by Liz Lundell

Warwick Publishing | September 6, 2003 | Hardcover

Old Muskoka: Century Cottages and Summer Estates is rated 3 out of 5 by 4.

An insider''s guide to a nostalgic tour.

Illustrated with scores of exceptional historic and contemporary photographs, this book describes 40 noteworthy century-old summer cottages and estates.

Muskoka has long been Ontario''s most glamorous lake district, the holiday retreat of choice for generations of successful Americans and Canadians. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, industrial moguls from Pittsburgh such as the Mellons, Clemsons, Hillmans, Millers and Donners built or bought cottages here. Their neighbors were famous politicians, scientists, and bankers.

Today, these cottages are cherished not just because of their age and architecture, but because they are rich with stories about their builders, owners, visitors, summer gatherings, excursions, and vintage boats.

Muskoka''s cottages and estates are repositories of family history, steeped in tradition and proud reminders of summers well spent.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Sorry but DO NOT BUY I normally don't write reviews but after reading the two 5 star reviews I thought I had to share my opinion since the two rave reviewers must be related to the author of the book.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Horrid...a waste of paper with so many talented writers and true historians in this country it is sinful that a publisher wasted trees and time in publishing this book

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A beautiful book I bought this book from the author when it was released. My draw was it had a story about my grandfather in it, but after reading it all I enjoyed every store about the Muskoka permanent people and the tourists. The pictures are delightful with the beautiful cottages and the style of these busy Muskoka days. If you love Muskoka then this book is a must.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic What a great deal and a must have for the coffee table at any cottage. That's where we took it and people keep picking it up and getting lost in it. Grab it while you can at this price. It's a great companion book to "Enchanted Summers" which is similar book on the Grand Hotels of Muskoka.
