#1 international bestselling author Linwood Barclay delivers a sequel to No Time for Goodbye--an electrifying novel of suspense in which a family''s troubled past is about to return in more ways than one. And this time, they may not be able to escape. . .
Seven years ago, Terry Archer and his family experienced a horrific ordeal that nearly cost them their lives. Today, the echoes of that night are still haunting them. Terry''s wife, Cynthia, is living separate from her husband and daughter after her own personal demons threatened to permanently ruin her relationship with them. Their daughter, Grace, is rebelling against her parents'' needless overprotection. Terry is just trying to keep his family together. And the entire town is reeling from the senseless murder of a local retired couple.
But when Grace follows her delinquent boyfriend into a strange house, the Archers must do more than stay together. They must stay alive. Because now they have all been unwillingly drawn into the shadowy depths of their idyllic hometown. There, they will be reconnected with the man who saved their lives seven years ago, but who remains a ruthless, unrepentant criminal. The Archers will learn that there are some things people value much more than money, and some people who will do anything to get it.
Caught in a labyrinth between family loyalty and ultimate betrayal, Terry must find a way to extricate his family from a lethal situation. All he knows is that survival might mean doing the unthinkable. . .

Reviews

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great summer read! I really like Linwood Barclay's writing. He seems to have an unlimited imagination and writes books that have so many twists and turns that you never know what's coming next. This book was no exception. Terry and Cynthia must once again deal with Vince in this sequel to No Time for Goodbye. This time he is not there to help them.... Very thrilling book and I recommend it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great summer binge reading! Linwood Barclay's latest novel, No Safe House, has been sitting on my kitchen table looking at me for over a week now. I resisted - knowing that I had some vacation time coming and I would binge read it until I literally couldn't keep my eyes open. I did - and it was worth it! Barclay usually writes one off suspense novels, but this latest is a follow up to 2008's No Time For Goodbye. Barclay grabs the reader from the get go with a prologue that just sets the breakneck pace for the rest of the book. You'd think that after what Terry, Cynthia and their daughter Grace went through seven years ago, life would leave them in peace. "I don't know where I got the idea that once you've come through a very dark time, after you've confronted the worst possible demons and defeated, them, that everything's going to be just fine." Uh-uh, it's not... When Grace goes along with a bad idea her sketchy date has to take a Porsche out for a joyride, it starts a domino effect that plunges the family into yet another nightmare. Barclay cuts the narrative between Terry and others with their own agenda. It did take me bit to figure out that there was more than one group - these chapters are initially quite cryptic. I do enjoy this style of storytelling, but have to hold myself back from flipping ahead 'just to see'. Barclay's plot is quite inventive - I had no idea where things were going to. The little click when things start to fit together is quite satisfying, but there are many, many pieces to Barclay's puzzle and just as many twists and turns. I did think that the one of the plot devices was a bit far fetched, but it didn't detract from my enjoyment of the book at all. The writing shoots straight from the hip - there no unnecessary descriptions or involved self explorations, just fast paced dialogue and action. Barclay does the 'regular guy thrown into a crazy situation' story extremely well. No Safe House was excellent escapist reading ...And one last thing - you might want to think twice about who has a key and the alarm code to your house - the neighbour, the dog walker, the babysitter, the cleaning lady....

Editorial Reviews

#1 National Bestseller “ No Safe House is Barclay’s most ambitious work to date, full of plot twists and turns, grim humor, rough nobility and dark redemption. . . . Wondrously done.” — Book Reporter   “This is a welcome return to the Archer family. A compulsively readable thriller. . . . Another hit for Barclay.” — Library Journal   “Barclay takes the didn''t-see-it-coming twist (of which he is master) to cosmic levels here and has the reader open-mouthed at his ingenuity throughout. His protagonists have depth and complexity and he is even prepared to tackle what is something of a rarity in the crime genre—forcing his readers to change their minds about characters safely consigned to the moral outer darkness.” — Financial Times (UK) “The follow-up to the smash hit No Time For Goodbye revisits the Archer family, who are unwittingly drawn into a web of violent crime. Brilliantly plotted, with witty dialogue that crackles in the best hard-boiled tradition, you’ll race through this fast-paced and brilliantly twisty thriller.” — Sunday Mirror (UK) “Few authors can match Barclay''s ability to conjure constantly surprising thrillers and set them against a backdrop of normal suburban life where everyday events and objects are imbued with a sense of menace. . . . Gripping and very suspenseful, this one will keep you frantically reading until the final unexpected twist.” &m
