Reviews

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Decent read but probably exactly what you expected. I read this in about 2 days, and while i did eat it up, it was exactly what I was expecting. If you watch the show on TV, than you probably already know everything that is within these pages. Nevertheless, I felt it gave a little more insight into how everyone (Stefan, Damon, and Catherine) were feeling, and it outlines Stefan and Damon's relationship quite a bit more than the show. Recommended read. Just wish i could have read it before the others.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Surprisingly good I was really surprised with this book, though it's important to remember that this is BASED ON THE TV SHOW history and not on Stefan's original history from the first books. There are difference so don't freak out. This book was much more readable than the majority of the newer ones in the TVD series. It was very easy to relate to stefan and find yourself completley enthralled with Katherine. We get to see what Daemon started out like and the interesting characters in Mystic Falls. The only crit I have really is that Stefan's sudden change of mind on Katherine doesn't have enough detail and isn't quite as believable as his love for her. It felt rushed and because of that made it difficult to really buy into Stefan's hate filled bloodlust. We've spent the majority of this book thinking he's a nice guy in love with Katherine... when those two elements change it's really important that there's just as much sincerity in them so readers can empathize with Stefan. I actually enjoy this book more than most of the others, I am excited to read more.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Background Story The year is 1864, and a mysterious young woman (Katherine) has come to live at the Salvatore estate after her parents are killed in a house fire. Stefan finds himself entranced with her beauty, despite his arranged engagement to another woman. The town discovers that demons - vampires - are walking among them and have a plan to destroy them. Will the town be rid of the vampires? Can Stefan ever be with Katherine, or will his brother Damon get the girl? If you watch the tv series, you'll definitely want to read this novel. If you've read the original series, you'll mostlikely still like this, but keep in mind that this version is based more on the tv show, and therefore some facts will be different. If you haven't done either, I'd still recommend reading this, and you can read this one first, as it takes place in the past, so you won't be missing anything. I liked reading this novel, because it gives you some extra back stories that you aren't given in the tv show. For instance, how Pearl and Anna became vampires. Now, of course if you've seen the show you'll know how the story ends, but there's much more insight involved, which keeps it fresh. It really sheds some light on Stefan's feelings and thoughts towards Damon, Giuseppe, Katherine and vampires in general. What I really love about L.J. Smith's novels are that it's not always "Love Conquers All". It is generally a love triangle story, but it doesn't follow the typical love triangle plot.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from The Vampire Diaries: Origins by L.J. Smith -- It’s 1864, and Stefan is stuck in the middle of the civil war. But that’s not the only war that’s happening. He is to be betrothed to a woman he doesn’t love, while at the same time, the mysterious Katherine has caught his heart. Stefan isn’t the only one though, his brother Damon has made sure to spend his sunny afternoons chasing her through the garden in the huge Salvatore estate. While the towns suspicion of the ongoing animal attacks turns into something more, the brothers carry a deadly secret; Katherine is a vampire. -- Well. I don’t know about all of the other people who have read this book felt about it… but I have a few things to say. I’ve read all four of the original Vampire Diaries books, and I’ve kept up with the TV show since it began, and having all of that background sort of made me confused. When I first started to read this book, I thought that it was going to have elements from both the TV show as well as the previous novels. But that is not the case, it’s based only on the show. SO, to all of you people out there that have only read the books, don’t get confused. It’s the background of the TV show printed on pages. I repeat… KATHERINE HAD BROWN HAIR IN THIS BOOK. Besides that confusion, there was something else that bothered me quite a lot actually. In L.J. Smith’s other novels, she usually has two or three stories in one whole book. I thought it was way more effective that way, because after you read the first story in the book, you could go right into the next one and by the end everything would be tied up. This novel felt a little lacking to me… I mean by the end everything had happened, but I still felt like there was a lot missing that is needed in a good story. I don’t know. Maybe it was because Smith was writing somebody else's idea, or maybe it was another reason. I think that this should have just stayed a background story instead of becoming something all on it’s own. I haven’t seen many other people reviewing this book, so I don’t know about what other people thought about it… but yeah. Check out her site, she has TONS of other books that she needs to get writing, instead of doing something like. :P Just saying http://www.ljanesmith.net/www/home I guess I’ll give this one… a 2.5 out of 5.
