Reviews

Rated 5 out of 5 by from O'Malley's Best Work Third time's the charm for O'Malley and me! I absolutely adored this book! Scott Pilgrim never really won me over and Lost at Sea is terrible, but Seconds is hands down brilliant. I guess I've always kept going back to O'Malley because I love his art; it has that manga look without really going all the way. As per usual Bryan brings to the reader a tale of magical realism this time with time/space shifting and house spirits. The title sounds mysterious and right away we find out that "Seconds" is the name of the main character's restaurant but as the story progresses there are a few other ways the title can be interpreted. All the characters are quirky and lovable in their own ways. I especially found myself drawn to Hazel, a tall, model-like beautiful 21yo who is painfully shy and nervous and hasn't dated as she's not sure if she's into boys yet. While the story is mostly humorous and bizarre, there are thought-provoking moments that made me pause. Altogether a brilliant mix of plot, characters and the odd make for one of my favourite graphic reads in a while. I must add though that I am a bit miffed that Bryan's author blurb on the jacket flap fails to mention his Canadian identity, especially when the copy I own says, "Random House Canada" right underneath!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from loved it! Lots of people read comic books, but I'm a manga person. I have never read a comic book in my life, and although there might not be much difference between a comic book and japanese manga apart from the drawing style, I was just never a fan of superheroes and whatnot. When I first saw Seconds, the cover was what did it for me. It is one of the cutest covers I have ever seen, and better yet, the inside of the jacket is GORGEOUS. Everything about the book looked so pretty, even the paper felt so nice. Therefore, even if I didn't necessarily enjoyed the book, I would have still just liked to have that book up on my shelf. Good thing is, I absolutely loved the book. I devoured it, and it was such a nice break from all of the university work and stress. The main protagonist, Katie, is a talented 29 year old chef who runs a very successful restaurant. Not only does she already run one, but Katie is also working towards opening up another one! Suddenly, things with the new restaurant goes wrong, her ex-boyfriend pops up out of nowhere, she starts noticing weird things, and everything just goes down the drain. One day, a mysterious girl appears in Katie's room, and comes with simple instructions that Katie can follow in order to get a second chance. I don't really want to spoil much about this book, although all of that can be found in the synopsis, I think it would be more fun to go into this book knowing little to nothing. As the story progressed, it was very interesting to see what would happen. I also absolutely loved the characters. Katie was hilarious, and I just honestly fell in love with her personality. The whole book was just very well written (and with beautiful illustrations), and everything about it was just simply, perfect. I will definitely be checking Bryan's other comics, because I sure enjoyed Seconds very much.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Seconds, please! You know something is good when you make squealing sounds in anticipation of the next page. "Seconds" is a must-have and a must-read for anyone who appreciates a brilliantly drawn and coloured graphic novel that brings to life a story of second chances in the cutest and darkest form. It will leave you begging in your best Oliver Twist impression, "Please sir, I want some more."

Editorial Reviews

NATIONAL BESTSELLER “Funny, colourfully drawn, briskly plotted and packed with enough detailed food porn to set serious foodies salivating, Seconds is a slight afternoon read, tackling Millennial anxiety and all that (often overstated) quarter-life crisis stuff in its own light-touch way.” — The Globe and Mail   “Fans of Scott Pilgrim know that O’Malley writes and draws quirky humour like no one else.” — Ottawa Citizen   “In  Seconds …O’Malley addresses bigger, and sometimes darker, themes like regret, ambition and relationships. But he leaves room for magic in the panels, too…. Seconds  isn’t quite as jam-packed with cultural references as  Scott Pilgrim , but both books relish the details: Beautiful pages illuminate layouts of Katie’s home and workplaces. Delectable dishes are described at length. Even his characters’ wardrobe choices are spot-on.” — USA Today   “O’Malley’s created another funny, videogame-inflected world where relatable human emotions meet surreal, fantastic elements…. O’Malley’s clearly grappling with some big issues here, about personal responsibility, decision-making, and regret…. A step forward both artistically and thematically.” — The Portland Mercury   “It’s part cautionary fable, part second-coming-of-age drama, wistfully nostalgic while never shying
