Rated 5 out of 5 by from What a masterpiece! It is the turn of the sixteenth century, and for the young sixteen-year-old protagonist, it is the turn of a new life. Estrella deMadrigal is coming to terms with an unforgiving world of religion and beliefs; it is a world where persecution is the mainstream and Judaism is not. It is on these terms that she learns what she and her family really are: Marranos, hidden Jews, pigs; there are a million other ways to describe how Estrella is viewed in the eyes of the Christians. Through experiencing first-hand, Estrella will show you the ugly side of man and will expose the preciousness of beliefs, what one holds most dear. As you follow on the short but sweet ride of Estrella's, you will savour an enjoyable and unforgettable glimpse into the world of holocausts and inhumanity. A truly moving tale, Incantation will show you the power of love, betrayal, friendship, and family. Hoffman's latest story is quite an extraordinary masterpiece, one that you definitely won't want to miss!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing This book is sooooooooooooooooo good. The ending made me cry though. It really gives you a perspective of what life was like for non-Christians back then.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely moving This is a story about Estrella deMadrigal, in 1500 Spain. Yes, that time period, where the Jews (among any other non-Christians, but very vehemently the Jews) were assaulted, driven away, burned alive, had every bone in their body broken, had their libraries burned, their knowledge considered blasphemous, their bodies assaulted, their minds tortured... well, I could go on and on - suffice it to say, 'horrendous' doesn't cover it. Hoffman's latest teen story is thus: Estrella, who lives among a family of hidden Jews, does not know of her heritage, only that her mother is good with herbs, that her father is a well-thought-of scholar, and that her neighbor is her best friend. When the hatred begins to ramp up to a full fledged inquisition, Estrella learns her real name, her heritage, and a series of horrible truths about loss and faith. Ultimately, I'd say this book was phenomenal, and wrote - for a teen audience - an amazingly honest period piece that I imagine most people know little about (myself included), and without pulling punches. Hoffman does so, however, with her trademarked beautiful lyrical prose, her sense of emotional immediacy on every page. I loved the writing even as I hated the events, and connected with a girl in an era in the distant past (and no so distant present).

From the Author

Junior Booklover Member Emma Lee Kramer’s e-interview with Alice Hoffman author of Incantation 1. In researching this book, did you find a real Estrella or is it based on historical facts i.e. what happened in Spain during the 1500’s? A: There were thousands of Estrellas – but although the book is based on historical facts, Estrella is an imagined character living in an imagined town. What happened to her and to her family happened to many Jews during this time period in Spain as they were driven into Portugal or to the capitals of Europe; many then went on to South America and Mexico. 2.This book is quite a stretch from Aquamarine . What was is it that motivated you to change genres and go with historical fiction? A: I wanted to write about a world that mirrored our own in terms of religious intolerance and persecution as a way of trying to understand what is going on in the Middle East today. 3.In reference to question 2, did your publisher support your decision to write historical fiction? A: I have always felt the freedom to write whatever I want – I’m writing for my readers, but also for myself. In fact, my publisher has fully supported Incantation – they feel, as I do, it’s a book that raises questions about our own political and personal lives by looking backward into the past. 4.What influenced you to write Incantation? A: I’ve always been interested in Marranos, hidden Jews who had to practice their religion underground. I think the current political situation, our i
