Reviews

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This book deserves more attention! I first saw this in stores and was immediately captivated by this STUNNING cover with the dual image. The blurb immediately told me it was a dystopian, and since I love the genre, I had to pick it up. This is good. It's creative. As a writer, I am constantly trying to think of things that could make a dystopian work. Zhang used two souls in one body. I would have never thought of writing something like this, and it works! I'm not sure if you could say this is supposed to represent either our conscious, imaginary friend, or something else. Regardless, this is a book to remember. I agree with the quoted critique on the back cover (I cannot remember the YA author) who said it "redefines what it means to be human". This book really makes you think about human nature, life, and morals. There are also elements of suspense and romantic tension, which makes this book even better. I really do not know why this book isn't popular. WHAT'S LEFT OF ME reminds me a LOT of Veronica Roth's DIVERGENT. By that, I mean more plot than content. Unfortunately, I can't really make a brief comparison without ruining this book. Fans of the DIVERGENT series will definitely enjoy this, which is book one of THE HYBRID CHRONICLES. I can easily see this becoming a New York Times' Bestseller. A good mention is on the author herself. Zhang is young, as anyone can very easily see through her author portrait at the back. It also reveals she's a university (my guess is undergraduate) student. I'm amazed and inspired that she is able to balance the busy academic life of university, and to be published, all while continuing to study English literature.
