel like they do and why Mac might have feelings for both of them (and why oh why can't two boys fight over me -- oh yeah 41 and married, probably not a good idea) Fabulous character development and most of the characters (well except for the adults) are realistic in terms of actions, feelings and dialogue plenty of thinly veiled commentary on the evils of prejudice and government control (you can see the paralels to the Salem witch trials and the hollywood blacklist against suspected communists and even towards the treatment of aids victims and homosexuals) Enjoyed the dark humour added in at just the right time The relationship between Tess and Mac is lovely and some of their conversations are hilarious The Not So Good Stuff Majority of the adults are useless uninvolved jerks -- you know how I feel about that some repetition of plot points (for example 12 years ago when the government announced the existence..) we get it no need to keep repeating it Favorite Quotes/Passages "Yes, a werewolf had killed Amy. But I couldn't blame an entire group of people - even if that would have been easier. The only person to blame was the one who had killed her." "The intercom buzzed. "Wow," I muttered, we're more popular than a pretty girl at a Star Trek convention." "He leaned against the wall and crossed his arms. "In some ways. After enough time passes, you realize that maybe a whole day went by where you didn't think of them. Then you feel guilty because you're not supposed to forget - even if it is just for a day." "We'd watch The Birds last year, and ever since, she claimed that pigeons were just biding time before making their move. For some reason, 90 percent of Tess's fears seemed to come from movies we watched on cable." Who Should/Shouldn't Read For those who enjoy a twist of mysery and the paranormal Fans of Kelley Armstrong will enjoy 4.5 Dewey's I picked up a copy of this at the Ontario Library Association Super Conference 2012 from the HarperCollins booth

Rated 5 out of 5 by from There are secrets in Hemlock Is Mac ready to discover them? *A Copy was provided by the publisher for review* Gorgeous cover? Check! Exciting premise? Check! A title that makes you guess? Double check! Can you tell that I was absolutely excited to dive into Hemlock?! To be frank, I'd been duped by gorgeous covers in the past, however upon discovering that Hemlock was, in fact, a Canadian author debut....I knew I wouldn't be disappointed! (I've yet to be let down by a fellow Canadian.) Hemlock tells the story of Mackenzie, aka Mac, a girl living an a small town that has been victim to several werewolf attacks resulting in deaths and infections. After the recent loss of her best friend Amy, things become far more disastrous than Mac could have ever expected. When an extremist group dubbed The Trackers marches into town, Mac discovers that they'll do just about anything to find the white werewolf - the alleged killer of Amy. There are secrets in Hemlock Is Mac ready to discover them? Hemlock, unfortunately, wasn't a novel that instantly hooked me in from it's first few chapters. I found myself slowly absorbing every detail that was given to me. To be honest, at that point I was beginning to feel like Hemlock was lacking action, that overall suspenseful punch that every paranormal read needs. Luckily, before hitting the halfway mark of Hemlock, I found myself hitting intense action and suspense face first - talk about a seriously unexpected punch! With amazing characters like Mac, Jason, and Kyle, I found myself wanting to dig deeper into their stories and learn more of their secrets. Additionally, with the constant re-appearance of Amy's narrative voice, I found that it added so much more depth and emotion to Mac's point of view. I instantly felt connected to Mac and to Kathleen Peacock's wonderful secondary characters. With that said, I absolutely cannot wait for Kathleen's next installment in her Hemlock series! Love werewolves, the paranormal, romance, and suspense? Hemlock by Kathleen Peacock has all that and more and I highly recommend it to teens and adults with a hankering for awesome!
