Boudu, a vagabond who's grieving over the loss of his dog, attempts suicide by throwing himself into the Seine. But Monsieur Lestingois, a bookseller, rescues him and takes him into his home to try to reform him. Soon after, the household is turned upside down by the antics of this free spirit. Then the uncouth, but inexplicably attractive Boudu seduces his benefactor's wife and the maid -- who's also Lestingois's mistress. And suddenly, the bourgeois man has more than one reason to envy the man he saved from drowning.
Boudu, saved from suicide by drowning, is invited into the home of his savior, but wreaks havoc in the household, replacing his benefactor by seducing his wife and mistress. After winning the lottery and acquiring a wife, he receives bourgeois respectability, but not for long.
This film was remade in 1986 as "Down and Out in Beverly Hills."
