The drama, beauty, terror and aftermath of Tornado Alley...One man''s journey into and through one of the most horrific and awe-inspiring storm seasons on record. Join Canada''s Tornado Hunter, Greg Johnson, on this deeply personal journey and you too will be Blown Away. In his own words and stunning color photographs, Johnson criss-crosses the 49th Parallel to bring a fresh and intimate perspective to the life of the storm chaser on both sides of the US-Canada border. Travel with Johnson through twelve American states and two Canadian provinces (Saskatchewan and Manitoba) in his quest to not only intercept but document some of the season''s most powerful storms on record, like the EF5 tornado that devastated Joplin, Missouri on May 22, 2011. Blown Away is also a look inside the world of severe weather photography. Johnson provides tantalizing detail of his equipment and shot strategies that will satisfy the amateur and professional photographer alike. Through his active social media presence with real-time blogging and chase video postings, Johnson invited amateur photographers to submit their own photos, some of which are included in the pages of Blown Away. Blown Away highlights Johnson''s artistic eye and technical precision in photographically capturing a difficult subject...Mother Nature at her most tempestuous.
About the Author
Greg Johnson, one of North America''s top professional storm-chasers and severe weather experts, is also an accomplished photographer, speaker, workshop leader and, most recently, author. Having graduated from Canada''s renowned Acadia University, and after founding and building a leading successful communications, marketing and advertising firm from the ground up, Greg decided it was time to devote himself full-time to pursuing his passion for capturing nature''s most beautiful and deadly displays of severe weather. With more than 10 years of experience, Greg enjoys chasing classic prairie thunder and lightning storms, tornadoes, hurricanes and blizzards, and he plans to continue traveling the world year-round to satisfy his appetite for capturing extreme weather. Using sophisticated weather-tracking technology, his ability to read severe weather patterns and a team of dedicated sidekicks, Greg has put more than 30,000 miles on his Tornado Truck, intercepting and documenting hundreds of storms across the United States and Canada in 2011 alone. Additionally, Greg''s skills are now being retained by the outdoor festival industry in order to assist organizers in ensuring their large crowds are kept safe from sudden and severe weather risks. Greg is also well known for his workshops in severe weather photography, his innovative shot-making and creativity in merging time-lapse photography and music to create mesmerizing weather visuals and soundscapes. As someone who has taught meteorology for many years, there is one thing I know for sure, you can''t teach passion! Greg without a doubt has a passion for severe weather, which really shows throughout his book. Amazing photography brings you inside the storm, as it accurately depicts a storm chaser''s life on the road. With 11 years of storm chasing experience myself, and being fortunate enough to chase many large and powerful tornadoes/hurricanes/nor''easters, I highly recommend this book to anyone who has a love for storm chasing.
