by Mick Mars, Neil Strauss, Tommy Lee

June 27, 2002 | Trade Paperback

The Dirt: Confessions of the World's Most Notorious Rock Band is rated 4.8529 out of 5 by 34.

The most influential, enduring, and iconic metal band of the 1980's reveals everything a tell-all of epic proportions.

This unbelievable autobiography explores the rebellious lives of four of the most influential icons in American rock history.

Motley Crue was the voice of a barely pubescent Generation X, the anointed high priests of backward-masking pentagram rock, pioneers of Hollywood glam, and the creators of MTV's first "power ballad." Their sex lives claimed celebrities from Heather Locklear to Pamela Anderson to Donna D'Errico. Their scuffles involved everyone from Axl Rose to 2LiveCrew. Their hobbies have included collecting automatic weapons, cultivating long arrest records, pushing the envelope of conceivable drug abuse, and dreaming up backstage antics that would make Ozzy Osbourne blanch with modesty.

Provocatively written and brilliantly designed, this book includes over 100 photos, many never before published, for the most exciting and insightful look ever into the Crue.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Must Read! Ever since I heard Motley Crue for the first time I have been a big fan of their music. When my friend gave me this book as a gift I couldnt put it down! It covers the life of all the Crue from childhood until 2002. There are also over a dozen pages of photos that range from their album photo shoots, to live concert photos. This book is a must read for anyone who is interested in Motley Crue or any band like them. You will have an experience of your life!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than words can explain This book was incredible. Any Motley Crue fan would go nuts over this. Even if you're not a fan, its such a roller coaster of events that you'll find yourself into it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Life Of Rock I had heard alot about this book from friends and the media so a friend lent it to me to read. Like all rock and roll bands their beginnings aren't too pleaseant to read about. All the band bends battled with their demons and some even lot a loved one. Fame always has alot of hard work and the rewards sometimes are great but all the sacrifies you have to make sometimes take a toll on the family and friends. I did learn alot about the bands high life and their party life. Certainly this book is a good one to read if you enjoy hard rock bands.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Could not put it down! Motley Crue fan or not, it is well worth your time to purchase The Dirt. This book is an in depth tour of the bands rise to fame, and obstacles on the way. There are no better words to describe this novel other than sex, drugs, and rock and roll. You’ll laugh on one page, then completely shutter (with interest) at the debaucheries of their wild lifestyle. I completely felt like I was being spoken too by the band members, or right upfront in the crowd at one of their remarkable performances. You’ll get all “the dirt” on these rebels to society of their time. I’m pretty sure I got goose bumps on more than one occasion while reading. I could not put it down! It’s a lifestyle I could never imagine and you can get a feeling of an up close and personal perspective. Through laughs, and gasps, this book is guaranteed to satisfy the inner wildness in you.!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The story of the most decadent band of rock and roll. Motley Crue is the band that every guy wanted, and the band that all of the women wanted to be with. I'm not sure how these guys are all still alive, but it sure makes a good story. If you are a fan of band biographies, this is a must have for your collection.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from deliciously dirty...best book i've ever read. I wasn't even a big motley fan to begin with but I had heard such great reviews about it so I picked it up. Let me tell you that I could NOT put it down, and finished so fast that I was sad it was over. If you like reading about rock n' roll, partying, sex, drugs, alcohol, and total chaos, this is your book. You will end up becoming a fan, gaurenteed, and for those of you who are huge motley fans, well, get ready to be blown away.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from How come these guys are still alive? It's obvious from the style that the four members of the Crue were interviewed and then the material sorted into chapters. It feels as if the reader is listening to them talk, which gives the material high impact. With all the drugs, women, alcohol, death and bad business decisions, the only aspect missing is learning more about each members' musical contributions. Yes, Nikki does most of the writing, and it's easy to see how he is inspired. But what inspired each song? Mick is an amazing guitarist, but he doesn't really have much to say (unfortunately, that's not unusual). Vince, Tommy and Nikki really steal the show. I am a biased reviewer as I was really into the Crue during the 1980s and now. Overall, it's a fun read and certainly has it's emotional highs and lows. Great insight into how bunch of kids from LA, who should all be jail, made it to the top.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Entertaining Doesn't matter if you're a Crue fan or not, this story will make you laugh and shudder at all of the crap these guys pulled. Again, can't believe they're not dead or all have HIV from all of the sex and needles. Ugh! Great photos, too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Mind boggling Nikki Sixx asks on the soundtrack to the heroin diaries "how the hell am I still alive ?".... the answer is sheer luck!! The shinanigans of the four members of Motley Crue are described in this book in graphic detail at times & how any of them made it beyond the age of 30 is baffling to me. Hard drugs, alcohol abuse, car wrecks & heart faliure would have seen a regular mortal face up & six foot under, but somehow Mick, Nikki, Tommy & Vince are still pulling off world tours & releasing suberb music. I think the lesson her is don't do as I did, think a while & make the right choices. An absolutely compelling read, graphic at times & riddled with bad language, but for a rock fan a must read!!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from '*~ Party like a Rockstar ~*' I'm not a major fan of Motley Crue, but I picked up this book out of curiosity. It's fascinating! Each band member opens up their thoughts, their feelings, and their experiences in an empathetic personal way. "The Dirt" gives you a REAL definition of "Party like a Rockstar". Check it out

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not a Motley Crue Fan, but huge fan of this book. I must say I am not a Motley Crue fan, yet this is by far the best Rock -N-Roll book I have ever read. Written by the band themselves, it feels as though you are sitting there with these people as the tell you the stories of their lives. I would recommend this book to anyone, Motley fan or not.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Raunchy, could not put it down ...unbelievable that they survived, it shows what alot of money in the hands of little boys with little self control can achieve, I liked the perspective from all sides it wasn't just one members warped, substance induced version...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from AMAZING This book is simply AMAZING...well written and gives you a feeling of being right there in the midst of their craziness! A must read for everyone who likes Motley Crue or wonders what happens backstage, on the bus, or in the minds of the worlds most known rock band!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of the best books i have ever read!!! Wow This book was one of the best books. It was so intresting to read, not only because i was a die hard motley fan 15 years ago.....but it was an indepth look at the rock scene in general. It really opens your eyes to how fast the ups and downs come with fame....something i could never imagine. I would recomend this book to anyone who was around in the 80;s even if you were not a motley fan but just a rock fan in general.
Date published: 2006-08-02
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wow. The dirt is a very well written book that gives people an indepth look in the rock and roll scene. This autobiography is very raw and truthful into what happens when things sprial out of control in a rockers life. when you read this book the subject matter will blow you away because of how well described events are. Allthough Nikki Sixx has flatlined many times, he still remmbers the events like yesterday. Through Heroin and alcohol, women and girls, these men can still prove that they can rock just like when they were 19.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Cruehead 4 Life! This a must read for any Rock 'N' Roll fan! Sex, Drugs and Rock 'N' Roll reign supreme in this story of survival. From Nikki's overdose, to Mick's crippling disease, to Tommy's ever so public marriages to Heather Locklear and Pamela Anderson, to Vince's daughters untimely death and the car accident that killed his best friend Razzle. It's amazing how the 4 members of Motley Crue lived through the lies, deception and heartache that often found them at the receiving end of the inside of a bottle or at the end of a syringe. They candidly speak on everything that is Motley Crue. I've read this book several times and will more than likely read it several more times. This is a book that is VERY hard to put down.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from sweet Drugs sex and rock n' roll baby! The best book i have ever read, better than TommyLand (which i loved) and possibly better than the heroin diaries which i have yet to read. You have to read this, even if u hate the Crüe.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Read It! Unless youre super sensitive to all things that need to be said, than read The Dirt. I grew up listening to 80's music, even though I wasnt alive then. I knew quite a bit about alot of 80's bands, but after reading The Dirt, I understood what people define a rock n roll cliche. For anyone whos interested in anything about rock bands of the 80's, read The Dirt.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Rock autobiography ever read This has to be one of the best, most interesting autobiography, or book for that matter, that i have ever read. You'll find it difficult to put it down once you start reading it and it tells you so much about the crue that you'll be screaming for more. It also tells you so much of the life of rock stars in that era. I definatly recommend this book to any Motley Crue fan or any rock fan for that matter.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Review of A Teenaged Girl Being only 13, this might sound a bit differant than some other reviews. Reading The Dirt was amazing for me. I didn't know alot about the band until I read it. And reading it taught me alot about alot. From drugs to Rock and Roll. My mother told me that I couldn't do anything in the book. It was a lesson of what not to do. It was refreshing to read something that intense. i stayed up extermely late to read more and more. I never do that. It was that good. I love how they were completely honest about everything that happenned to them. I loved it

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Could not put this book down... I am a big fan of Metal and was so excited when I got this book as a present. I was full of none stop action, excitment and raw details. It really makes you think of how they are still standing today. I loved it and would recommend it to anyone....
Date published: 2005-01-03
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Still reading it I bought this book the first week it came out and still find myself reading it from time to time. That to me makes it a classic. I have to get another copy because the page bindings are getting broken. You have to buy this book if you're a Crue fan.
Date published: 2003-08-16
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Motley Crue-The Dirt I'm not much of a reader, but as soon as I found out that Motley Crue had published a book, I just knew I had to read it. Motley Crue has a reputation of Girls, Drugs, Behavioural issues and tons of sexual escapades. It was this that lured me into reading the book. I must say that I wasn't disappointed at all. This is a must read book. It is in fact one of the best books that I've ever read! It was such an awesome book that I'm hoping that they write a second part to The Dirt . If you've ever wondered what it would be like to be in one of the world's most famous rock bands, then this book is for you.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An absolute must-read! I could not put this book down. Even if you are not a fan of Motley Crue, you will be blown away by the life this band lived and almost lost. This is one amazing story!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Must Read for Crue Fans This is a must read for every true Motley fan. You get all the dirt right from the very beginning of Motley History. Neil Strauss does an great job of recording the stories and emotions of each member through exilerating and troublesome times. From girls, drugs, wives jail and kids, this book takes you through it all - kicking and screaming!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Whoever thought it was possible This is a must read for anyone who is/was a fan of the Crue back in the day they rocked or still is now. Well written and quite personal in areas, makes you wonder how they really did survive through all their mistakes and life's everyday realities.
Date published: 2001-06-03
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Finally it's out! This book is one of the only few that really lives up to the hype and title. From start to finish, you will be disgusted, appalled, mortified...and left with a feeling of amazement that these four people even survived. From the in-band fighting, divorces, drug and drink escapades, Motley Crue has endured what no other rock band has endured. Read about Nikki's anger at his father, Mick's debilitating disease which he kept secret for over 20 years, Vince's grief over his loss of his daughter to cancer, and Tommy's intimate details of his incarceration. Motley Crue has provided Crue and rock fans THE DIRT, which is basically a survival guide for rock n' roll. Lastly, you will have a sense of respect for these individuals that they are even breathing..Motley Crue is the true essence of a decadent band. Plus, THE DIRT allows you to read what other major players surrounding the band had to say. The Dirt is a honest, no holds barred look at a band that should have ceased to exist years ago. I am glad they survived. A MUST READ!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Released this Tuesday!!! Although it doesn't have the CD as promised, as that's on their new concert DVD, the excerpts that were published in Rolling Stone last month should blow any rock story out of the water. Nevermind Steven Tyler strapping urine to his legs to avoid drug test detection or the shark incident involving Led Zeppelin in Seattle. The Dirt will not wash off. A must have for Crue fans and rock experts.
Date published: 2001-05-20
Rated 5 out of 5 by from It's not out yet people.... Straight from Nikki Sixx's diary on the bands official website a few months back, "The Dirt" will not be out until April 2001. However, the book will include a song called "Nobody Knows What It's Like to Be Lonely", a song they recorded 20 years ago just before they released their "Too Fast For Love" Lp, which helped the band get signed to Elektra Records in 1982.

Editorial Reviews

“A fitting successor to both Stephen Davis’ 1985 tome Hammer of the Gods and Strauss’ 1998 collaboration with Marilyn Manson, The Long Road Out of Hell.” (Brian M. Rafferty, Entertainment Weekly)
