Rated 5 out of 5 by from An exciting vampire romance! The Awakening by L.J. Smith is the first of the four part series, The Vampire Diaries. The novel was exciting to read because of the emotions the characters felt. The writing was easy to understand and was written for a wide variety of audiences, thus a thirteen-year-old girl would probably enjoy it as much as a nineteen-year-old would. It is written in third person, so the viewpoint changes every once in a while to Stefan’s. It’s a fairly short novel, so if you are reading slowly, then you can finish it in about six hours. The novel takes place in Fell’s Church, Virginia. The protagonist is Elena Gilbert, who is now the high school senior of Robert E. Lee High School. Her parents are both dead; Aunt Judith is taking care of her and her four-year-old sister, Margaret. Elena has a strong personality, is beautiful, the queen of her high school, who can get any boy she wants. But, Stefan, the only boy she wants is not giving her any attention. Stefan Salvatore is a vampire, who came to Fell’s Church to rejoin the world of daylight. He used to hide in Italy, but he became tired of being alone. With wavy dark hair, an average height, and beautiful features, Stefan draws a lot of attention from the females. Will Elena get Stefan? Why is Stefan avoiding Elena? There have been strange occurrences in Fell’s Church; is there a sinister presence in town that no one knows about? This novel did not include any cell phones. I am very eager to read the next book in the series, The Struggle. I recommend this vampire romance to any teenage girl; they will surely enjoy it. After reading Twilight by Stephanie Meyer, I wished that The Vampire Diaries had been written in first person, since its less confusing when many people are being spoken of, but I guess when switching viewpoints often, it would become annoying. Unlike Twilight, the protagonist was a popular girl, thus her life without Stefan was also an interesting one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A true masterpiece of flawless emotion and power. When I first came across this enigma at a local chapters, I was skepitcal due to my previous encounter with authors in this category, teen horror writers just didn't hit home with the effect that hardcore novelists did. But when I started up the first few chapters, I began to realize I was gravely mistaken about this tale of tragedy and unrelenting love in the face of unspeakable horror. Trust me, this is not a novel that will dissapoint you, from the richely imaginative plot comes something you rarely see in a horror novel nowadays, raw power in terms of emotion and feelings behind what is considered a monster to the general audiance. Smith dwelves you into a world where the creatures you considered devilish are described as tragic. From the cold, mocking, enigmatic Damon to the contemptful and sorrowed Stefan, you will grow to love these characters as the book goes on, with a mixture of rich fantasy, beatiful tagredy, mystery and hardships, this is not a series you will want to miss.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from An eye opener This book was truly revitalizing! For anyone who enjoys finding themselves, this is definately the book for you! A female finds herself, in herself without the outside world dictating to her what her role as a lady should be. Going against the patriarchy that has engulfed females in the 18th century, Edna is a most inspirational woman. Truly inspiring for anyone who is tired of conforming to a crazy world. With a little bit of love and adventure, this is definately a book that is hard to put down (and the best thing is that it's only a hundred pages, plus!!). Chopin's irony and humour is not to be ignored and makes for a great read!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I couldn't put it down It a wonderful book that I couldn't put it down. Its a romance and a mystery all in one. I had this book for a long time and didn't read it until a couple of days ago. It was excellent, I couldn't put that book down. I liked it so much that I looked around to see if I could get it in the book stores but the only place I could fine then was on chapters online. Thanks Chapters

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Slow at the start I found that the book was very slow at the start. You couldn't relate to the characters and really understand what was going on. Then I fell in love with one of the other characters and fell in love with him. This kept me reading, by half way int the novel I couldn't put it down it was so thrilling I just had know what was going to happen next. So my advice to anyone who is thinking of reading it is: The begining is tuff but stick with it because by the middle it is a real gem!
